Thanks Jerad. I’ve been trying to decide which system to upgrade too. This helps a lot.
Appreciate the in-depth breakdown of the system.
Love your videos bro! Just got this system un Anodized and also got the single clamp with the venev resin stones :) plus gunny juice from 6 micron all the way down with individual leather Cowhide stropes for each on the pro :)! So I really have high hope for my sharpening now lol thanks for all the great content! Keep it up!
Thought about hitting that like button because of your wall !
Great vid!
Thanks Jarred.
I have the TSPROF - K03. I think its one of the best sharpening systems. I also use the Spyderco sharpmaker if i just want to touch up an edge. I dont have the nack for stropping and end up dulling the edge every time. Which blow my mind because I have freehand sharpened since I was a kid and only just got into using guided systems in the last few years. I agree the stones the TSPROF comes with are not aggressive enough. Especially when you are working with M390 and the like. I ended up getting a set of TSPROF diamond stones, and finally an Atoma 140.
Man... all there sharpening systems look absolutely awesome...
Great Intro! Thank you from Switzerland!
Your video has gotten me into this topic and I ended up ordering the K03 Hunter Pro Black Edition plus some Venev Ursa Stones. Thank you!
Only thing I am insecure about is how to sharpen a Miyabi Birchwood knife (63 Rockwell).
Very cool. If i had that kind of coin, I’d get it, but for now, the Worksharp precision adjust elite works just fine for me.
It really does look killer. I was close to getting one but I converted my worksharp to work with dmt diamonds and it's really working great. Still really wanting the kadet pro though.
I have both.. the Kadet Pro and the Kadet Blitz 360 Pro.. love them.. But I have the single sided Venev Stones. I also have the Atoma Stone but have not tried them. But even you can use the TSPROF stones. but like you said.. they can wear out faster.. that Is what I bought the Atoma stones. But.. I have been eyeing having the Jenede or the Haptstone Metalic Stones in the future.
Thanks Jared 😎
Been thinking of getting one. Have used a KME and wished they would upgrade to 6” stones and less rickety. Late night surfing showed a 10% off sale on kadet pro and that made the deal.
I've been using something similar build quality sucks but it does the job, I took 6 in by one flat stock aluminum apoxied a pice of leather add some metal polish to it mirror edge comes out 👌 I'm definitely looking to upgrade to something better
Hey Jared, I just picked up a KO3 on black friday because of videos like yours. I was wondering what technique you would suggest for removing a small chip from a blade on the TSPROF?
Great review! Which set of venev stones do you recommend?
Nothing will ever beat freehand sharpening on stones. You can reprofile and thin a knife and alter it to your likings. One can do coonvex or v edges and as high or low and one like. So thats the best knife sharpener out there in my eyes the skill to do it freehand.
I have the original Kadet. This looks like it has some nice upgrades
Very nice top-notch system
Can the tsprof clamp handle either fully flat ground blades or fully hollow ground blades with the standard clamp or do you need a different clamp? I am specifically think about 3 inch slip joints. Many thanks for such Informative videos Jared!!
Jared, I would like to see a video on how you touch up a knife on one of these style systems. I have worksharp and if my strop doesn't get what I want I feel like my 6 and 800 stones takes forever to get a burr. So I usually go thru the entire process again. Do u have to create a burr to touch up? Thanks
I have the work sharp precision adjust but I'm not a fan of the clamping system and it's annoying to remove the aftermarket clamp support everytime to flip it. One day I will pick this up it would be nice it it came with a hard case.
Hey Jerad! If you were going for a budget system for beginners would you go for a Worksharp Precision adjust or the beginning Lansky system or something else in that price range
Could I get a link to the stones you recommended? I am new to this and was overwhelmed when I saw how many options there were for stones, I want to make sure I am selecting the correct version. I just ordered this sharpener and am looking forward to giving it some workouts :)
Jared did you put the stone on the part where usually the aluminium base stays? Does it hold good or is it better to put a aluminium plate?
