On December 24, 1914, an unofficial Christmas Truce was enforced on the Western Front. An act of trust and harmony, British and German soldiers mingled and played games together in the midst of one of the most atrocious events of the 20th century - World War I. Yes, and I wish this truce would replicate in the tragic Russo Ukrainian war. That would have been a fantastic Christmas 🎁 to the soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Remember that most of the soldiers do not want to fight this war, but are forced to battle. These poor souls r forced to crawl in the freezing cold and without food because their masters sent them. I'm having Christmas dinner with my family and relatives while the soldiers risk death at the same time. Life isn't always very fair! Merry Christmas !🎄🎁🎅
Tis the season again, friends. The 110th anniversary of the Christmas Truce draws close. Let us remember those heroic men, and the humanity that prevailed that day.
There is a plenty of metal Christmas song or at least covers out there Christopher Lee even made some covers of Christmas songs with his band before he passed my he rest in peace
I'm stealing that, it's hilarious. Interesting enough, as the others have said, in both World Wars, notably more countries were on the Allied powers than the Central/Axis powers. WW1; Allies; Britain (which at the time included Austalia), USA, Italy, France, Serbia and Russia Central powers; Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, the Ottoman empire. WW2; Allies; USA (E-fucking-ventually), Britain (again with Australia), France, Russia (who joined six months before America) and China. Axis; Germany, Italy, Japan.
@@Lord_Numpty There's several other powers that signed on the Axis side. Romania and Bulgaria both their armies involved in the invasion of the Soviet Union. Indeed, the operation that turned the tide in Stalingrad (Operation Uranus - the encirclement of German forces in Stalingrad) involved cutting through the Romanian Third and Fourth armies, which were guarding the Germans' flank. Finland was also an ally of Germany in what they called the Continuation War, but unlike Romania and Bulgaria, they weren't ultranationalist nutjobs like the Nazis, they just wanted to reclaim territory lost to the Soviets in the Winter War of 1939. And if you start including minor international powers rather than the ones on the front lines in Europe (and the Pacific in WWII) you get multiple representatives on every continent (except Antarctica, due to the lack of countries) picking sides. Canada, Brazil, Peru, the fighting in Africa (mostly because they were colonies and getting dragged into the war by their European overlords)...a full list of belligerants for either war is *very* long.
I can not believe Sabaton traveled back in time just to record a music video! This has been a very beautiful tribute to one of the most human episodes among the craziness of War. Mycket bra!
@@valenrn8657 Same, but from Gen X. War sucks. But the poor bastards that didn't see any choice other than to fight it should never be forgotten. Nor should the scars left on their families, even beyond their lifespan.
On a superficial level, Sabaton might look like a warmongering band, with their military style and songs about wars. But once you start digging into their lyrics, it becomes obvious that they mean something else. My favourite anti-war songs are Cliffs of Gallipoli and A Lifetime of War / En Livstid i Krig
Every Christmas during school, my German teacher would always tell the story of the Christmas truce of 1914. He would tell the story of the events somberly and proceed to sing silent night in German then English. Thank you Sabaton for making this and forever treasuring this memory. The song is just perfect!
My German teacher that was in the Africa Corp told me of the same story. Brothers in arms celebrated together, and the next day they all shot over each others head. They all realised that no body wanted to be there and that they had more income with each other than divided them. It is politicians that pit us against one another.
-my grandfather told me once, when he was on france defending a city, on that day of 24th there was a cease fire of 3 days, 3 days both sides smile, eat and play togheter, 2 weeks later the enemy fall back for a reason: they could not shoot their new friends... Thanks Sabaton, let us all remenber this truce and those who die for that day
This shows how devastating war is for a human. My family used to watch over a 96 year old man-who has sadly passed away now-and he would tell stories about WW2 every now and then. He mentioned the Chrismas truce once or twice, every time he did I would just cry like a baby. May him and all soldiers rest in peace
The Christmas Truce: one of the most uplifting stories in a war full of misery, but then also one of the most heartbreaking gut-punches when you remember these men had to resume fighting as soon as that day was done.
@@mcklub Yes, especially since commanders specifically ordered attacks and artillery barrages before Christmas to make sure both sides hated each others enough. And I guess by 1915 average soldier had too many dead friends and relatives to even want to try it
@@guerney2000 There still were cases of soldiers fraternizing going on, or at least attempting to, sides developing "live and let live" policy, agreeing not to attack during morning washing times and such. SOldiers simply trying to make their own situations slightly more bearable. Because let's be honest, a grunt at the front line doesn't give a damn what some high-ranking medal-sporting prick miles and miles away from the front lines, sitting comfortably in their officer quarters, enjoying warm meals... a front line grunt doesn't care what such brass "wants" A soldier in ww1 wants to survive.
