My young daughter, Victoria, and I took this ferry a couple of years ago. We headed straight to the Victoria, BC souvenir shops where they had lots of items with her name on them. We had high tea at the hotel, and bumped into a display of ornate Christmas trees in the hotel. Truly a trip to remember.
Living on Vancouver Island, and using the ferries fairly often, I just view the ferries as part of the highway system to get me to and from the mainland when needed. Never really thought they were all that interesting, lol. It’s nice to see it from other people’s points of view and how exciting it is for people who maybe don’t live near the ocean and get to take these types of trips or see these views regularly. Great video!
as a senior & a bc resident ( picture ID ) I ride the ferry Monday til Thursday free . that does not include a vehicle that has to be paid for. I travel all the islands as a days adventure. I recommend for anyone 65 or older as it’s very relaxing.
I usually sleep in my Van if I manage to get the top deck. If it wasn't for work and I had my family with me it would be different. Really it's just an opportunity for a nap as I usually need to take the first ferry.
I took the ferry a couple of times back in 97, it was very cool and special to me and will never forget. The beauty of it was seeing dolphins swim along side the ferry!!!
Your viewers may be surprised that almost as soon as you leave Tsawwassen (the Vancouver terminal), you enter US waters and don't reenter Canadian waters until the ship is about halfway across the Georgia Straits. The actual journey is about 1 hr. 35 min, but from the time you start loading to the time you get back on the road, you should bank on at least 2 hours. And that is without any other delays. You arrive at Swartz Bay terminal, just north of Sidney, and you are still a 30 to 45-minute drive to downtown Victoria. For first-timers, it's an exciting sail, for veterans like me, it's 90 minutes of nap time.
I rode this ferry about 4 years ago and i love the gift shop on the BC Ferry fleet, compared to the Washington State ferry fleet its alot smoother and more fun, the BC Ferries are alot more thought through
I do find it funny when people don't refer to it as "The Island" or "The Mainland" for some reason cause I've never really thought of people calling either place anything else.
The scenery on this route is always beautiful but on a nice day it's spectacular. Add the very good chance to observe marine wildlife, eagles, seals and sea lion, whales etc.
This class of ship is amazing. Love them. There is the "Spirit of Vancouver Island" as well. I loved traveling on these when I would frequently go between the Victoria area on Vancouver Island and the Mainland
I rode on Spirit of British Columbia’s sister ship, the Spirit of Vancouver Island, which looked similar. I got to see this ship pass on the way to Victoria.
i have been on the car. ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island . it's nice and calm journey and well worth visiting the famous rose garden [ Butchart Grdens ]
Welcome to Vancouver Island! If you're still around Victoria, my suggestions to check out: Victoria's inner harbor and government street for touristy sights including the grand legislative buildings, sometimes buskers, and shopping. Victoria's downtown Beacon Hill Park is like a 'central park' with nice walking, gardens, duck ponds, peacocks, and a children's farm and goat petting zoo that Travelling Princess might love. Also downtown: Fan Tan Alley & China Town are must-sees. A little further out: Butchart Gardens ($$), and right near that is Indoor Butterfly Gardens ($), and out of town in a different direction is Hatley Castle (used in some of the X-Men movies and Deadpool .. free to walk around outside with some nice gardens). From one UA-camr to another, thanks for what you do! My wife and I have both found your Vegas videos helpful! -Colin
To commenter, how bad is it now downtown - Victoria I mean. Lots of drug addicts? Not trolling, just seen some bad coverage, reality over the past few years.
We took this ferry from Anacortes Island, WA to Victoria, even though we were staying in Vancouver, years ago. So fun! We certainly made use of the kids play area, as well as ordered food, and sat outside and took in the beauty of the islands that we passed. Great memories!
I once rode this ferry (in the other direction) as part of a bus trip. I imagined the bus would deliver us to the port, and we would board another bus at the other end to get to Vancouver. But of course the bus just rolled onto the ferry, and at the other end rolled off and headed to Vancouver! On the way we enjoyed the ferry including a nice lunch.
Glad you enjoyed your experience! The fleet has changed a lot over the years. I'm not that old (early 30's) but I remember when the fleet was mostly comprised of what were known as the V class ferries. The last remaining one from that era is the Queen of New Westminster. Those ferries have a loud and rather nostalgic horn that you don't usually hear on the spirit class ferries. The history of fleet is pretty interesting as well. The Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route originally had 4 vessels. Queen of Vancouver, Queen of Victoria, Queen of Esquimalt, and Queen of Saanich. Originally in the 60's when they were built they only had one car deck. Then later in the late 70's as demand increased they did a major lifting project on all 4 ships that allowed them to place a 2nd car deck on them. They were the backbone of the BC ferries fleet for about 60 years. They gradually got phased out in favour of newer and more economical ships. The spirit class ferries were the first to take over those routes. They still had 2 V class ferries up until the early 2010's. Then Vancouver hosted the 2010 Olympics and had the new C class ferries that officially marked an end to the era of the old V class "Queen" ferries. Queen of New Westminster is the only one that still remains in the fleet. They retrofitted it with natural gas engines like the rest of the ships in service. Updated the interiors etc. It primarily runs the Duke point (Nanaimo) to Tsawwassen (Vancouver) route. But does act as a relief vessel on the Vancouver to Victoria route during peak seasons around the holidays and throughout the summer.