Hey jay quick question, do u put more pressure going up or down whey sharpening
Have you used the Wicked Edge? Just curious as to your experience if you have.
just spent an hour gluing shit to my stones for that thickness issue. someday ill have to get one of these.
How do you feel about the Wicked Edge?
Great video excuse my ignorance I'm new to self sharpening and I'm in the market I actually just purchased a work sharp professional precision. After I watched this video I clicked the link and noticed this sharpening system is twice the cost what makes this so much better? and is The work sharp a good system for individual use.
I’m looking at these systems as well. The Pro Hunter has a built in angle finder mounted on the rod itself, and I don’t think you have to adjust for stone height like on the one you show here, but it is like $900…lol. The main benefit of these systems is it will keep the bevel size the same on both sides of the blade. And exact angle position. I’m using a lansky right now and it’s a struggle to keep the blade in one position in the clamp..lol. I’m constantly checking it with a square on a granite plate so the angles will be the same, and still it’s not exactly the same on both sides….so yeah I feel the pain.😂
\
What do you recommend for kitchen knives? This system seems great for shorter knives, but the single point pivot seems like it would put a smiley edge on longer kitchen knives as the angle changes slightly from center to edge. Also, how shallow will it go? Will it do sub 10 degree? 8 degree?
Do you have a recommended "Entry level" sharpener thats a little more budget friendly? I have the Work Sharp Precision Adjust currently but finding Im pretty limited on knife size and the stones arent readily available for replacement via amazon or anything. Long shipping times to get replacements.
small feature they could have added was some vinyl or some kind of padding on the blade grips. but Kapton/Electrical tape works...
Darn it you sold me🤬, though I have a decent number of people I can already think of to sharpen for to offset the price. Thanks as always, keep it up.
Do you think this system would work on ice auger blades ? They have a much sharper angle, with a curve and neither bevel angle is the same- thoughts ?
Is there😂 any place I can buy some parts that attaches between the 2 holders the bushing and screw that goes into into the holder
Dam I want to get this bad boy , have much success with kme but this seems like it takes it to another level . The comments about the hefty price tag are ridiculous if your into expensive knives why not get a premium system even though there are many systems out there that get the job done I feel if your looking for a premium system that eliminates variables this looks like a great option regardless of price quality pays for itself . Appreciate the video and your time thanks Neeves .
Plus, you really do get what you pay for these days.
I feel that the KO-3 is worth almost every penny...
Question please, i have venev industrial stones, it sharpens knifes great up until 800 grit, at 1200 grit it dulls blade, i use axicube angle, to maintain same angle, but it doesn't help, so i have to re use 800 grit to bring my sharpness back, any suggestions?
whats the advantage vs the work sharp sharpener? I see its obviously higher quality, but not sure the justification works for me to move to this system when they look relatively the same
My question is this...your pulling and pushing the stone across the blade? I was always shown to push, not pull? Does it make a difference?
Kapton tape isn't abrasion resistant, it's heat resistant. I mean ... any barrier will limit the ability to abrade. But, as a product, it's used in SMT: Soldering // PCB rework, etc, bc heat doesn't cause a loss in tack & its amazingly non-conductive (thermal). Great results btw. The consistency of the finish after those venevs looks excellent. Maybe in person you can see a scratch pattern in the light ... but on camera I'm unable to see it. I definitely wonder if the stone adjustment is actually what it's purported to be ... bc unless the angle is set on the first stone, adjusting for subsequent stones will be the cotangent ... and not a line that's parallel. Just think it through and you'll get what I mean ... I'm just not sure something is better than nothing.
Is that soapy water you are using with diamond stones?
I really liked this review! I have a couple ofd questions though. What is a "low angle"? Is that 10 degree? What is a "small knife" ? Is that my victorinox keychain knife blade? I am kidding a bit here, just pointing out that "low angle" and "small knife" are subjective/undefined terms.
