Yeah you either can't lift it or you can't. He accidentally shifted it when taking hold before the fake attempt. Thor would have figured it out, unlike what people were claiming at the time. (edit for clarification)
I immedietly knew that everyone knew that the Captain was holding back because everyone knew that the Captain respected everyone so he won't hurt Thor's dignity.
Cap could have lifted Mjolner and chose not to. He understood what was happening and knew god level power was his if he wanted, and he still chose to pretend he couldn’t. That’s cap.
According to the writer (Whedon), Cap had the capability to lift the hammer, but he believed he couldn't. So he defeated himself. Not some odd belief that he didn't want to wield a god's power or anything.
Ding ding ding. More people need to understand this. Right after he says “you’re not worthy“ cap gives this look that means something completely different after endgame.
Idk, part of me feels like it’s the fact that Cap hides the secret of knowing who killed Tony’s parents, Bucky, that prevented him from picking up the hammer.
Well, looking back to that via "Endgame" one would think Steve felt he would actually been able to lift it, but didn't want to steal Thors thunder 😉 Makes him even more worthy!
Steve was always worthy (I knew that before Endgame) If you listen to the AoU commentary with Whedon he said something along the lines of :”Steve knows that he’s worthy here, it’s just out of respect for Odinson he doesn’t want to embarrass him.”
I love how this is them telling us Cap can lift Mjolnir but chooses not to (because lets be honest you are either worthy or not worthy there's no kind of worthy)

One of the Russo brothers revealed in an interview after Endgame that Cap always could lift Mjolnir. When he realized he could, he didn’t wanna show everyone, so he pretended to not lift it in this scene. Despite the dark secret he kept from Tony and everyone.
One of two possibilities, either Cap realized he could and didn’t want to or the secret of Bucky killing Tony’s parents was preventing him from being fully worthy.
I'm pretty sure Thor knew that Cap could lift the hammer but chose not to, because anyone not worthy shouldn't even be able to "nudge" it. So in End Game it was joy he felt and yelled out "I knew it!" when Cap used Mjolnir. Which also leads to another mystery, Hela destroying Mjolnir. Maybe it was Odin's death that weakened the Hammer but if that erased any enchantment....then ANYONE should be able to wield Mjolnir. I mean an Elevator (IYKUK) can't be the only thing that's worthy (and Vision) 🙂
@@RobinB650 good catch...well that and Mjolnir reassembled for Jane, post Odin's death. Too many enchantments lol then back to only Thor being worthy since the child could only use Stormbreaker.

The way he smiled when Cap actually lifted it. Huge character development for him as previously that would have upset him greatly.

in endgame, the hammer was brought along with the stone from the other timeline, so the enchantment would still be active on it as Odin hadnt died yet

He's Worthy, Always Has Been
Cap knew he could he lift it
I remember Tony's prima nocta joke got the Tumblr crowd mad when this movie came out. Some people get offended over anything.
Now most people aren't smart enough to get it in the first place.
I had the first issue when Steve lifted Mjolnir. Absolutely amazing story, and I dearly loved that comics.
It would be a nice continuation to do now the Endgame scene with all of this people now XD
Here’s what I think. Cap just didn’t really want to lift the hammer
Cap could always lift it. he just chose not to to keep the peace
And that made him even more worthy
Talk about foreshadowing. 💪
During this moment, Steve Rogers/Captain America knew he was worthy to wield Mjolnir, but he chose not to lift it just to not embarrass Thor.
I honestly thought Tony would just life the table with Mjolnir on it
Watching this movie at the theater, I knew that before doing so, Steve Rogers would either lift Mjölnir, or budge it at the least.

Of course, by now all these reactors know Cap was just pretending he couldn't do it.
The hammer saw Steve is worthy but not that worthy to use it at that time..

It doesn't. They were using little jet thrusters on the gauntlets for extra lift.

The reason why he was able to move it a little bit because he wasn’t thinking about anything besides trying to lift it and it wasn’t the store was worried he was interested in why he was able to do it

As gratifying as it was in Endgame...the whole "lifting Mjolnir" thing is just painfully stupid.
