The church organist played this at a funeral I went to recently, just at the end of the service. It was a sad, but beautiful moment and one I will remember forever.
Indiana University professor Diane Bish has captured the nuance of this Enigma variation, "Nimrod." Her registrations are magnificent and her tempo is perfect, once again underscoring her talent as one of America's, if not the world's leading organists
I am always in total awe of Miss Bish, not only as the consummate concert organist she is, but of her adaptability to different instruments. Every pipe organ console has its own arrangement of stops. Some are arranged across the top, some on panels on either side. Some are tabs, some are draw buttons, and some more contemporary organs look like the controls of a 747. And yet, she quickly makes them her own. She learns their character and soul. We are blessed to have her talent in our lives. Brava!
Nimrod from the Enigma Variations is already a beautiful piece. To hear it performed by Diane Bish on a large and powerful organ is absolutely soul striking. Glad you posted an HQ version of this vid.
Come on! Don't waste your time looking for errors in small things, put your headphones on, sit and enjoy! This is a great interpretation, Bish is the best in this instrument, no doubt!
Jordi Franch I have indeed listened to him. He is undoubtedly a brilliant performer. But there is something unsettling about him that I cannot quite identify. I end up feeling uneasy, despite the sheer brilliance of his playing.
NIMROD in my estimation has to go down as one of the greatest tunes of all time -that upward sense of the infinite -the remotest stars in the galaxy -truly wondrous!
Diane Bish mastery of the organ is breath-taking! My brain explodes when she plays Elgar's Nimrod on a powerful organ. She has always been my favorite organist.
Every time I hear "Nimrod", I reach toward the sky as though God is beckoning to me to come. Diane Bish playing Nimrod on this organ had my brain "exploding. Certainly, a divine experience.
So very evocative and ethereal...then, gradually, the great gates of Heaven open and we see our God and can glimpse Eternity here for a few moments...ah, Paradise, how marvelous! Thank you, Diane for this, my favorite among the many great things you play!
this is a beautiful rendition of nimrod. thank you for sharing. this piece is my favorite pieces. i fell in love the very first time i listened to it played by the orchestra about 20 years ago. from then it has been my all time favorite piece. brings tears of joy to my eyes every time i listen to it. i experience a touch of heaven. thanks to Sir Edward Elgar for such beautiful melodies
J. K. Oh JK, your soul must dance with joy from all the happiness it contains. You are one happy “Christian “ person and more folks will be led to your Savior because of the example your wonderful verbiage contains!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK in bringing the message of salvation to the great masses and remember, GOD WILL NOT BE MOCKED!!!!!!!! (You silly goose you). Oh, did I mention? God loves geese so he really must love you since you’re head goose!!!!!!!
J. K. You’re fun to “play” with quacker head but alas and alack my time with you is over! Go get some meds and make an appt. with your shrink. Remember, GOD WILL NOT BE MOCKED!!! Quack, quack, quack!!!!!!!
And yes, this is one of my own many favorites...played perfectly slowly this time(!) so to hear all of the nuances...and yes, I have heard you play this before there in Texas...
Lets not forget the late Marie-Claire Alain....the greatest one of them all. I saw her in recital in 2005 or so when she had to be assisted up the steps to the bench. When she started to play, 50 years came off her age. It was the first time I had ever heard the Widor toccata and it was magic.
Oh Diane..I cannot tell you HOW MUCH i love this music..and your playing of it lifts me towards Heaven...hope we can hear this Heaven one day...freda farr
My brother choose Nimrod for our Mum's funeral in 2018; the organ was in St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, England. One of the former organist there was conductor, the late Sir Malcolm Sargent.
Yet another wonderful performance form Ms Bish - this performance makes me really emotional! Absolutely love the chord at 4.20 with the 32' pedal added - it sound beautiful!
Thank you for the great works of Mrs Diane Bish, the name I first heard from an Indonesian organist I was supporting her concert, seminar, and master class in Jakarta - but chores took me away. Now, after Dieter left - having to learn also about Johannus plus still Rodgers of course - suddenly this beautiful name rings a bell. Diane, I could not hold my tears of musical happiness listening to all of your explanations on the pipe organs and your playing - even so this mysterious NIMROD. The Almighty GOD bless you, Diane. At least, you are driving me on to the "Back to Basic" music again. Thank you
Yes, I've seen the website too. They have giant screens covering most of the organ. I did see one picture that somebody took of a concert there where someone was sitting at the console. So hopefully it's used at least occasionally.
Diane Bish should visit Salisbury Cathedral (in the city of Salisbury in southern England) and play the organ there. The Salisbury Cathedral organ (which was built in 1877 by Henry Willis and Sons) is considered to be one of the finest organs in the United Kingdom!
One of my favorite pieces...well done. As for people mentioning looking at her feet...she uses a bunch of the toe pistons to help the decrescendo at the end. I look at the toe pistons also when I play because it's very easy to miss one or hit the wrong one.
Her legato is magnificent. There is no sostenuto pedal on the organ. You have to SUSTAIN the legato yourself. There are no magic rules. It's just VERY difficult and you have to PLAN your legato carefully and practice each key change separately. Not to mention the myriad of stops and cluster choices. Playing the organ is the DEFINITION of multi-tasking. It helps to have a brain that can be in 3 places at once. Diane probably can jump rope and play canasta at the same time. (I hope somebody laughs at my post). Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Diane Bish is one of my wonderful organists! I've watched those fingers simply slide from key to key....an it is NOT simple! The slower the melody, the more difficult is the playing...I took a few organ lessons...wish I had taken more! I do LOVE the organ.....all kinds....but I do get a real kick with all stops pulled!!!! LOL! Like to see things vibrate..
Never been a Bish fan. She's a fabulous organist there's no doubt about that, it's just her interpretation of a lot of major works that leaves a lot to be desired, but to be fair, I really enjoyed this.
Yes, that is a very extreme yet mature and brilliantly planned execution. Diane is such a well behaved little girl at the organ. I don't think they make as many people like that these days.
I am an Englishman. Thank you. Your hearts are wonderful.
a man lives a life to write just a few minutes of sublime music like this
Or woman, but i wholeheartedly agree
Like he wrote nothing else?
@@trevorcorso473 love all Elgar!
Beautifully put.
Hunter. Peale take your hate somewhere else hunter you halfwit