I prefer the Worksharp Precision Adjust Pro, but I love my TSPROF too. I just got a Wicked Edge and that seems like it’s taking the #2 spot lately.
I have it ranked like this…
#1. Worksharp P.A.P.
#2. Wicked Edge
#3. TSPROF
How well does it work with big knives? Like 6 to 10 inch blades
I’m curious why I see so many people sharpening exactly like you did. What I’m getting at is why are people running their stones almost parallel to the cutting edge? Under a microscope edges that had grooves perpendicular to the cutting edge were sharper than edges with a fair amount of grooves that ran parallel to the edge.
I learned this info from a UA-camrs that’s into high end vintage razors. He started using a microscope to help him devise the best process for the sharpest edge possible. I own a precision adjust and Worksharp instructs you to zigzag the stone as you’re going down the length of the blade….. wouldn’t that be a better technique on and clamp/guided sharpener?
What are you spraying the stone with? Soapy water?
Can anyone reading this please tell me the main difference between this Kadet Pro and the K03 Pro Hunter? Other than the integral angle finder on the K03 Hunter and heavier base? I already have a Wixie digital angle finder. (Don’t see a flat place to use it on this Kadet Pro though….)
Thanks for any info, it’s like pulling teeth to understand the differences, and now evidently the K03 Pro Hunter comes with “poly critic” plastic on the angle adjustment instead of the aluminum part it used to come with, further confusing things? I like the quick angle adjustment on this Kadet Pro, but am looking for a system that can also take thicker spine knives over the Blitz and think this will work. Although what the K03 Pro Hunter offers for $300 more other than the angle gauge and heavier base I’m not sure.
While I have absolutely nothing against TSPROF, they’re amazing. I use the wicked edge pro gen 3. I have gotten insanely sharp knives (still takes practice I promise lol). But I also do it as a business. I can’t tell you “it’s the best” cause it’s $1100. It’s the best for my personal use. But if you’re just looking to get into sharpening and have some money I’d go TSPROF 100%. For me though wicked edge is where it’s at :)
👊
I still got my old KME always fancied a wicked edge mind, but this one look nice and solid it all comes down to that bang for buck at the end of the day. Plus will it take a bit of abuse and other makes stones/ add on bits or is it built in such a way that if it’s not from the makers of the system then it’s not going to work. Ohhh what pressure there is on humanity 😉😂 then again you could just master the art of free hand sharpening ain’t that right old Jerad the edge magician as you are. Saying that Jerad what do you actually prefer taking all the money and time out of it. It’s your blade would you rather free hand the lot or do half on the machine or all on the machine? And I’m talking about your blade needs a good bit of work say it’s got a 1mm dent so it’s gotta have a re profile job. Feck I’m on a make you reply without it being just emoji days hahahaha . Have a beautiful day J&k stay safe and healthy both 🏴😘👍
I'm curious how you chose to use kapton tape? I've only ever used it in electronics building and repair situations, and I think your channel is the only time I've seen it not in the same context. Its properties make complete sense to use here, but just wondering how that came to be.
I'm not sure it's necessary on non coated blades.
How would you say this compares to the wickededge system?
I recently picked my kadet pro, I upgraded stone holders and I also picked up the L Adapter that allows me to position the clamp closer to each other and also extend it as well for longer knives. I have question for you... what Single clamp do you recommend for sharpening PM 2 and Para 3 on, the Single fillet clamp or Single clamp ? Thank you I appreciate the video!!
I haven't tried them yet but am going to probably get the single clamp to start with. Because it should except the thicker spines, the filet one will work better on lower angles and thinner blades for sure, but I don't see you having any issues with low angles on the regular single clamp
5:30 could you hold a paper toward the knife instead?
Can you sharpen a round knife with this unit?
How much pressure is used on the knives?
Thank you! Now best budget options, if you have not already done so. (
This.
