i want a soldering iron with legs so i can command it to chase people around
Weller you are not supposed to put solder on the soldering iron but on the joint itself
It's fine this way as the molten solder is in contact with the head and heats up the part in the process.
You can put a dab of solder on the tip prior to placing the iron on the joint. Some people do these when manually soldering.
I believe that putting solder on the iron whilst it is in contact with the pad increases the contact area allowing better heat transfer.
Its not the preferred method under IPC guidelines, however it is still perfectly acceptable to IPC
