WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED! Apopka-Beauclair Canal Boat Accident at MLF Toyota Series Harris Chain

  • Heres the real story of what happened on the Apopka Beauclair Canal during Day One of the Major League Fishing Toyota Series on Harris Chain! Locked thru with these guys, boater one in the front was Doug Reed and boater two that hit him is Mark Succi, from Lake Apopka that afternoon and were going to be late for way in. They decided to run the no wake zones and crashed into each other at the bridge almost seriously injuring someone or even worst death! Please there is no reason to kill or hurt yourself over fish, follow all the laws of the water at all times especially during a tournament and responsible for another persons life. Luckily everyone was okay and able to walk away alive!

I don't care how much money is on the line or how big of a bag I have in my live well, I WILL NOT be putting my life or anyone else's life in danger. Both of these guys need to be permanently banned from fishing any MLF tournament. Major respect for you Eric for not running it with those guys.

They sat and talked about running through a no wake zone knowing it is against the law and rules. Then proceeded to not only run through it but ran in a dangerous area. Because of the egregious nature of that I think they should not only be DQed I think they should be banned from fishing that series ever again. Thats not the kind of people we should have promoting our sport.

Honestly he probably should’ve claimed his Darwin Award that day, we’re all being punished by him still being a danger to everyone on whatever body of water he’s on currently. I already know how he drives his truck if this is how he behaves on the water.

Eric me and you have fished against each other and with each other, brother I’m so glad he went in front of you and it wasn’t you in that mess. There’s a time and place where we can run our high performance boats and in a canal isn’t one of them especially the AB canal. People like this is why real tournament professionals get a bad rap and judged on others stupidity. I’m glad you posted this clip to show what really transpired and I agree with others on what needs to happen. When you take others lives and put them in danger over a bag of fish or being late to weigh in and you have no regards for their safety you don’t need to be behind the wheel of a performance boat competing in tournaments. I really think they need to be removed from operating a boat in competition. Glad your good brother!!!! Keep swinging 👊🏻👊🏻

I've been thru that canal several times. There's ZERO places that are safe for a boat to run at those speeds. Those guys put more than just themselves in danger, but innocent people that had nothing to do with that tournament were in harms way too. Ridiculous, immature, reckless act over a few green fish. They should be banned for a long, long time.

#1 Boat (grey spots) was ahead of Boat #2 (blue spots) while they sat in the locks. Boat #1 went to neutral just before the bridge, by the time Boat #2 saw that, it was too late even pulling back to neutral and climbed on top of Boat #1. It's a driver choice of slowing to get through the bridge arches or getting through with speed. Both had to be violating the no wake law to get there together. Boat #2 will most likely get more tickets for failure to avoid (following too close or failure to turn). Both definitely broke the no wake law.

Poor time management in a fishing tournament is not an excuse to jeopardize lives. Thank God no one was seriously harmed or killed. No amount of money or fish is worth it. When we lived in Arkansas many years ago, the local bass club had weekly tournaments on a big reservoir. Many of those club members would run wide open at night with their nav lights off so no one would see their secret spot or see them putting in their secret brush piles. One night, one of those bass boats running at ~50MPH with nav lights off t-boned a pontoon boat with a large group of retired elderly locals just looking at the lights along the lake going slow with their nav lights ON. There were a number of deaths, I think 6 or 8. It was devastating, tragic and entirely negligent.

I've got a place on a lake that is 700 yards wide at my point, not far from the park and camp that a lot of tournaments launch from. I could have fifty boats blasting past at 6 am, or 5 pm. At first, I didn't mind the sound of all the motors with their tacks pegged. However, after a couple decades, it is getting old. I've been out in a kayak a couple times, to do my own fishing, and I have to watch for any bass boat screaming through my area. Most of the time, there is no issue, because there is plenty of room. However, all it takes is one not paying attention, and I'm in trouble. I try to make sure I get the attention of any boats in my area. Once I know they have seen me, we're good. One thing I am sick of is all the dead fish left behind after tournaments. The ones that they threw away, because they weren't the weight they wanted. Lots of dead fish all over the place after one of these. No Eagle Scouts in that bunch.

