My vanilla finally flowered this year. I hand pollinated and I've got 6 beans growing. It's fun and simple to pollinate, just gotta check every day once you see blooms. You'll love it. Aloha
I have to say it’s pretty cool how you garden compared to me & the rest of the world, it looks like your holding a fish and just let it go into the ocean without much fuss or trouble at all, so natural 👍
I couldn't figure which way was up and which way was down in my cutting! I have a bunch growing all over my trees and started to crawl on my cinderblock wall (Hawaii). I bought a variegated cutting at a plant show and couldn't figure out the orientation by the leaves, not even on my established vines, but your comment makes sense (cup is up). Mahalo (thanks)!
Watching from the island of Roatan, Honduras and need to plant my vanilla bean that I have received from a generous local gardener. Thanks for the info, hope your vanilla took
This is what I wanted to do on a property in Australia. It was going to cost me $50 a plant though. I had a 5 acre patch of dirt to drop in posts every metre to grow the plants on. Sadly, it never happened. Dried Vanilla bean was worth around $200 an ounce back then. I was told the plants took around 4 years to flower and produce seed pods.
That was what I wanted to do when I move up north. But I can’t move cos I have family keeping me in Victoria. I just have to settle for one vine inside the house next to the lounge window. Going to make some more out of cuttings soon to go on all the other windows.
Nice looking climber! I'd like to try one of those. The wife had me buy a vanilla bean for a recipe. 1 bean in a jar, ten bucks. If this works out for you, you'll become the Vanilla tycoon of Parador...white linen suits to match the hat, peon's scurrying from compost heap to pumpkin patch..."por favor Dah-beed, no more ants!!"
Also, yes, I could make out the high pitch clicking sounds from those ants. Yes, they do indeed have stingers. Some ants also have formic acid channels in their mandibles so they can acid-burn you as they bite *and* sting you.
Vanilla is about $450 / kilo. Going to corner the market with those plants in a few years? I really don't understand why more people aren't growing them in the S.E. in greenhouses.
SPQRCincinnatus yes the commercial farms on Tahiti n Madagascar don't have the bug that pollinates Vanilla Orchids. The bug is only found in Mexico and I assume Central America.. they are not even in Florida 😢
I can't find anything on them either. Would love to nail down the species. They seem to have a sting instead of just a bite and live in decaying organic matter and fallen leaves.
David The Good lol...i think that is the same reasoning the ants have. I heard that they are highly intelligent creatures. just work with them the best you can. I know that you are a good man and you love nature still. and I love your songs too, you maybe could make a demo or a album, a compilation, something to put on I tunes or somewhere so you could make a little more money from them. someone will buy it, I know I would
It's been 5 years since you posted this video. How are the vanilla beans doing? What have you learned since then? I'm in west-central Florida, zone 9b, will my little vine (still inside) survive outside?

That is awesome! Thank you, Josh.
Vanilla, cocoa, coffee... It's like you're trying to grow a fancy mocha latte like creation. I can dig it.
Hey, good!
Blessings,
We had a farm in Hawaii. The diatomaceus earth will kill those ants. You did a good job with the vanilla plants.

"I do care I do". There you go .......good luck! 😄👍🏼😁😂
Going to have to track down this orchid and add it to the garden. Always learning so much from you! Thank you!
You bet - thank you.
Watching from the island of Roatan, Honduras and need to plant my vanilla bean that I have received from a generous local gardener. Thanks for the info, hope your vanilla took
I have always wanted to grow vanilla, now watching how it's done l will try to see where I can get some here in Puerto Rico. Good luck.😃
Do it!
If you find some let me know! Im also in PR 😀
I’d love to know how your vanilla vines are doing as I’m about to plant a few of my own.
The citrus with vanilla could maybe become a dreamsicle
You must do an update video on your vanilla!
I will.

$50 a plant! Whoa. Fortunately, if you get one you can later take lots of cuttings.
That was what I wanted to do when I move up north. But I can’t move cos I have family keeping me in Victoria. I just have to settle for one vine inside the house next to the lounge window. Going to make some more out of cuttings soon to go on all the other windows.
Ummmm! Cocoa and Vanilla!! YUUUMMMM!
Just got two cuttings. Praying I don't kill them here in the windy, tropical, treeless desert where I live.

