126. A Major Faff at Furness Vale- Cruising from Marple to Bugsworth part 3

  • After going through the final bridge of the day, and with only a mile or so until
I reached Bugsworth Basin, it looked like being a quiet, drama-free cruise.
But alas, I had a very close brush with trouble at Furness Vale.
Let's just say this wasn't my finest moment, and it may be my stupidest.
And that is a pretty low bar.
Note- for those wanting to jump straight to the near-miss drama, the unpleasantness begins about 12 minutes in.

We all have good days and bad days. I love your honesty about showing us the days where we would all be thinking to ourselves. I should have just stayed in bed.

Thanks Mr C- I don't see the point in hiding mistakes to make myself look smarter or better.
The way I see it is this: if its not the real me on video, then what's the point of it?
I'll never make money or become well known from these videos, it is just for interest and for fun- and I do it as much for myself as for anyone else.
Also, its possible that inexperienced boaters might see my mistakes and avoid doing it themselves.

Our first time visiting Bugsworth basin today, what a beautiful part of the world. I think we walked past you and your boat as we were on foot walking from Whaley to the Basin and back. We had a cuppa at the narrowboat cafe and a drink later at the Navigation Inn 😁

Thanks for your comment Wayne, and yes I have to agree, Whaley is really nice, but Bugsworth basin is a fantastic place to moor a boat for a while, it really is.

Kudos to you for leaving in the near miss. You didn't hit the boat and there happened to be a passer by to help so all ended well. Those shelves are a flippin' nuisance aren't they!

Thanks very much once again for your kind comment Ms B.
As I explained to Mr C below, I want to look back in future and see the real me in these videos, and not a sanitised version with the mistakes and the ugly side of things removed.
And yes- those bloody shelves are a right nuisance (my language was rather stronger at the time though).

That was hilarious 😂... sorry but that is probably the same thing that I would do... 😂... I do hope we don't meet on a thin stretch of the Canal, it would be carnage lol.. did you end up with mud on your knees lol

I ended up with more mud on my knees! There was already a fair bit of mud on them, to be honest.
I think if the CRT start watching my videos they might revoke my license on the grounds of insanity. But if we ever do meet on a narrow stretch, I will of course give way as I normally do, and then moan about what a selfish git you were on the next video!

I must say AB, that did look like a bit of a dreary stretch of canal or was it just the weather?

It's a nice stretch Mr Z to be fair, I think it was maybe the very grey and dismal weather we get so often in winter that gave it a less appealing visual aspect. This is one reason why not many marina-based boaters go cruising in winter!

Cheers Arnold, do give me a shout, I'll probably still be there for the weekend. Problem is I need to move before Tuesday, and my cruising buddies are keen to make more progress.
But fingers crossed I'll be there, and if you're up for a beer we can maybe call in at the Navigation, its a cracking pub.

Hi Arnold, just wanted to let you know I'm still at Whaley Bridge- the ice is melting but slowly, and I dont want to annoy all the moored boaters by moving to buggy today, so I'll be there tomorrow instead.

My boats moored at Furness Vale so as it was frozen over I didnt make it to Buggy Bason. Hopefully catch up in the future@@theamateurboater5892
