I started out T-hunting 50 years ago using my mobile antenna and turning the car in a circle, watching the 2nd limiter current on a Motorola FMTRU-41V boat anchor. Fun times! So K6ESS Ed would love to get back into Fox Hunting. Hope I win!!

Good intro to fox hunting Jason! I've designed a few foxes for our club in the SWVA area, and have had lots of fun. One thing to note is that, while Baofeng radios are OK for getting in the area, the operator will quickly learn the limits of the signal level indicator. I believe the signal strength indicator to be of utmost importance when getting close to the fox, along with the offset attenuator. I often bring a few FT-60s to our hunts so that new hunters can avoid the frustration. 73 de W4XXV!

Having an HT with an S-Meter like the FT-65 I would argue is crucial. Just going off audio can be extremely deceiving. The attenuator mentioned is superb and coupled with a take measure yagis is a great first kit

N4PKR. I was trained in direction finding "fox hunting" to look for downed airplanes or lost hikers. This was before I became a ham. I used those skills to find a Ham that was maliciously jamming repeaters. We found him... Sad to say it was the sitting club president, who wanted to run hams that he didnt like off the repeater.

There are ELT Emergency Locations Transmitter in some airplanes on121.5 MHz. There are groups like CAP that look for them! But with some changes in the frequency some of our radios can be made to find them. The military uses 243 MHz. There has been some changes to this with the GPS system in the ELT'S. But other than the frequency that is used most of it the some way of doing.

If you only had a cheap Baofeng and no attenuator, would it help to improvise the yagi so it picked up less and less signal the louder the fox signal gets? Basically de-tune the yagi as the signal increases so you only hear when the fox signal is the greatest. I have not been on a fox hunt but I have done very extensive metal detecting and when pin-pointing a target I notch the signal so it 'sounds' much quieter and only the loudest signal is heard.
