The level were you meet the midwifes first. They scared me like hell back in 2000 and they still scared me like hell when I played this a month ago. Damn.
In 1998, there was half life. In 1999, there was system shock 2. In 2000, there was Halo. All 3 games were sci fi fps games with the antagonists from a novel called The Puppet Masters. (The head crabs, the flood and the many) Maybe that's why he was confused.
@@SIGNOR-G I played this game a few years ago for the first time, although it came out the same year I was born. Amazing experience. It begins terrifying and by the end you're sprinting around one-shotting mutants with more cyberimplants than robocop. Such a good game.
i found this soundtrack. it was so good that i buyed the game and played it just because of the soundtrack. and i have to say... IT'S A FUCKING MASTERPIECE
@@MasterZED544 I've gifted this game to a few of my friends on steam - out of the blue - just so they could play it, like this game needs to be experienced by gamers, there's nothing like it still!
Ugh I remember the hydroponics secter... Midwives everywhere.. which in my opinion were one of the scariest in that game... Hell most current gen games could ever scare me like SS2 could
I don't know why people sometimes say this soundtrack didn't work with the horror. I absolutely think it does. It feels frantic and unnerving with a constantly building tension, a feeling of chaos unlike any other game. Plus the game also has "classically" disturbing tracks in places, too.
This was the only game that terrified me with atmosphere, and yet somehow I forced myself to play it, id usually hide in a corner until the music picks up then I'd run out guns or wrench blazing!
Yeah, but this piece was not playing all over the hydroponic deck. Only in the more action orientated places. The more frightening places (like the places where the eggs were guarded by the midwives) had a much more calm, yet frightening music. Check out Hydro 2, and you will know what I mean. ;)
Cyberpunk that strays towards more industrial and gritty aesthetics and feel is 1000x better than the garbage 'Neon Tokyo' cyberpunk that has plagued us for years.
The cyberpunk Neon Tokyo aesthetic from what I see is imitating the 1980s. The gritty late 1990s to early 2000s cyberpunk aesthetic like in The Matrix and Deus Ex seems to be less connected to the the current idea of cyberpunk, maybe they're not old enough to be retro or too "timeless" that they seem to close to current times?
If it wasn't so forceful and aggressive it might not have been a villain, but it is. It does reach out to the player and reason with it, but just like Shodan it does not understand morals and commited horrors to the crew of the ship
If you look around at the comments, you will see people comparing this to a bunch of other music that sounds nothing like. Don't try to compare this to something, and if you do at least compare it to another breakbeat track. Nine Inch Nails would never make something like this.
@Karekristensson ye but there are so many companies tied to the system shock licence which makes it impossible to re-release it, especially without any DRM on GOG. EA originally published it, irrational developed it but used the dark engine which was developed by looking glass, which went bust so all their assets now belong to Eidos, which merged with Square-Enix. Anyways thx for the upload :)
I remember standing around this level just listening to the music. And ambushing the cyborgs who'd spawn down the hall interrupting the music with their random babbling about it being their job to worry.
@tHecOmMeNtErSrEtUrN Actully this inspired many games includding halo and Half Life ..system shock 1 came out on the 486/dx based pc's long before anything else and was considered very ahead of its time with the 3d enviroment and gameplay. A friend of mine was on the programming team for looking glass when they developed this one.
@eviltigz Looking Glass also developed Terranova and thief, again games which later on inspired other titles. Much of halos ideas came from terranova. As a side note I never had any problems running this one on XP..
@2HornDogs yeah i know what you mean, it was so terrifying and stressfull, nearly had a heart attack sometimes. but this game was so good that i HAD to keep going. but it wasnt a game i could play for long periods of time because the stress would get to me.
@Karekristensson I don´t want GOG to just release System Shock 2 i want them to release all Looking Glass studio´s games plus every single one of Origin´s games. Those where truly GREAT OLD GAMES
Played and loved all three. I'm not saying they're IDENTICAL, just that they're similar in many ways and it's understandable that someone would get confused.
Anyone else getting weird audio changes at 1:26? it's my favorite part of the song but it doesn't last as long as it should, but when I have a headset of any kind the beat lasts twice. this happens in the game files as well

As soon as the elevator stopped and that sinister synth bassline started, you knew you had not seen ANYTHING yet
Every game reviewer that complained about the music has zero swag and taste
Such a strange piece of music. High paced techno for one of the most frightening levels in the game. Still a good piece though.
the introduction of the midwife was the scariest thing in the whole game for me definitely
_I'll tear out your spiiiine._
