Imagine being able to hold up a criterion blu ray and say “wait, was i in this?”
Imagine not being able to remember what movies you were in?
The alzheimer is kicking in
According to IMDb he was not in Lost in America
Gwyneth Paltrow does it every day.
@@calebboatman9840 He was in MODERN ROMANCE.
saw this guy at a diner in Martha's vineyard once
he was wearing a vintage Simpsons crew shirt
a legend
Love the plush James L. Brooks toy in the back there.
Thats statler from the muppets
@@michaeljohnson8645 Statler and Waldorf.
It's amazing that after several decades of changing media cultures and platforms, "Broadcast News" still holds up. One of the great screenplays ever written imo.
"Broadcast News" is as close to a perfect movie that can be achieved. The casting was flawless -- Holly Hunter, at 28 and still relatively unknown -- gave a timeless performance that is one of the best of all time.
@@jackm4457 well said. Hunter's performance/her character are all-timers.
"It must be nice to always believe you know better, to always think you're the smartest person in the room."
"No, it's awful."
As good a line reading as there's ever been
@@jessestoler2828 Yes, Jane Craig is an excellent character and Holly Hunter is spectacular in the part. Such a great film.
I can't believe Brooks is 80 years old here. 80!! He looks like he's only in his late 60's. Anyways, hey Criterion you should put out As Good As It Gets ;)
When you keep working on what you like / love, it will keep you younger
One of my favorite gags on The Simpsons is when the animators would throw in porno names of his films onto background, "Sperms of Endearment" and "I'll Do Anyone".
Broadcast Nudes is another.
The tramp in that scene (Got any spare change, man?) was based on him.
The Godfather’s Parts II and Jeremiah’s Johnson, I know their not HIS films but I was amused by those in particular
@@BenCol hey! You’re that guy who always comments on Calvin Dyson videos
That was on the season 5 episode where Springfield legalizes gambling, which leads to Honer working as a blackjack dealer, Marge getting addicted to slot machines, Bart opening his own casino in a treehouse, Lisa having no one help her on her Florida costume, and Mr. Burns becoming Howard Hughes.
That’s one of the dudes who brought us The Simpsons, hell yeah!
loved the John Cassavetes and Elaine May stories. I just watched "Mikey and Nicky" for the first time a few weeks ago, and that movie had such a wonderful, improvised feel to it. Can only imagine how much fun Cassavetes & May had on set for that one. and every Cassavetes story I hear on these closet picks videos just cements him more and more in my mind as one of the American film GOATs. love his work, and no one ever really has a bad thing to say about him. enjoyed James L. Brooks here, and his film Terms of Endearment might as well be called TEARS of endearment, because that one goes for the emotional jugular (great movie, though)
I MISSED THESE VIDEOS SO MUCH!
Should have directed more.
And we need a director's cut of I’ll Do Anything with the songs. I need to hear Nolte sing before I die.
Please make these longer! I could easily watch half hour eps of these.
As one who grew up watching THE SIMPSONS and FUTURAMA, I can definitely understand his picks here! So glad his films are part of the Collection!
Living and working in a popular northern California tourist town, we saw many people from the entertainment business, so it wasn't that big a deal, but I was NOT going to miss an opportunity to tell JL Brooks how much I admired his work when he and his wife stayed with us
He was very gracious and appreciative, and then wanted to know the name of the color of the Adirondack chairs out front because he liked it, lol
The master of the dramedy. Love Jim Brooks.
I love this man's work! Nobody is able to seamlessly blend warm humor with sentimental drama quite like he does. One minute I'm laughing out loud and the next minute I'm fighting back tears. I hope he has it in him to direct another film.
He's a genius.
They really should do a contest where one lucky fan can get in here. Give this comment ALL THE LIKES
He was definitely in Modern Romance, but I don't believe he appeared in Lost in America. His scene with Albert Brooks in Modern Romance was hilariously funny. He played a director, maddingly insecure and in need of constant reassurance. It's a classic bit.
Thanks for giving me one of my favorite TV shows, The Critic!
It stinks!
@@daftpunk89 "BUY MY BOOK!"
A show wildly ahead of its time. I'd love for the creators to get together and put together something as small as five minute shorts a couple times a year. Just something to comment on the current state of movies.
@@keithv2974 They did some Internet shorts, but no one likes or remembers them.
he kinda looks like an older (human) version of Milhouse
😂 that can't be a coincidence
One of my all-time heroes.
Watching these closet picks videos is my favorite hobby ❤️
He's referring to the "nest egg" discussion in "Lost in America," which is indeed pretty great. "Shampoo" is another great Hal Ashby film, and people should see every one of his works.
Hal Ashby is criminally underrated.
Please don't talk about eggs. Don't even mention eggs.
Love the way he isn’t holding back and the DVDs 📀 are flying into that bag! 💥
Love how they always grab the Criterion box sets.
