Meaning he absorbed the fall by spreading out his arms and slapping the ground, just before his back hit . When I was training, we had to practice slapping out ,so we would know how to land correctly. Getting the wind knocked out of you sucks

You're arms absorb the fall ,so you aren't getting the wind knocked out of you. That is my best explanation. It takes a lot of practice, to get good at it .