What I will say is I am so proud to say I know you and have fished against you for many years and you 110% did the right thing and made the right call from the start of this terrible unnecessary situation. I can only hope that both of the other coanglers had opportunity to voice their objections to the idea of running no wake zones as it would be their responsibility to do so as well. I appreciate you posting this video. This type of behavior is nothing new on the Harris Chain. I know that all the tournament anglers aren't this reckless and inconsiderate. With that said, as a local resident who has been fishing and boating on this chain for 45 years I'm surprised we haven't had more incidents. I have experienced several close calls over the years while fishing in Hanes Creek and most of them involved bass boats. (There was a similar incident there last week as well) The number of tournaments has increased exponentially over the last several years and the rude behavior that I have witnessed by tournament fisherman is inexcusable. I have had boats pull up and spot lock within casting distance of my boat and when I called them on it the reply was "we're fishing the biggest tournament of our lives, we fished here all week. This is our spot" I understand that most tournament fisherman are sportsman and obey the rules but the chain has become so saturated that it's difficult to enjoy the resource during the spring. The Harris Chain is a public waterway that everyone should be able to enjoy. I also understand the economic impact that tournament fishing has on the local economy. With that said, as someone who lives and votes here our patience is wearing thin. I'm happy to see that MLF has been quick to take action but in my opinion a lifetime ban would be more appropriate. I hope that this serves as a wakeup call for all of the tournament directors and competitors alike. There's no doubt that money is the driving factor that keeps these tournaments going. The revenue generated is enough to keep everyone "looking the other way" in regards to the negative impact that these tournaments have on overall safety on the waterway and the fishery as a whole. I just hope a more serious incident doesn't occur before everyone comes to their senses.

Had something similar happen 30 years ago during a Canadian fly in fishing trip
We stayed at the fishing outfitters main cabin located on his largest lake and was the base of his operations
Main Lake was very very big
There were many many other lakes connected to the main lake by creeks that saw much less pressure and had better to much better fishing VS the big main lake
One situation was a series of several different lakes all connected by a narrow water way well over 2 miles long we decided to try those lakes and we had planned this (four of us two boats two in each boat 16' Lowes deep V's) there were several well shelterd camp sights on these lakes and we planned on settling up on one and fish the lakes this creek access was also over 5 miles from the main cabin
We had discussed this plan with the owner of the outfitting business long before we got there he gave us good topo maps of the lake and set us up very nicely he did tell us two things
1st those lakes hadn't been fished in several years due to low water levels made the creeks impassable by boats and even now were barely deep enough to get a boat through and said we would likely have to row long stretches but we should get through
2nd he caution us VERY strongly when we are in areas of the creek that seam deep enough to use the motor about using the outboard motors any faster than slow as possible because there are many big bolders everywhere the creek and asked told us not to use the motors untill out of the creeks well into the lakes because if we knock the motor out of commission it will be a very very very long row back to the main cabin we assured him we would do do as he advised and not use the motors unless sure it was safe
We hot into the first creek off the main lake and just as the owner said the creek was very narrow maybe 30' wide and so shallow using the motor was impossible and we had to avoid many bolders we would otherwise have hit with the bow of the boat we had one guy in the front directing how the other guy rowed and the 2nd boat fallowed the 1st one we got to a wider deep section when a second boat caught up to us that was using thier motor but they did have it tilted to run as shallow as possible wasn't long before they became impatient and asked us to move to the side so thay could pass us I said no problem but I wouldn't be using your motor here if I were you as your likely to at least snap a shere pin for the prop or ruin the prop all together guys responce less than polite so we moved to the side and off they went
About an hour later and we could now see the new lake we saw the guys with thier boat pulled up on the creek bank had the 9.9hp Evinrude motor off the transom on the center seat working on it my buddy said he saw the prop was off
The one guy asked if we had a spare prop or shear pins and although I had both I said Ill give you a couple of shear pins but sorry I cant give you a prop as we only had one
We gave them two shear pins and kept going as I wasn't about to loose a full day of fishing because someone didn't heed both mines and the resort owners advice towing these guys back to the main cabin.
We found out later they had indeed ruined the motors lower unit.

Premeditated. Listen to him in the lock telling the other anglers that he is going to blow through the marked 5mph zones to "make up time". Also talks about sheriff patrol boat being in the area and basically not giving a shit. A recipe for disaster. Thank God some kid in a small boat or kayak fishing that canal didn't get killed by these self centered douchebags.

I am a local recreational fisherman. I fish the AB canal quite a bit. Its not easy trying to fish during these tournaments. I have had my fair share of some of these guys blasting past me in this canal....which is not wide at all. Those guys are "lucky" they ran into each other and not someone swimming 50 yards ahead of where they're at. Just ahead is a single boat ramp and a kids playground where sometimes people swim....they could have killed someone. Glad everyone's ok.

In their defense, it’s probably the only piece of gear on their boats they can operate safely…. If you’re shameless, and lazy enough to use FFS, then who gives a f^^k about a no-wake zone. That’s the problem with being an entitled, lazy, co-dependent, loser….it doesn’t just stop at catching a fish. See how that works?

I'm not trying to disrespect all bass fishermen, as I used to chase after them, but the most disrespectful and dangerous boaters that I see on the water are bass fishermen and jet skiers. Both groups seem to be oblivious to their surroundings. I know that doesn't apply to all bass fishermen, but it does for a lot of them. While fishing for cats from my boat and from the bank, I've encountered safe and respectful bass fisherman, but the bad ones seem to always be out in force.
