So much to see at the big house, la casa grande. I was on the job in Westchester, 1965-1985. A few of the guys from my department would go to the quarters of 82/31, and I would stand in awe, watching these men do their job.
my uncle worked here for many years. engine 82. he passed due to cancer. but i remember going to work with him. the men were great and the fires plenty. thats why i became a firefighter.
The first part had Dennis Smith on the bagpipes. On top of being a firefighter/philosopher/writer, he was also a member of the Emerald Society pipes and drums in the 60's and 70's.
Now I understand why they call the mid-sixties to the end of the eighties: The War Years... You got to be brave and courageous to work in South Bronx...
FDNY start using SCBA's about 1970, but they were sparsely used and not all the companies had them, most not certainly in da Bronx. They were not widely use by FDNY until about 1975-1976.
They had them in compartments. First due engine and truck went in without them. Subsequent arriving companies would don the packs and relieve the first dues. The packs were heavy and bulky.

Both parts 1 and 2 are on my page. The quality is not the best, but the content is awesome.

It's amazing how different things were before SCBA . . . so much more hospitalization due to toxic smoke inhalation.
