Awesome video! Thanks for making it. If you want the canvas to roll up in a tighter roll you can either fill the pvc pipe with sand or use a heavier pipe. Thanks again.
A company near me that manufactures roll tarp systems for grain hopper bottoms and tipper trailers has a vertical system with a crank and side channels. Your idea is much more simple and just as effective. I like canvas tarps so I'll go with your idea when I get rid of the dented up steel overhead door that served many years as the boys' back stop for baseball. Nice presentation.
Awesome. I had a tarp up and said there had to be a better way to manage opening it. Thanks soo much. I'm headed to menard's now to buy my pulleys etc and begin the project. Great job and video
This is exactly what I was looking for idk why but my brain shut off on me! Lol as soon as I watched this I was like Duh girl what's happening to your own thinking abilities?! This is so simple and I was making it complicated! 😂 Thank you for sharing this I appreciated it.
Great design and helpful explanation. I notice when the tarp rolls up, it has the roll on the outside. If I want the roll to be on the inside, I guess I just need to re erse the rope set up i.e. pull line on the inside, and fixed end of the line on the outside. Is that right? And do you have any comments on pros and cons of each approach? Thanks.
@@Mrbhoagie Hi, and thanks for that link. I couldn't find the width I was looking for. My project is to protect the open end of my carport, which is 18 feet wide. I use it primarily as an outdoor work/storage shed. I've resorted to plan 'B,' which is to buy individual tarps to cover my lawnmowers and tools I store/use in my carport.
@Brad Hohenstein Hi, Brad, thank you for getting back to me. I've got a 3 metre X 3 metre gazebo with two heavy duty tarpaulins on two sides that fit pretty much like yours. What size roughly are the pulleys and how many did you fit on yours ? What grade/type of cord would you suggest too and how much length? I've got integral pockets at the base of my tarpaulin so I can slide a piece of square timber or pipe through .Once again, brilliant engineering feat with yours!! Regards, Jerry.
Hello Jerry, I’m not sure of the pulley size. I used 1/4" diameter rope and pulley to fit. I think you would want no more than a 5' between pulleys. Make to use a round pipe or dowel in the bottom of your tarp so it will roll smoothly as you pull the rope. Good luck! Brad
Thank you for the video, great idea! Could u pls explain how u made pipe rolling up and not just lifting? I don't think u use any spring in the setup to roll the tarp to the pipe, do u?
Wondering if the rope/cable causes any wear on the tarp itself. Was thinking of this idea for a wood shed enclosure at the lake. Awesome idea. Thx for sharing
Thanks for the instructions. How did you attach the cords to the bottom? So there are 2 cords that meet at the double pulley you have tied together to make 1 cord? Thanks
I just used one cord which becomes two cords when I cut it. You need to take both ends of the cord through the first double pulley (left side where you pull to open) run both cord ends through the 2nd double pulley (middle pulley). Take one of the ends straight down the front of the tarp and back up the backside of the tarp and fasten to the header with a screw and washer. Then take the other end over through the single pulley (far right side), down the front of the tarp and up the back of the tarp. Fasten to the header board with screw and washer as shown in the video. Now you are done and you will have the looped end of the pull cord hanging. I cut it to length which leaves two cords hanging. I tied the two together.
I wonder If you could cut a door out and put in a zipper door system ? If the edges were taped up good , it would probably still work . Great idea ! I want one
Planing to do this as curtains for my patio but think I may wrap the string around the pvc so it spins it tightly as it goes up. Hopefully it will work
Picture 2 cords and a double pulley at the front corner, a double pulley 1/3rd of the way across, and a single pulley 2/3rds across. Both cords run through the double pulley and through the 2nd pulley. 1 cord drops down from the 2nd pulley down the front of the tarp and back up behind the tarp and is fastened to the wood header. The 2nd cord continues on to the single pulley then drops straight down the front of the tarp and back up the backside of the tarp and fastens to the header. That's it!
Thank you, got a 12x16 lean to pavilion in Hawaii wet area planning something similar with threaded nursery tarps hanging from edge of the roof and mesh tarps flush to the structure, was thinking a wheel bolted to the ends of the pvc for a bit tighter roll, possibly capped filled with sand or dirt(free) for extra weight. Love some advice if anyone has 😅 thanks 🤙
I don't think you need a wheel. It rolls up perfectly as long as the pipe us straight.. The rope rolls it as you pull it up.. If doing again I would replace the pvc pipe with a metal pipe as he PVC pipe has bowed over time. Once it bows, it doesn't roll up tightly. A little heavier would be good but not too heavy. Maybe an aluminum pipe? Not sure as that may cost too much. I think adding sand to the inside of the PVC pipe would worsen the bow in the middle.
Pulling the string pulls the inner string up through the pulleys. This action causes the pipe to roll and since it is attached to the tarp, the tarp rolls around the pipe. The tarp and pipe roll up between the two strings, not on top of it.
since this is all relatively lightweight, I'm sure you can get away with using 550 cord- www.homedepot.com/p/Extreme-Max-5-32-in-x-250-ft-Type-III-550-Paracord-in-Black-3008-0459/306535376 double- www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-2-in-Nickel-Plated-Swivel-Double-Pulley-42604/205887572 single- www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-4-in-Nickel-Plated-Swivel-Pulley-43334/205887648 cleat- www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-4-1-2-in-Chrome-Plated-Rope-Cleat-43414/205887542