I know he was a fan of the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite.
Im still rocking my lansky fixed angle system, but its definitely time to upgrade.
Considering none of my knives are even $150, it wouldnt make sense for me to drop $500+ on a sharpening system.
Once im willing to invest in more premium knives, then maybe id be willing to invest in a more premium sharpening system.
What is the name of the tape he uses again tyvm
This prof pro is the one ☝️ no joke!
What type strops do you use with your guided system? Also have you checked out the L-Adapter for the kadet? It allows you to put your clamps in the center to hold smaller knives and extend them out farther for longer knives. It's kind of expensive for what it is, but well worth it in my opinion. Thank you for all the videos and advice you are giving. It has helped me tremendously since I first started sharpening knives.
Where can you get the L-adapter?
It does have a lot of useful features on it and would be great if you truly can't freehand. There is a learning curve to all these sharpening systems. It's always best to just practice a few hours a week and get good at freehand. I love my edgepro but it's sooo much easier and faster on bench stones
Nice video, could you direct me to one of your videos on how to clean and condition Venev Centaur Series Dual Side Diamond.
I believe I made a short, I also did some live in a members live Sharpening, but you want to get a lapping plate, like a flat piece of glass or granite, the Silicon powder, add a drop of water and rub your stone on the powder. I will see if I can find a video
What about the blitz pro? Just curious because I been wanting to transition from a worksharp eliet system and tsprof is what I've been eyeing. They Just have so many systems I'm lost.
Me too. They make beautiful systems, with a dozen variants and packages, but their ability to explain the differences to allow you to make an informed decision just sucks. Truly terrible marketing. Gritomatic is even worse if anything, with assumptions galore and no explanations for anything. I’m surprised either company is still in business. I have like 40 questions on this and the K03 Hunter and the clamps and the default stones and the pricing that no one can answer. Guess I’ll just save the $1000 I have set aside and buy more knives and continue to freehand sharpen on diamonds.
Can you or anyone recommend a sharpening system for 20" Wakizashi?
That rod collar is supposed to be snapped to the rod. You flip the rod so the stone is facing up and the slide it in the holder.
I like it. One need Jerad should recommend is a cut glove. Your moving the stone & your finger towards the edge!! I think you convinced me. I’m gonna pull the trigger. I use the Lansky. It works but is very limited-& I have the cut glove already. What’s the word on supply chain issues? It’s the double whammy 1st with Covid & now the war & associated sanctions. Any problem getting accessories for it from Russia?
I haven't had any issues w/ getting a Master Kit directly through TSPROF - I did have to wait a few weeks until the Allen drivers were available.
Great customer service, I might add...
You can order the TSPROF and any stones from Gritomatic. They are located in the good old USA. So no sanctions.
@@justinhoward1406 thank you that’s very useful, I checked them out & I’ll order from them.
Love you too!
Here's the problem as I see it with sharpening systems that clamp the blade:
They work perfectly for blades with flats at the spine as the clamp jaws are parallel to the flats. However, for a Full Flat grind blade, there is no flat at the spine. The blade sides are angled all the way to the edge. This means that the parallel jaws will be clamping on a non-parallel blade with one clamp jaw being parallel to the blade grind and the other will be at some other angle to the blade grind. This will lead to uneven edge bevels. Am I wrong or is there some way that these systems compensate for Full Flat Grind blades?
I think you are correct as applied to those particular clamps...but tsprof makes clamps specific to address that issue.
Hope that helps .
Whats the liquid ur using?
Wow !
Man it's pricey but I need one. I guess I'm willing to spend that much on a knife so I should have one.
you spray bottle says water only yet there are soap bubbles on the knife as you sharpen the knife. What formulation do you use. Thats definitely not just water in that bottle.