These are so much fun too watch and them get excited about the films there talking about. Also the statler and waldorf is a nice touch in the back.. 😅
Wish Albert Brooks made more movies!
What a spectacular human being he is and team that he and Allan Burns were. I aspire to learn from him and one iota of his talent! 🏆
I first saw SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS in a UCLA film class. It's a masterpiece that uniquely blends comedy & drama.
Big Preston Sturges fan, what a guy.
Will watch Lady Eve again. Wasn't ready first time
One of my very favorite directors. Love Jim Brooks!
Need more Albert brooks love in these videos
I'll always read it as James Hell Brooks, from one Halloween special
Oh snap! Thee James L. Brooks! That's so cool.
He’s right about Albert Brooks, he is awesome .
One of our greatest directors made so great Criterion picks.
I just answered "yes" out loud!
1:59 Did Mr. Brooks end up taking that Whit Stillman boxed set, too? I can’t imagine him putting that back on the shelf, but.....?
I really love these, always finding something new through them. But, if I were let loose in there, those shelves would be bare when I left.
One of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Shame he's made so few movies.
Yeah. I only know him as one of the guys who created The Simpsons (alongside Matt Groening and the dearly departed Sam Simon) and Taxi (he also had a hand in The Critic alongside Al Jean and Mike Reiss). I want to see the movie side of him.
@@canaisyoung3601 This months I've being rediscovering his craft. Came to the conclussion that in spite he isn´t an auteur. The feeling and even the sensations are the same in the films he made, and are just like The Simpsons. Satires with smart humor, but at the same time a feeling of nostalgia, and family, that it can even show a dramatic side with happy/sad tears. He doesn´t have a perfect filmography, talking about Spanglish and How do you Know? But I highly reccomend, Broadcast News and As good as it Gets. I don't think that Terms of Endearment is as good or as fun as the others, but is the film that includes most of the sensations I'm talking about. Also his work as producer is underated. He basically discover Wes Anderson, Cameron Crowe and now Kelly Fremon Kreg, and of course Penny Marshall.
this is one of the most wholesome closet picks you have
I gonna to ask a totally unrelated question, can the two muppets sitting on the shelf behind Mr. Brooks still be purchased and if so where? Thanks in advance..😁
Wonderful guest!
One of my favourite writers 👍
I keep looking at Waldorf and Statler for some reason...
He’s in Modern Romance. Amazing.
crap, someone tell him there's a bluray of lady eve!
*As a Writer/Director (highlights)* *As a Producer only (highlights)*
Terms Of Endearment (1983) Big (1988)
Broadcast News (1987) Say Anything (1989)
As Good As It Gets (1997) Jerry Maguire (1996)
How Do You Know ? (2010) The Simpsons Movie (2007) +Writer
Also produced Bottle Rocket, which introduced the world to Wes Anderson
"broadcast news" is the only movie of his that i like. i don't like anything else he's done as a director. they're often sappy or just misguided.
@@thevoid99 so sappy you have to dry your tears with a pancake.
which Lady Eve does James mean? I don't recall that speech from Barbara Stanwyck's 1941The Lady Eve...?
I wonder what the point of these videos are. If it's that you hope to gain sales of the titles your luminary guests choose, then you might want to consider giving viewers an idea of what titles are being selected. More often than not, the guests do not exhibit any awareness of the viewer, and don't show the cover of the title. Or they mumble it, or the title is never even mentioned, or the name of the movie it's buried beneath a narrative of when/where/how the guest came to appreciate that movie.
Tip: ADD A LINE OF TEXT FOR EACH TITLE CHOSEN, either superimposed as they're selected, or at the end, like a slate with a summary, for example: James L. Brook's Picks: 1: xxx, 2: xxx, 3:xxx, 4: xxx, 5: xxx, etc., etc., so that viewers who might be interested in supporting you will know what you'd like them to consider adding to their collection.
James L. Brooks! Nice!
Wonderful. Love JLBrooks
the toilet flushing at the 2.12 mark gives it the sort of grounded realism these clips are usually missing.
Haha, thanks! I missed that easter egg that someone flushed ; )
Living legend!
Lost In America by Albert Brooks is underappreciated by the general public. A great snapshot of the 1980's and those insufferable Yuppies.
I think he was talking about about "Lost In America" when he was thinking he was an actor in the Albert Brooks film, but unless he was in the early party sequence I don't remember James being in that. He was, however, in a featured part in "Modern Romance" as a film director. He was great! One of my favorite Brooks films, I went with a co-worker and for weeks afterward we would look at each other and say "Petey - Ellen!" People thought we were nuts!
Yo! A new closet video!!!
Have they still not updated The Lady Eve in Criterion like Sullivan’s Travels???
0:17 What speech is that? I don't remember that from "Lady Eve". Can someone post the quote from that film?
I believe it comes when they are standing beside one another on a hill and the horse is between them. It might be his proposal of marriage to the Lady Eve, if memory serves.