If anyone can describe in detail or provide a link to something similar that was done I would really really appreciate it, because I am at a loss on how to set this up outside

I see in the video you mention securing the rope inside with screws I'm just trying to figure out where that rope is from? Maybe there is something I have missed in the video I think I realized what I missed now question is is the rope secured to the pipe at the bottom at all?
I used a pvc pipe which is light. It will roll-up tighter if you use an iron pipe or if you use a lighter duty tarp. Have you actually made one? If so please share a helpful comment.
@@Mrbhoagie Had a new tractor shed built. The door is 9 ft high and 12 ft wide. I used a hd poly tarp. Just what I was looking for. Great work!
Very well done. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Hi Brad! Can you share the rope diagram from one pulley to another please. Appreciate it.
Thanks for the video! I want to do the same for my wood shed. I’m surprised there was not more videos like this on UA-cam.
Hey Brad Thanks for the ideal. I had a manual roll up in mind then I found your video and added your ideal to it.
Exactly what I needed! Thank you for showing!
Thanks for very useful video, Brad! Greetings from Norway!
Glad you did a demo. Nice job through each

Thank you.
Wow , you made the most helpful video yet ! Thank you 🙏
That's nifty. Gonna use this idea for sure
Thanks you. I made one today for my 16’ shed. Works great!
Awesome video. I made a roll up tarp for winterizing my central fla orchid green house, but i used the screw eye method. Thank you muchly.
Hi what is the screw eye method? Does it roll up too? Thanks
Hey Brad thanks for posting this! I used your idea on my barn that has 2- 10’x12’ doors. It was a great project for me and my son. Works great!!
Thank Tom. Glad the video was helpful.
Hi I love you idea is there any instructions or lay as to how to install it and where did you get the tarps
This is exactly what I needed for my project which is going to consist of six to close off my carport. Thx.
Glad I could be of help.
How would I do this on a metal building? Thanks! Great video though I'm still not sure how/why the tarp rolls & doesn't just bunch up.
Great design and video. Not sure if I'll do this because I have security concerns with mice and thieves!

I purchased the pulleys from Menards.
Good job, great idea
Where do you get a large canvas? Is it still in good shape? I know those silver tarps biodegrade pretty fast in our Texas sun and heat.
Thank you for the video, great idea! Could u pls explain how u made pipe rolling up and not just lifting? I don't think u use any spring in the setup to roll the tarp to the pipe, do u?
The pipe automatically roles the tarp up due to the outside string lifting up through the pulley.
Beautiful job
Wondering if the rope/cable causes any wear on the tarp itself. Was thinking of this idea for a wood shed enclosure at the lake. Awesome idea. Thx for sharing
Yes , it will wear the tarp . Maybe not so much for his tarp because its cloth tarp but a plastic tarp would need a track of gorilla tape
3 years with no wear on the tarp. But the tarp has shrunk a few inches.
Good job, simple and works .

Very clever design
Nice design!! What material is it?
Just a heavy canvas tarp
Heavy Canvas Tarp. I think I purchased at Coversandall.com. It was either from them or tarpsplus.com
Sorry, I actually purchased from mytarps.com for 78 dollars.
Nice Thanks.
So the abs pip is essentially jus rolling on top of the string?
Pulling the string pulls the inner string up through the pulleys. This action causes the pipe to roll and since it is attached to the tarp, the tarp rolls around the pipe. The tarp and pipe roll up between the two strings, not on top of it.
Where did you get the canvas?

What material is your tarpaulin made of?
Heavy canvas.
Which material tarp did you choose from my tarp?
I used the Heavy Duty Sigman Canvas Tarp.

Didnt show how you ran the rope around the tarp to get it to roll up.
