I bought a kit that does away with the vacuum lines, cable operated, run it inside the truck, won't kick out if the engine is off or buried in mud and water, it's better than a locker, reduced wear and breaking the right front axle.Just got it this evening.
Could I potentially drive my truck without the actuator? I'd like to take it off and try to restore it but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it back on in which case I may take it into the shop.
Yes you can drive without it but you won't have 4×4 . Also my atuater worked but it's the shift fork inside the axle worn out & replacing that $35 part costs $600 labor because you must drop entire front axle assembly too access the fork.
Hello 1A Auto. I need your help please! I have a 2000 Expedition 5.4 E.B. My 4W/AWD works when I first start it. After a while, I'll shut it off, restart it and I'm driving around in a RWD vehicle. When the AWD isn't kicking in I can still get in and out of 4x4 flawlessly. What could be my problem?

Interesting, I'll have to recheck the actuator on my truck cause I'm thinking it has the same problem as this one does. It holds vacuum but it doesn't appear it travels far enough for the shift fork to engage which is what I suspected from the start. Problem with mine is the actuator looks really sized up on the axel housing, I didn't mess with it much after hearing of guys busting off the ear on the axel housing trying to remove it... not good. I've been tempted to rig up a cable system to the shift fork arm attached to the actuator.
Would this actuator make a terrible noise when it goes bad? I just replaced both front wheel hub bearings on my 97'. Now, 5 days later it snowed, engaged the 4wd and it is making a horrible noise. Noise persists even after 4wd disengaged. I think 4wd still was working though.
+grady 180 If the 4WD isn't working properly it might make a noise. You may want to see if there is a vacuum leak somewhere in the 4WD system that could be preventing the axles from fully engaging. Hope this helps you out.
And then if your 4x4 still doesn’t work it’s probably becuof you shift linkage. This video will help, ford part 4 vacuum shift motor, fork engagement problem
Could a bad actuator cause a truck to try and engage 4WD on its own. It will try to switch while I’m driving on the highway and makes a horrible noise until I come to a stop.

You question I have a f250 97 light duty xl the dam thing will shift from 2 to 4 by its sort of what happens is you will be in 2 wheel and the light on the dash will light up 4 wheel then it will make a grinding sound and bang the light goes off what the hell is going on one other thing I was manually filling the tank and I could hear like selinod clicking on and of I look at the dash and the 4x4 light was going on and off. I brought it to a mechanic but it was not doing it I got the dam thing home it start doing it the next dam day help

No auto part store carries the right E-Clip. They used a C-Clamp in the video, which is the wrong part for the job. The Ford outdone itself on such a stupid design. Could of threaded the damn shaft on the actuator and use a nut on the opposite side. Wouldn't have to make that hole so tight.
He hammered on a screwdriver it looked like, but easy job my kit that does away with the vacuum system to a cable comes with a clip,$169, run it inside the truck like a hand choke, never fails.
I my 4WD just went out and the hoses have vacuum but the auctuator does not move. My rubber boot is gone. Does the rubber boot help with the vacuum or does it just protect against rust? I am noticing most auctuators do not come with the rubber boots and I am trying to figure out if I need to buy one seperate or not.
That's because your transfer case is engaging the front shaft but this shift actuator actually makes that transfer power through the front differential to the front axle shafts and on to the front wheels. In the old days, this was done manually on the outside of the vehicle with a hub engagement dial that usually moves a quarter turn. www.warn.com/the-benefits-of-manual-locking-hubs
After changing the actuator the truck still won't go out of 4 wheel to 2. Read some were you can drive it in reverse for a half mile and it will signal it to work again. You here of this
Lol y’all didn’t just clean up the mounting hole, you bored it out cause the replacement part doesn’t fit right. Every review I see of the replacement part from Dorman complains about this.

When you are knocking the old one out, do you have to pry the arm out of the actuator slot before knocking it out?

Mine made a terrible grinding noise. Disconnected actuator while I waited for new one to come and the noise was gone.

yall sell the cover for the actuator and as well as the clamp ?.. when I installed mine,I noticed my old actuator didn't have a cover and and clamp
