I just started keeping mantises because I've always been scared to keep them and with the short life span. Scared meaning that I don't want to mess up and kill them on accident. Now I know they are a species that I will be keeping them for the foreseeable future. I ended up getting 2 female and 1 male ghost mantis and 2 Indian flower male mantis. I'm hooked! Thank you for the video and if you keep it, keep it crawling bro! Thank you for all you do. I'd love to send you a custom vivarium and see what you think. Hit me up.

I've been raising Chinese mantids for several years. I release thousands in my area and keep many to raise. I make my own fruit fly cultures and buy pinhead crickets. It's a fantastic hobby and I get a couple of pets in the process. I just wish they lived longer.

Superb! - My grandmother ordered 2 oothecas from a flower catalog when I was a kid and gave me one. My grandfather laughed us to scorn and said there were 100s on the edges of his field. He was correct. :D - Every few years I'll raise a few and they are common at our place. Also raise bees, and that can get to be a stand-off. I realize this was a while ago, but really appreciate this info. Learned so much! 👍😀

just found your page :) i raise Mantids, i find 3-22 a yr breed and release the babies in the spring, then as they are a lil older L3-L4 i catch again and repeat. i have 3 now. one yr i had 22 i only had 8 in containers the rest were free range, mostly in windows, cieling corners, each had their own spot, boy was it a pain to feed them all having to climb on chairs to reach them. keep up the good work

I thought about getting a mantis for a while. Then a huge one (probably female) somehow magically appeared in my room last summer. It flew and landed on my air conditioner, I actually thought it was a bat at first! Took half an hour of using a large plastic container, a roll of Christmas wrapping paper, and a barking terrier mix to get that thing out the window. Didn't want one anymore. Now I'm interested in them again. It seems like they aren't to hard to take care of and wouldn't get out of the cup.

How often should I feed my preying mantis nymph? So far I've been putting about 6 flightless fruit flys in its container and it eats them right away. Should I continuously make sure there is a few in its container at all times. Should I feed it once a day? Can you feed it too much? What is the right amount?

My daughter and I found a wild Carolina mantis this past summer. We let it go in my flower bed, and it literally walked back over to us...twice. So we took her inside, and found it was amazingly tame. She would allow us to hand feed her, and seemed to enjoy hanging out on our sleeves, shoulder, etc. She ended up laying 3 egg sacs, a week or so in-between, before passing about a month later. From the first egg sac, 6 babies hatched 4 days ago, and another 6 came out last night. From what I've read, there could be 50-100 in each sac, and all 3 appear fertile. I'm not equipped to care for 300 baby mantids. So my question is this, do you keep your babies in those 2oz deli cups, or should I go ahead and put them in the large cups? We have about 2 more weeks before it would be safe to let them outside. Unless you'd like to have the other 2 egg sacs, in which case I'd happily send them to you.

Awesome video! We would like to meet you! You look like an interesting person! :) We found a large 4-5" praying mantis last fall and let her live on a small amber lampshade from Poland. We have many videos of her eating and playing! She lived in our home on the lamp for a couple months and had 2 ootheca s, which we put in the refrigerator. Two days ago, we took one out and made an aquarium with sticks therein. We now see that we need to put some cloth on our homemade screen that is duck-taped around the aquarium. We wonder now, if perhaps the 10 gallon aquarium is too large? My husband Stephane does art and would like to share some of his art with you if you would like, and we drive his and her-ses?

I'm raising Mediterranean Mantids from birth. A surprising number of them are dying. I think the problem may be their inability to digest food. One just ate a fly for more than an hour and its abdomen doesn't seem to show any food in it. It's like it's not fully swallowing the fly and can't finish eating it, as if it's like a human being trying to eat a hamburger with no liquid to wash it down. I'm in Las Vegas. They've survived 120 degrees and months without rain. I was told that they didn't need to drink any water because they got enough from their food, so I haven't been giving them any water. They don't seem to be molting as often as I had expected. Could lack of water explain their difficulty molting and swallowing?