@@douglascohen9617 Thanks for the info. It's been so long since I've seen that film, I don't remember that scene anymore. Will have to check it out again if my hero James L. Brooks recommends it.
🙏 thank you!
Thanks for this.
You were in "Modern Romance" not Lost in America. Both great
I can't stop looking at the audience members on the shelf.
These videos are so inspiring! Let me explain - I'm a filmmaker. And I want to make films which touch people's hearts, hopefully change their point of view about something, teach them something new about life. And most importantly make them fall in love with cinema. And it is my dream to be one those filmmakers who criterion collection calls to do one of these videos on this channel.
It sounds stupid I know, but yeah. 🤞🏼
I hope you get to have at least one of your films winds up in there, too.
@@lilivonshtup3808 That's sweet of you! Thank you.
I never even knew or even wandered about what J L brooks looked like until this video
I’m surprised he didn’t take ‘But What If You’re Wrong’
Love this.
Wow such diverse picks
Somebody switch out those DVDs for bluray before he leaves the building!
MAD RESPECT
So that's why The Importance of Being Earnest is currently unavailable. James L Brooks took the last copy
OOPs
are we getting one of his films then? would love to see As Good as It Gets on criterion ha!
Hey, Criterion. Do you ship to Indonesia now? If not, when?
Your best bet is probably buying on Amazon. When you buy directly from them, they won't ship outside America. Shame that they don't.
Some rambunctious Criterion employee placed a James L. Brooks doll right in the corner...
"The director of Broadcast News and Terms of Endearment" ...and also one of the main guys behind THE SIMPSONS maybe lol
Im here for the Statler and Waldorf stuffed animals.
LEGEND!
Amazing
LEGEND
legend. full stop.
“Can I call ya Jim?”
“James L Brooks will be fine”
For the love of Jake La Motta, can we get Scorsese in here???
Pretty sure Criterion doesn’t have enough take home bags for him. You know he’s gonna take everything in there and the closet episode will be like 45 minutes to an hour. Just sayin...😆
Scorsese's whole life is a Criterion closet video
@@timmckenzie8025 Scorsese wouldn't take lots of DVDs with him since he owns many of them and has seen a huge number of them. It's more likely that his video would be similar to the Mike Leigh one. He would pick a few classics (e.g. Rossellini, Cassavetes, Minnelli etc.) and say some interesting things about them. Sure would love to see it, though.
What did he pull by Cassavetes?
I can't believe I never clocked that he and Albert had the same last name. I know Albert's real last name is Einstein though.
"One day, one of the actors said he needed to take a paying job. Not only did John say no, that actor ended up dead from starvation!"
watched shampoo because of this video - wow. i had no idea ... well i did becasue of bonnie and clyde so i should have known better.
Aye Carumba!
Ay, caramba!
Looks like the bag was full before the camera started rolling.
The one and only James “Hell” Brooks
I want that jacket.
He is not showing the close up of the packaging. The best part is when they show the cover in front of the screen..
❤️
Make another movie, Jim! You and Nicholson! It's redemption time!
what a haul
Too bad we don't get to see Cassavetes' closet picks.
Hmm...interesting.
You'd think these characters would already own all these movies that they gush about in the closet.
I always assumed it was a hypothetical thing. Like movies you would buy or movies you would reccomend and the actual going into the closet with a bag is just a framing device to make it a more entertaining series.
@@2HackFrauds Not sure. The Aubrey Plaza episode definitely seems like a real free-for-all
Yeah I've felt kinda in-between on this matter. In some videos they'll say something like, ''I'm not gonna take this one, but it's a great film.'' Of course they'll usually give an extra thought or story about it too.
In some cases, perhaps they just psyched to get a newer, updated copy of it. If they already had it, you'd think they'd get something else. But then again it may have been the movies they wanted to talk and gush about the most. This is a great chance for them to give their top movie picks (within Criterion's collection of course) to a willing audience. Yeah I bet they give them time off camera to look at the closet's offerings.
it bugs me that the closet is still full of dvds and not blu rays
My favourite cartoon The Simpsons
shhh
*gracie films*
Would be funnier if he just shoved the movies without even saying a word.
Haha, that could be a funny, rude awkward comedy bit to do. The Criterion people after he left: ''well damn, I guess we won't be inviting James L. Brooks back.''
I wonder what actor, writer or director would be most likely to do this would be? I guess unless they thought it was really funny too they probably wouldn't upload it. It'd have to be short, possibly under a minute. The person would have to act with surgical precision with their pick grabs and be out of there.
Jim Carrey could be hilarious doing such a thing. I could see him doing a Tasmania Devil routine and knocking a bunch of movies off the shelves in the process. Hmm, maybe he shouldn't be invited ; )
I'm kinda joking as that seems more like a younger JC antic. He seems a lot more mellow overall these days.