I've been seriously thinking of getting this. I'm kind of torn though. I have a KME with full set of both KME diamond stones as well as a full set of Venev stones for it, all the way to their 1500 stone. The TFPROF is both a better system as well as being able to use 6" stones which is a huge plus, and the main reason I'm thinking of the upgrade!. It just sucks that I have the full set of 4" venev stones. Yes, the TSPROF will take them, but what's the use of upgrading to a 6" system if you're going to use 4" stones? This means shelling out another $200 for 6" Veneve, as well as the well over $400 for the system. I'll end up shelling out about $700 total after stones and strops.UGH! This hobby is killing my bank account!! 🤣
I had the KME - now the KO-3, no comparison!
The TSPROF is the Cat's Pajamas...
@@davestelling Yea, I know it's a much better system, and I'm going to upgrade. Just need to wait till Christmas spending is over and can reload my bank acct a bit.
@@Mr_Obvious
Good luck, I think you'll be impressed!
I had that problem few years ago, because I had used thr kme almost exclusively for several years and was heavily invested in their stones and aftermarket ad well.
But since thr tsprof accepts that format I gave it a shot, and I haven't been disappointed in slightest. Yes 6" format works faster, but thr precision in thr tsprof over the kme is night and day.
If your on thr fence just go for it...and little by little you can convert to 6" but honestly it isn't required to get thr full benefits of this system
Looks like a great system but a bit overpriced yes the machining is good and it's solid no doubt but the cost is on the high side. Hopefully as other manufacturers get in the sharpening business we will see prices go down. I agree 100% about the venev stones they are great and give you incredible edges. I use a DMT XXC (Extra Extra Coarse) for reprofiling then switch to venev for the rest of the sharpening just to make then last longer. After the DMT one wears ot I'll definatly be trying the Atoma ones out. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
I like to think that a really good quality pocket knife is 150+ so a quality Sharpening system would be worth atleast a couple of those, but the amount someone will usually spend depends on the knives they have in there collection.
@@NeevesKnivesthat's a good point... Thanks for the reply..and other great video.
@@NeevesKnives how well does the ts prof clamp work on the distal tapered spyderco blades
@@TTT-du6oj you can get other clamps that work better with spydi blades but you can still pull it off, the other ones better though, i do rec eventually getting the other clamps theres a bunch but you really only need one or maybe 2 others,
Hi Jared, I am still considering buying but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I am a fan of smaller knives specifically the maileah, odium, and lieb which I own . Will I be able to sharpen these smaller knifes to 17 degrees on the kadet pro or will the stone interfere with the clamps ?
You want the kadet pro, with extra clamps, you can get different clamps for different blades with the pro series
@Neeves Knives thanks Jared, one more question please. I see TSPROF has a special on the K03 unit at $558 including diamond plates. The Kadet Pro with the same plates is currently $ 525. It seems like the K03 is currently a better value. Is there any downside to the K03 over the kadet pro 🤔?
@@kenny-Poo i havent tried the k03, and im not sure but i know the k pro allows multiple different clamp sizes if the ko3 does the same then it could be better but im not sure
Looks like a lot of fussing around to me. I have the Norton Multi stones and do well with all knives except my filet knife..The Norton is large, bulky and has an oil reservoir...looking to replace..
Hey brother, what do you think of the grindjunkie sj multigrinder? That system seems to offer more than any others do
I ment to say grindjunkie multigrinder 2.0
I just looked it up I've never tried it but I'm gonna look into it
Mine just arrived today it's awesome but it doesn't come with stones you have to buy them separately it's a bit pricey but if you have aftermarket diamond Stones up to 6 in it will accommodate them
By the way brother they only have about one or two more available for sale so if you want to test it you should order it soon
Just a heads up. Max angle it can reach for the secondary bevel is like only 26-27°. So unless you wanna reprofile your thick man jewelry knives, just be aware
TSPROF does have an "Extended Angle" accessory...
@@davestelling
Not for thes models. k03, 02 and another past one only.
Is that per side or inclusive?
