  • When sisters Sugiyama Emi and Yumi moved from Japan to New York at a young age, they never imagined they’d be singers one day.
    From 1981 to 1995, they would grow up in a small area in New York called Heartsdale, located in the Yonkers suburb. In 1995, they would move back to Japan where the sisters would go to school. During that time, Emi and Yumi wanted to share their passion for American urban, hip-hop, and R&B with Japanese audiences.
    They would get their chance in 2001 on the popular TV show Asayan. After winning the competition, the girls would adopt the name Heartsdales, where they grew up. They would go under the stage names Jewels (Emi) and Rum (Yumi).
    For five years, they would have a solid career, working with the likes of m-flo, Double, and Hinouchi Emi. They had some serious bangers and looked posed to take over the Japanese urban and hip-hop scene.
    Until 2006…
    That year, the sisters would call it quits and go their own ways after Heartsdales. After their singing career, the two have lived relatively quiet lives.
    While they had a short career, they made an impact on the scene in the early to mid 2000s. Let’s relive the career of Heartsdales.

    It's sounds like they did and accomplished a lot in only a short amount of time and they definitely had that late 90s and early 2000s vibe about them

    After their breakup, as a teenager I tried reaching out to Jewels via email using the info she had on her business site... and she replied! haha Interestingly enough she said that she was working on new solo tracks in the urban genre, it's a shame they never saw the light of day.

      Oh wow, that's really cool! I wonder if Jewels ever misses singing. I wish she released her solo tracks, even if it was just on UA-cam or Spotify. I know that Rum (Emi) has a kid and moved back to New York since 2010-ish.

    I enjoyed this video and I enjoy J-Pop music since I was 12 years old :)

    Ohh one of the first Jpop songs I heard, Candypoppin - and then I discovered more via YT, like Soul'd Out, BoA (had no idea she was Korean), m-flo (had no idea Verbal was Korean), Koda Kumi, Amuro Namie, all those JRPG pop singers or the ones singing anime OPs and EDs like The Indigo, Ken Hirai.... good times ^^

      Oh wow, you're naming some of the great artists in the 2000s. I haven't heard of The Indigo and Ken Hirai in such a long time.
      There's a lot of artists in Japan that are actually Korean, so it's pretty cool to discover fun facts like that.

    the pros of Popsori being not very popular channel are the comment section is more peacefull and clean from spamming/swearing, and your comment has more chance to be read.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed 100%. About 6 months, I made the choice to do videos that the Popstars (Popsori fans) and I wanted to do. I didn't want to do just the popular "Twice/Blackpink/BTS" videos that I know would get a lot more views.
      While I took an 80% hit in views in my latest videos, I'm totally okay with that.
      Like you said, I'd rather have a clean and peaceful comment section. Any comments that resort to insults or don't even watch the video (and I get some of these still), I'd just ban from the channel. I'd rather attract smart K-pop fans than ones that just want gossip/news/filler content.

    Minor correction - they didn't grow up in Heartsdale. They grew up in Yonkers, which is a neighboring town to Heartsdale. And obviously a much worse name for a band.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому +2

      That's a good correction, thanks for that! I actually had Yonkers in my script, but I guess I didn't put that in the video.
      As for Yonkers, that would be a weird name for a group.

    • @meemp.2826
      @meemp.2826 3 роки тому +2

      I was looking at the description in particular when I wrote the comment. Yonkers might work for a punk band but definitely not an R&B/hip-hop group.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому +2

      @@meemp.2826 Ahh gotcha. Thanks again for the mistake; I'll fix the description now.
      As for Yonkers, I'd listen to a punk or even rock band with that name. But for R&B, Heartsdale just sounds so much better.

    I beg to disagree with them being the pioneers of Hip Hop in Japan. Mainstream yeah, but pioneers? No. Good video about Heartsdale tho but nothing you can’t search online.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 роки тому +5

      Oh, I tried looking up more info on them. In Japanese, no less, but there's little to no info on them after they disbanded. I really wish there was, as I wanted to make this video a lot longer.
      As for pioneers, wouldn't put them as the biggest pioneers, of course not. And mainstream, of course they were.
      But they, alongside many others, popularized American-styled urban and hip-hop music in Japan.
      In any case, I respect your opinion, as it's great to talk to others about Japanese music (whether you agree, disagree, or halfway agree).

I can thank M-Flo (back when L.O.T was at the top of my playlist) & that entire J-R&B/Pop era from late 90s - 00s for a lot of the styles I throw into producing nowadays. They were one of many influences ahead of their time as far as genres that were accepted overseas at that time. Always created the best of both worlds.