Yes!
Do you have an update on vanilla growth? Hope it did well in your garden!
I would also like an update please 🙏
Thank goodness for UA-cam university!
Yes indeed.
I always wanted to try growing Leptotes bicolor which is reported to be a vanilla substitute in Paraguay. Theoretically easier than vanilla.
I can't wait until I'm able to add vanilla to my food forests. Unfortunately my trees are too small.
Soon, soon!
Thanks a ton. Just got a vanilla vine today and feeling very intimidated, but watching you do this makes me feel better about getting started. Cheers!
you have a new hat. GREAT!
Hope u will have plenty of vanilla soon. Long time no see Racheal, wish she & baby are doing great. 😍
Thank you.
@@davidthegooddo these produce the vanilla bean?
I'm SOOOOOOO jealous!
Really like hearing the animals in your videos honey🎈
They're ubiquitous. Neighbor has a flock of sheep and a few cows, always tied up somewhere nearby.
Hi David!! Would you like come to my country..
A lot of Vanilli here.
The ants just want to compost you.
I think you're right.
Oh this reminds me, how are the orchids and air plants you mounted to trees doing?
yea, the pineapple you strapped to the tree huh?
They're doing great so far.
I wish to one day live a life of abundances like David The Good
Always good❣❣❣
I think they leave both sides up so they don't accidentally bury the wrong side.
The Horn of Gondor at 10:46.

Ants are incredible.
Do you have any updates on these vanilla?
Brother I want to this farm in Nepal also.but still this farm is not started in Nepal.so how can I start this in Nepal.
Vanilla is about $450 / kilo. Going to corner the market with those plants in a few years? I really don't understand why more people aren't growing them in the S.E. in greenhouses.
Maybe so. It's a great crop. Pain in the neck to process, though.
SPQRCincinnatus pollination I believe
A large portion, if not majority, is pollinated by hand.
SPQRCincinnatus yes the commercial farms on Tahiti n Madagascar don't have the bug that pollinates Vanilla Orchids.
The bug is only found in Mexico and I assume Central America.. they are not even in Florida 😢
Hi, where is this place located?
have you ever had ants with their eggs in your compost I have some in mine just wondering if it's normal.
Oh yes. They help break it down.
I almost bought a vanilla plant, but then chickened out because of the problems with getting it to produce beans.
Just go for it next time - the worst that can happen is failure!
How long this vanilla can grow after you planting?
About two years.
Wow.so after two year the vanilla flower will be come out right.
Right.
@@davidthegood
Hi Dave from what i have heard its more like five years from watching a lot of other YT VIDS.
do you sell place I'm want grow in Oregon State cane I'm grow out filed
Is it from seeds?
No, grown from cuttings.
@@davidthegood
Hello mate. Can you grow a vine from shop bought vanilla pods do you know ? ..thanks.
91 like and no dislike
Are there poisonous snakes where you live?
I haven't seen any yet.
Now you just need to plant a vodka plant to make you some extract
Ah, yes. Solanum tuberosum, the Vodka plant
That was awesome, Michael.
Very Nice! However, you will also need a Vetus Russian Dudus to complete the recipe
Lol "good luck". I felt sad for that vanilla plant
Heh.
Couldn't find info on Tut Tut ants or tuk tuk ants...
I can't find anything on them either. Would love to nail down the species. They seem to have a sting instead of just a bite and live in decaying organic matter and fallen leaves.
Well they must be cousins of those annoying fire ants that seem to behave the same
would you try to kill someone if they break in your house and beat up your kids?
Try? No, I wouldn't even try. I'd kill them. Then kill them again to make sure.
David The Good lol...i think that is the same reasoning the ants have. I heard that they are highly intelligent creatures. just work with them the best you can. Link to an update please?
We moved - had to leave the vanilla behind.
That’s what I was looking for too...the update
want a money crop? grow Saphiron!
Saffron?

We moved over 1,000 miles away, unfortunately, so I have no updates.
Mine were eaten by rats
how is your lovely wife doing/
She is doing quite well, thank you.
I watched this in the nude. Just thought you should know.
Excellent choice.