I posted a couple times on your diff vids I also sent you a msg on your FB. I found a nymph on my tire yesterday and brought him in. He (she?) is in a plastic tupperwear with a mesh lid I made, secured with the tupp lid, but the inside is cut out so the mesh is exposed, Ryder lol can breathe. Ok. There's some rocks in there for him to hike around on, a stick just like yours, and i squirted a tiny bit of water into a corner, tilted the container so the water would stay. I'll be damned if Ryder - this morning - didn't get under his stick hand upside down and MOULT right then and there, like boom! His shed skin is there So I know that's what he did (you said don't bother them when they do this and I did not but he did it SO fast!) I need food for him, I don't have a PetCo etc only a WalMart, so I hope I can find something?? for him to eat? I have the 32oz wingless fruit fly culture in my cart on your site. What else do I need right now? I don't want him to die!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Question: We are keeping crickets to feed our pet mantids. I dunno what we are doing wrong but its hard to imagine anyone keeping mantids as pets when its costing an arm and leg to feed them. Was just hiking around and found an oothooka (however u spell the egg case...) ... I figure if there are a dozen or more that can hatch from this egg case then I can keep a few for breeding purposes (I suppose I will need to catch a few more for ideal genetic diversity health purposes...) and then release the rest into my garden. I suppose I may be giving them an advantage by protecting them through their first instars ??? At what instar should I release them to give them the most advantage? Anyway how did u say I can order flys from u to feed them?

I live in New York so I assume its one of those two. I was just wondering what temperature I should keep my eggs at and how long will these suckers take to hatch?? Lol winter is coming up and I wouldn't want them to hatch in the middle of it...also when they hatch, should I separate them immediately or let them grow for a while? I need help I don't want them to die so hopefully you could help. Thanks!

if you place them in a paper bag and put them in your fridge they will overwinter and delay their development until spring if you like, 6 month shelf life. room temp will work. You cant stop them from hatching!

  • @nicolettevanderwarren3132
    @nicolettevanderwarren3132 7 років тому

    Hey guys,
I am a last year University student and I am getting a B.S in Biology.
For my genetics class, we had to breed and observe fruit flies. In order to keep them from flying away, we put them in the freezer for about 1-2 minutes. This does not kill them but just knocks them out long enough for us to determine the sex of the fruit fly and allow us to transfer them to start a new culture.
The way I planned to feed my mantis fruit flies is by knocking them out for an easy transfer then placing a couple in the container. They will wake up and the mantis will be able to eat!!
CAUTION: If you leave your fruit flies in the freezer too long YOU WILL KILL THEM. Also, you need to be careful because leaving them in the freezer too long can also sterilize the flies. Also once you are done with the culture and you dont want to keep the culture, I usually let the adults go free outside but put the rest of the culture in the freezer overnight. This will make for an easy clean up and is a sure way to keep those flies from not hatching in your garbage can.
The freezer method also works for house flies and other insects. But the same terms apply.
Just a little tidbit! Who knew breeding fruit flies would come in handy some day?

I ordered a mantis egg case, unfortunately not from you, because I found you after I ordered it. But I will be ordering some stuff from ya anyways. But I have a question for you. I've seen other videos saying as soon as they hatch, release them into the gardens and outside. Is this true, or should I wait until they're bigger. I am going to release some into my gardens, we live at a greenhouse business, but I do want to keep and raise some too. Thank you

How do you maintain the humidity in the container. Do you have to take the mantid out and spray the water. How often would you do that?

You seem very knowledgeable so I would like to ask a couple questions. I have someone sending me six egg sacs to hatch for my garden. How long do they take too hatch? I want to release them straight into my garden but I hear they don’t like cold weather and my last frost is in. Early April.

Is it okay to leave a few flies in the nymph's enclosure after it's done eating, or should I remove them?

Great video. Full of knowledge you are. Lol. I have a couple of ooths. I thought they were sterile. One hatched without my knowledge and they all died. I have another ooth and I want to monitor it for hatching. I need a Fruit Fly culture in case the next hatches. How can a purchase one from you? Thanks! I look forward to your reply.

Hi I'm from Ontario Canada and I'm getting a 2L Shield Mantis next week .I'm just wondering about there temperament and handling and basic care .I have a 1 gal plastic jar I bought and put a mesh screen in the lid and the substrate is Bio .I have 1 problem and it's the food source .I can get Crickets but flightless fruit flies are next to impossible near me .Is there anything else I can get for the baby ?