Please do a beginning to end sharpening sequence
Matt over at Knife Krazy does some very fine demonstrations w/ the TSPROF...
Is it some kind of soapy liquid because it lathers so much?
I use dish soap and water mixed
Jerad, do you have a stone recommendation. Atoma? Venev? Grits from reprofiling to nice toothy finish. (I’m not into mirrors.)
Atomas are great get q 140 or 400 ,600 and a 1200, 600 grit is a great toothy edge that is also fine enough for everything
Like those better than the Venevs?
@@MrEric0822 no the venev are better but they are also more expensive and take a bit of maintenance, the atoma require no maintenance and will give you a toothy edge just the same and are better for reprofiling. The venev are better because they can go to a polish and they last a very long time they don't wear out fast
@@NeevesKnives I kinda want to go the Venev route just for something different since I’ve had the KME diamond stones forever. I have a couple of the big Venev combo stones for hand sharpening and I like the feel and finish. If I went the Venev route, what would be a good set for progressing from reprofiling to finish? Thx Jerad!
@@MrEric0822 YEAH DEF IF YOU WANT THE BEST THEN VENEV IS THE WAY TO GO , I WOULD GET ONE ATOMA 140 FOR REPROFILING IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING WITH THICK GEOMETRY OR IF YOU WANT TO DO LOW ANGLES BECAUSE IT CUTS REALLY FAST THEN MOVE TO THE VENEV STONES
Do you prefer the mechanical or diamond plates for sharpening?
I love freehand Sharpening most but fixed angled is still really nice, freehand takes more dedication
I'm still trying to free hand and I'm getting better but in no way and I doing acceptable work and end up using my knife sharpener. That knife sharpener is nice and one of the better ones I've seen but it's just way to much. I've Frankensteined one together using an older unit then I bout some stainless rods and make my own stones to fit the rods. It's not the device that makes it sharp it's the quality stones you are using. If money didn't matter I'd definitely buy that one for sure but unfortunately I don't have that kind of money to spend on a sharpener.
What is the brand of stones you are using.?
i mostly use atoma and venev i shoulda linked them in description you can also check my neevesknives store in most recent vids
Doesn’t the angle change along the length of the blade if you have a fixed radial point?
yes by a tiny bit but theres nothing you can do about that so its good to just have a good starting point, and in most cases its very minor. also the thickness of the grind changes on the knife which will make the bevel thicker and thinner in areas but thats how its going to be no matter what esp with a fixed angled system
@@NeevesKnives got it, so what would you think is the upper length of knife for one of these - an 8 or 9 kitchen knife maybe? No doubt fine for my 4” deer knife
@@cheefussmith9380 id say for this model the bigger the better with the clamp they send, you can always get a different clamp for different size knives which they sell sep, but you can probably get up to a 10 to 12 inch blade, the small ones will be the issue without a different clamp
@@NeevesKnives terrific, thanks for your time!
Neeve can you please give me the exact name and email where i can buy this knife sharpener that you state in your opinion is the best hands down sharpener. Thank you so much buddy.
This one's one of the best I've tried however they have a new more affordable one that's really good as well

Also I recently did a review on Hapstone which is also really really good checkout that video, or just go to my most recent videos in the description is the hapstone link.
I want this. I think I'll just buy all the parts though, and make my own system. So much cheaper
Can you sharpen larger butcher knives on that setup? or is it only for smaller knives?
Ofcourse yes, if you want to to really big ones go with the K03 from TS prof
Awesome! Just ordered mine along with the suggested upgrade stones. Thanks !@@NeevesKnives
I'd like to see a Prof put up against the
Jende Accu-Drive. Or at least someone
as competent as Jared to review it.
Or, Matt - aka Knife Krazy!
@@davestelling Actually, yes.
Can you add Turkish subtitles to your videos?
Do they have a convex rod you can get?
TSPROF has a small accessory that attaches to the stone holder-rod to fashion convex edges...
