  • Located in the county of Kent, and at the closest point from mainland UK to continental Europe, is the town of Dover.
Dover has played a key historical role since all the way back to the Roman Republic. In 55 BC, Julius Caesar attempted to land in Britain via Dover. He was allegedly dissuaded by the sight of a force of Britons gathered over the iconic white cliffs. A Roman settlement would eventually form here, at which point it was known as 'Dubris'.
In 1066 after the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror marched to Dover and set fire to the castle. Then in the 12th century, under orders from Henry II, a new castle was constructed. Dover Castle stands to this day, sometimes described as the 'Key to England'.
During the 13th century, Dover was the target for several attacks by French forces. In 1216 a siege on Dover Castle was attempted by Prince Louis, but was successfully defended by Hubert de Burgh. In 1295 a French raiding party burned most of Dover to the ground. Centuries later, in 1670, Charles II signed a secret treaty in Dover with Louis XIV ending hostilities with France.
In the early 19th century, fortifications to Dover were constructed to safeguard against attacks from the French during the Napoleonic Wars. In the decades that followed, the seafront was developed with a view to transforming Dover into a seaside resort. This coincided with the arrival of the railway in the town in 1844.
During the First World War, vast amounts of men crossed from Dover on their way to the battlefields of Northern France. The first bomb to be dropped on England fell near Dover Castle on Christmas Eve 1914. As a consequence of this regular shelling from warships and bombing from aeroplanes, Dover residents were forced to shelter in caves and dug-outs.
Dover would play also play a key role in the 2nd World War. The Dunkirk Evacuations of May 1940 were masterminded by Vice Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay from his headquarters in Dover's Secret Wartime Tunnels beneath the castle. Over 200,000 men evacuated from Dunkirk passed through Dover. The town was subject to bombing and shelling by cross-channel guns, killing over 200 and damaging over 10,000 buildings. Dover became a symbol for Britain's wartime bravery and was at the centre of East Kent's 'Hellfire Corner.' In 1941 Dover was immortalised in song with the composition of "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", made famous by Dame Vera Lynn's 1942 version. The lyrics looked toward a time when the war would be over, and peace would rule over the iconic white cliffs.
To this day, Dover operates as a busy ferry port with services running to Calais and Dunkirk. It has also been the subject of controversy in recent years due to its role as the entry point for numerous illegal migrant crossings from France.

I've just started the video, and it's already looking cleaner than I remember it. This was my main delivery area for two years for Lynx Express and UPS.

It must be 18 since I was last there, so much has changed, especially the shops. GAME used to be on the other side of the road, and there used to be a hot dog/burger stall in the road in Biggin Street, great burgers. But great memories nevertheless, thanks for this.

I’m afraid this shows Dover in a good light. It’s a bit of a dump once you leave the centre of the town. The North end of the town is just awful.

It's nice to see a video about Dover that's not about Migrants.

Thanks! It's an important issue, but I feel like it's overshadowing the town itself.