Indiana University professor? Is she teaching at Indiana University now? Just wondering...
Correction. Diane Bish is not currently on the Indiana University faculty. But I believe she still resides in Bloomington.

Have you listened to Cameron Carpenter?
Not actually, would you please send me a link?
Jordi Franch
I have indeed listened to him. He is undoubtedly a brilliant performer. But there is something unsettling about him that I cannot quite identify. I end up feeling uneasy, despite the sheer brilliance of his playing.
This really does bring a lump in one's throat. Brilliant!
I absolutely love this piece, and how it's played so majestically by Ms. Bish.
Me too!
Diane is certainly well capable of using those full resources !
The handling of suspensions, dissonance, and releases. plain and simple, this is music :) Thank you Ms. Bish for playing this piece!
Thank you Edward & Diane, truly amazing !
You were indeed commissioned by the Almighty to play the organ. Beautifully played Diane Bish.
Heard this at a remembrance festival during a segment where we remembered the fallen of all wars and it moved pretty much everyone to tears

The timing is perfect! Outstanding!
In the UK we always hear this piece round Remembrancetide, in November. I think it's a wonderfully emotive piece. 😭
Indeed and it will also be remembered as Winston Churchill's funeral accompaniment.
Superb seamless rendition. Excellent.
She is as much a pleasure to watch as she is to listen to.
Also, I love the music of Elgar,
Inspiring interpretation and performance, Ms Bish. From a Brit now in Toronto.
Happy to have you here.
Love Diane Bish! Glory to God for her amazing musical talent!!
This piece always moves me deep into my heart. It awakens my soul.
At 90, this piece played so beautifully is a cheer up message, triumphantly proclaiming that life is/has been worth living - superb!

BEAUTIFUL, I ADORE DIANE BISH'S MUSIC, WHAT A GOD GIVEN TALENT
Mystro Diane Bish I've been a fan of yours since the 80's @Coral Ridge. Thank God for the gift and talents he's entrusted you with.
What a great organ!! What a great organist! And, finally ...What a Great masterpiece of music for the ear, heart and soul! Thank you!
"Bish please!"
No offense :P
Love the enigma variations and her cover is beautiful.
Okay, I admit, I laughed. And she is an organist supreme, with talent to interpret the very moods that Elgar desired to convey.
BRAVO
Thank you for posting
One of the finest organists in the 20/21st century

Absolutely Magnificent! this is my 20th time listening to it...
This is simply excellent all-together, excellent instrument, played by an excellent, and talented, capable musician.
Americans tend to play English music too fast this was perfect, she is so deep into the music at one with the organ.

Diane Bish the best! I just love Nimrod by Edward Elgar Just beautiful, played by Diane Bish xx
Just brilliant. Others more eloquent than I have put it better but I’ve really never heard a more emotional rendering of this great work
My son loves Diane Bish. Wow this is beautiful xx
Very good, beautiful rendition with perfect tempo and good Climax
And yes, this is one of my own many favorites...played perfectly slowly this time(!) so to hear all of the nuances...and yes, I have heard you play this before there in Texas...
Truly without a doubt The King of Instruments handled beautifully by the Queen of the Instruments.
Dianne Bish has been a great ambassador for the organ world. The late Carlo Curley and the late Virgil Fox both were too.

I have been watching Ms. Bish play for years, what a gift she has to give. she surely was sent from above to soothe our souls......

Simply Stunning! Diane Bish, thank you for the gift of music! Kindly, Ed. Beato
The Joy of Music has placed Diane Bish in the forefront of great organists. This is yet another example of her fine artistry.

Beautiful! Perfect tempo.
Never heard this piece before. Love it!!!!!!!!!! And WOW is that organ BIG!!!!!!! Way to go Texas!
Love this song and how Diane plays it. Great sounding organ also. Thanks for your music to enlighten all of us.

Of all the arangements of this piece on YT, this is my favorite. She sure knows how to "open er up"!
Perfect interpretation. Thank you 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I have heard this sung by the folks of Voces8 (and other groups) as "Lux Aeterna"...Love both versions...
What a doll--and great musician.
Bravisimo señora Bish!!!
Have only just 'discovered' her. Her arrangements of pieces like Nimrod are wonderful, as are her interpretations of Bach.
This can be the only piece of music at my funeral. It says everythiing I would want to say about the life I've lived.
grandissima interprete, siamo su un altro pianeta.
Beautiful registrations, Ms Bish. Would love to hear it with the preceding Variation.
There has never been an organist as talented as Ms. Bish. Thank you for posting, All Glory, Laud, and Honor to Jesus Christ our King!
Very satisfying. interesting to see the stops slide in, as she works the pistons at the end!
Great skill, wonderful piece.
Sir!!!! Ms Not Edgar Elgar.
But never have I heard of this organist.

You gotta love those VHS tapes!!!!
Beautiful.
Gotta love that Texas big hair! I could just imagine Ann Richards (although I don't think Ann Richards ever played organ).