👏👏👏
The rod holder is supposed to be fixed at the rod, clamped on the joint.
Clamps limit versatility. Edge Pro uses a table rather than a clamp system and that allows for moving the blade freely right to left while keeping it in contact with the table to maintain angle. It's also safer than a clamp system because it's harder to fall into an unclamped knife that moves with you. Aside from a bit of a learning curve, it's just a better system for a variety of reasons.
I love my Edge Pro Apex 4
I have the professional model and make quite a bit of money with it. Best sharpening system I've ever used.@@michaelvanbuskirk8845
I agree and also have an apex
But being able to move the blade left to right freely like that doesn't always work or allow you to maintain your angle.
If your knife has a straight spine, this may work, but if your knife does not have a straight spine, as you move your knife left to right, your edge moves forward and backward along the table, especially near the belly and the tip, which necessarily changes your angle giving you inconsistent results.
It's just the nature of the beast with these fixed angle systems.
If the edge is straight across, it doesn't matter how long the blade is, a constant angle will be maintained. But if your edge is heavily curved where part of that edge curves towards the back of the sharpener, your stone necessarily has to rotate downward to reach that curve which obviously increases your sharpening angle making it more obtuse.
Conversely, if you have a hawkbill style blade, as your blade curves away from the back of the sharpener (out towards you) , your stone necessarily has to lift up to meet that angle which obviously makes your edge more acute.
Let me offer some counterpoints to why I don't think that a flat table system like the Edge Pro is the best.
To be clear, I don't think a clamped system is the best either, I think they all have their pros and cons.
I hope some of you will read all I've wrote and perhaps offer some solutions to even one or two of my issues I laid out below, mainly the last two as they're the most aggravating.
I currently own the Edge Pro Professional model and it's a great system in many ways and well-built, but here are some of the cons and frustrations I found with it and these are some of the reasons I am looking at adding a clamped system to complement it :
1) *A stone thickness compensator does not always come with the kit, you have to get aftermarket parts to get that functionality and they're a bit clunky to use.*
They're not quick and easy to operate when setting the initial stone on any given knife and sharpening session, after that they're fine though. But you have to go through this annoyance every time you start a new knife or reset the blade stops to position the knife in a different spot on the table (if adjusted substantially).
2) *There is no good place to put your angle cube.*
Measurements are close at best as there is no nice, large, flat surface to rest your angle cube on. What surfaces there are on the stone holding arm are small and non-magnetic so it's a fumbly experience trying to get an accurate angle measurement using one hand to hold the angle cube in place and another to both unscrew and loosen the lock to change the sharpening angle and then using that same hand to change the angle and then finally tightening the locking screw back up (while trying to hold the angle in place which is tricky!).
Better hope you don't accidentally bump the angle while trying to hold it in place when you tighten the locking screw! It's super easy to mess your angle up! Frustrating!
3) *Changing stones is not as ergonomic and convenient as shown on this and other clamped systems.*
This is because you can't hold the ball at the end of the stone arm in your hand and then use your pointer and middle finger to pull back on the front stone retainer while you use your other hand to swap out the stones.
Changing stones is sort of the opposite procedure from what's shown here in that the front retainer nearest the ball is not spring loaded, the rear stone retainer is spring loaded instead so you have to push the stone backwards to unlock it. It doesn't sound so bad but when actually doing it you find it's not nearly as nice as the way the clamped systems do it and I often wish it matched the way shown on this clamped system.
4) *Certain knives with certain plunge grinds and blade profiles are difficult to sharpen on the Edge Pro.*
Knives like the older generation (pre-CQI) PM2 are difficult because the blade nearly matches the width of the table and the tip is too short (from spine to edge) so that you can't keep it clear of the table to sharpen if trying to use any of the different blade stops Edge Pro offers and using the plunge grind to line up the blade left-to-right on the table (using the plunge grind as an additional side stop).
