That is correct. In this video it is a deep cycle running all the graphs. It is separate unless combined with a switch. I have since replaced the deep cycle with Lithium. Always use lead or AGM as the starter.
IMO, yes you can and I did in my other boat. If you have the space/money a dedicated starter is insurance that you will always get back to the dock. Starting batteries (lead/AGM) are able to deliver extremely high energy extremely quickly to start the engine. Check out @EmilyAndClark