Its one of the older rust buckets. I am from Tofino & spend most of my time in Noth Vancouver. I deliberatetly reserve my ferry trips to avoid those ones and the worst part is there are even older ones. If you found this one amazing you would be over the top on one of the Coastal Class ferries. Those are the ones you want to be on.
As a European with ships as science I must say it is just a pain to see these Canadian barges that they call "ships"....whatever this or that class (that include the so called coastal class). When the heck shall north America get out of the stone age when it comes to maritime sector....???
Thanks for showing us a look at the ferry headed from Vancouver to Victoria. I am actually heading to Vancouver Island in June. I am really looking forward to the trip To be frank, taking the ferry is one of the highlights of my west coast adventure. I also enjoyed another video you filmed. I believe it was filmed in Victoria. On this trip, I will go to Fisher Mans Warf. I have never been there before. Another adventure on my bucket list is renting a scooter from Cycle BC. Renting a scooter is another highlight of my trip to Victoria. I like travelling around Dallas Road to Oak Bay on the scooter.
outstanding video ....you really covered every thing about the ferry ...for some one unsure about the b.c ferries you covered it all ... I remember being a walk on in the 80s and you would have to walk off the ferry from the car deck ..now they have a series of walk ways ...and now there could be hundreds of walk on ... in the 80s maybe a dozen or so .
awesome vid, thanks Chris ! I visit family in Seattle every year, and without fail, sometime during the trip, I jump on one of the ferries traveling around Puget Sound. I don't take my car, I just ride around as a passenger, have some lunch and wine, and soak up the views !!
In normal times, you were not allowed to stay on car decks. You had to go upstairs. Marine safety law. But with covid, it came in handy for "distancing", with only being able to stay in car on upper car deck.
Another great video. I have been watching your channel over the past few years and learned a great deal for my own vacation to the places you have visited and for my channel which I have just recently started. Hope you will keep the content coming.
The wallway out front is my favorite place to watch as the ferry travels through active pass. Very windy, and maybe closed at the time this video was taken.
Super Love this video! Thank you for sharing your experience. Had taken once after the city was lockdown so we had to spend most of time staying in our car. Only remember the food of White Spots tasted good 😊 Don't miss their fried chicken!
Remember your deck level and what end of the ship you are on. Don’t be the person running frantically around looking for your car as everyone else waits to disembark.
Riding the ferries during February can be rough. 10-15 foot waves if the weather swells up. The cafeteria will be one of first things to close. I remember my sister working on the ferries many years ago. I have rode more on the Queen Of Saanich and New Westminster than other ferries
Well .... a modern ship of that size shouldn't even move a bit given those tiny waves you talk about. ....but in north America the stone age still rules within maritime sector..... You get what you pay for ....so if you don't want to pay for more than a cheap barge you get a cheap barge......
just thought id provide some reference from someone who takes this ferry EVERYDAY; the buffet has been closed since the pandemic, the lounges have been closed significantly longer (probably a year or so before pandemic) ill nitpick here and say, this particular crossing takes closer to 1hr 45min barring on the side of 2 hours depending on where the vessel that is going the opposite way (sometimes one needs to stop for the other due to the narrow channels between the islands, this alone can take 5-10 minutes) in the summer you will see an abundance of marine wildlife, and if your lucky there will be a boomer or two on their patio on the gulf islands to wave to and a suggestion if you are going to eat onboard, you are SIGNIFICANTLY better off ordering online (there are qr codes literally everywhere) preordering online will easily save you 20-30 minutes in line, but if standing in lines are your thing, by all means but be weary of finding places to sit one final thing; dont mess with the employees (being late to your car for boarding/getting off, car being broke, etc) they are extremely temperamental and run a tight ship; few months ago guy fell asleep and the loadmasters loaded everyone behind him and left him behind (yes they can do that) ps be prepared for a lot of car alarms
Excellent video. I'm sure everyone else really enjoyed it too. Was this film in November 2021? Is the ATM machine give only Canadian money or the other give US money. Thanks again
You are no longer allowed to sit in your car during the ride. The transportation safety board has deemed it unsafe. You really should take the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. It's beautiful

Right on Stephanie :)
Yes, been too long. I stay on Lonsdale. Can’t wait.
Please advise where to stay on the island. Thanks