It is the angled plunge grind on these early generation PM2s (and other knives which have its same issues) which are creating this problem. None of the blade guides, not even the small blade attachment, keeps the blade high enough and lifted off of the table enough to avoid running your stone into the table and allowing you to keep your stone aligned with the plunge grind.
When you do get your blade set as best as you can, you cannot get your stone lined up with the plunge grind, you have to come at it at a pretty decent angle which does not leave a very pretty sharpening job.
5) *Finally, this is one of my biggest gripes, on knives which have a high saber grind and only a small bit of parallel flats near the spine of the blade, you cannot securely locate on those areas for sharpening.*
If you try to locate on these small flats, when you apply downward pressure with the stone to sharpen the knife, you inevitably end up pushing the edge downward which rotates or lifts the spine upward completely destroying your sharpening angle.
You instead have to use the larger flat area which is your primary bevel but that often kicks your spine high enough that you cannot press it against the blade stops on the table as it is now _*higher than the stop *_ so when you apply pressure from the sharpening stone to sharpen your knife, the blade slides around on the table (sometimes pushing your knife on top of your blade stop screwing up your angle!) because it's not locked in place.
I've tried a variety of different guides or blade stops offered by Edge Pro from the small blade attachment to the standard large blade attachment, and even the 3-point sliding blade guide which is my favorite, and all of them exhibit this problem.
Using the strong magnets in the table does not overcome this problem either. You really have to strain to hold the blade in place. It quickly makes you wish you could clamp the blade in place, hence the desire to get one of those systems.

did it come assembled? looks like a good system, fool proof
No. Assembly required
It's not foolproof. You need to do some thinking and planning with fixed edge systems. The angle you sharpen at is consistent but the knife probably won't be (save for a wharncliffe or similar). It is great once you know how to use it but it still takes experience.
@@joshevans3452 Dude compared to Freeland stones, it's a huge help in keeping the angle...yes of course set up and learning the system is a necessity
@@JoeSteel1 I'm well aware of each set up's pluses and minuses. This is a reply asking about guided vs freehand for the uncoordinated.
"...That said, I have and use both a guided system (Hapstone) and free hand stones. I have learned how to use both and do other activities, like "fine" woodworking with hand tools. In every case, it is a matter of adapting to your abilities and limitations.
In this particular case, I would compare sharpening systems to music. Guided systems are like classical. It is all about how you plan, set up, and execute. Freehand is like jazz. It's about feel based on repetition and knowledge. With the guided system you need to carefully think about how the angle changes with the blade shape. You need to check that the angle isn't drastically different from heel to tip and on each side. Freehand, you just change as you go and you can feel the edge. The thing with freehand that scares folks with poor motor control in their hands is not holding the angle. However, the thing is that your hands aren't really holding the angle. I have learned to lock my wrist and elbow and use my shoulders and/or body. It takes some practice but, if you can do it if you can stand and have full range of movement in your upper body. Guided systems are more precise if you set them up properly. I use it on my higher end folders. I could get it just about as sharp freehand but it won't look as pretty."
@@joshevans3452 Fantastic anology friend...great comparison, enjoyed the discussion 👏
How does it compare to the new Worksharp Pro Premium
Well it's much more expensive, in my review of the work sharp I talk about this system. The benefit is you can use any stones you want
Thanks. If money weren’t an issue which one would you give the nod to? I have several Venev 6” stones.
What a load of humbug! Learn to freehand. I had a Wicked Edge and it was a pain "in the place where the sun never shines".
I learned to “freehand” in 1963. This may not be any better, but it is a more uniform and faster system. If you don’t want to use it, knock yourself out.
so you wet your diamond stones prior to use? huh?
Is that like the wicked edge?
Yes and no, it's similar in the sense that it holds the blade while you sharpen, however you can use ant kind of stones you want with this, you are limited with the Wicked
@@NeevesKnives is that available?
