Europe is populated by the rubble and ruins of the Roman Empire. But if you want to get closer to the Roman way of life you have to come to Brazil. In "the last flower of Lazio, uncultivated and beautiful" (as a Brazilian poet said) authoritarianism, militarism, corruption, the rigid hierarchy of society, the existence of families that have commanded politics for centuries, daily violence, promiscuity between public and private, the greed of judges, contempt for the poor and the immense rural properties that function as a reserve of value and foundation of political power, all these Brazilian things are typically Roman things.

My ancestors lived within the Roman Empire since the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Americans are descendants of people whose Romanization process was incipient (the barbarian tribes that existed in Britain) or non-existent, such as those who invaded England in successive waves during the Dark Ages. This explains the immense social differences between Americans and Brazilians.

They didn’t alter the course of lives of anybody here and there. It is as if they hadn’t gone. Colombus did and the rest is history.