As long as it is the mere calling of men to be men... in prevention of falling into a decline of socialism/communism.... we good. God bless you Granny ;)
None of us are truly enemies of each other. personal pride, petty excuses and child-like antics of politicians and people of influence are the cause of all of it. In the end we put aside all of that and attain Men of Real honor, Real love for family and Real understanding of what all of these things can cause only then can war truly be brought to an end
it makes me shed tears too, I believe we are all brothers and sisters on this earth. We do not need to fight each other ever regardless of what our politicians and world leaders tell us
its a moment that shows everything good with humanity a brief beam of light to keep up hope for our species that good is still outthere in us even if the grimness and violence of reality trys to push us to cynism and depresison
110 years ago to the day, men who were once sworn enemies celebrated a day of joy together, and found out they weren’t so different after all. Here’s to hoping that, all those years later, people of all different cultures and beliefs can truly realize that We Are All Friends.
Just used this song to teach my 7 yo daughter that an enemy in war is not necessarily a bad person but a human being. On the 1st of november we allways visit Henri-Chapelle War Cemetery and visit an unknown soldier. Now she starts to realize the madness ... I'm so glad she 's allready a fan of Sabaton (especially of Hannes) and I can use the music we love to teach her things that matter in life ... thanks Sabaton
Once she gets old, she will share your wisdom and the things that you teach, to his son or her daughter, and may the things that you said to her will be sent to more and more generations
This...made my day. If hope springs eternal, then where there is darkness, that darkness can never win as long as there is but a glimmer of light that exists. If that light exists, then hope exists, and it shall never fade. You, sir, give me hope that future generations will never forget the sacrifices and stories of the men who have fought, and given, so much. Sacrificed so much. If for no other reason, than to give the future a chance to shine so much brighter than it did in their day. Bless you, and especially your little one, these holidays in 2021. May they find you well, and find you safe.
This song needs to be number one worldwide for Christmas as a reminder that even during one of the most horrific conflicts in recent history that moments of humanity still existed. Especially in a world of social media where it feels like people strive to divide rather than unite
ironically' though we are not shooting each other, there is less in common between the sides now than there were during ww1 the cultures were basicly exactly the same but with different languages. We no longer can agree on basic morality.
Because when we see the video and hear the music it hits us hard as we no all the pain and suffering that went through and it hits us hard and then we think of what’s going on today 😢😢 it’s a shame that we all can’t live together in peace the world bigger enough
@Vergil749 correct. Seeing so many ppl I know that raise their voice for every injustice be quiet on this. Knowing thr US is funding it. And seeing the atrocities from Motaz and others every day.
The Christmas Truce was a series of unofficial ceasefires that took place only 5 months after the war had begun. Gaps in the fighting took place as materiel supplies ran low and commanders began to reconsider their plans following the stalemates at Marne and Ypres. Pope Benedict XV had suggested a temporary ceasefire for the celebration of Christmas, but the warring countries refused to commit to any official ceasefire. The Open Christmas Letter was also sent around this time, being an open letter signed by a group of over 100 British suffragists at then end of 1914 as the First Christmas of the Great War approached. The letter was written in acknowledgement of the horror of war and as a direct response to letters written to the president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance by a small group of German Suffragists that also had called for peace. The week before Christmas soldiers from the German side of the trenches began to sing carols, play in brass bands, and eventually, on the dawn of Christmas Day, some German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines. Calling out "Merry Christmas" In their enemies' native tongues. Initially the allies feared it was a trick, and in some sections of the trenches the allied lines simply fired upon those wishing for peace, quickly ending the momentary ceasefire. In most areas, particularly lines that weren't British (If I'm recalling it correctly) The allied soldiers held their fire upon realizing that the moment was not an attempt at subterfuge and soon came to meet their momentary friends in the middle of No-Man's Land. They exchanged gifts of tobacco, pudding, buttons, helmets, and even chocolate as they sang carols and even had some German Soldiers light Christmas trees around their trenches and played games. Not every part of the trenches was as good natured, some simply agreed to momentary ceasefires at a distance, permitting their opponents to rest and relax in their own trenches, exchange prisoners with one another, or set about the grim task of recovering the dead from No Man's Land. Unfortunately, in the subsequent years the commanding officers on both sides had issued strongly worded orders against such fraternization, and come the Christmas of 1915, when British soldiers heard carols coming from the trenches on the other side, artillery was directed to fire upon the position the sound came from, putting a stop to any future Christmas Ceasefires.
This has to be the most production I've ever seen on a music video, and it absolutely delivers. Cannot wait for this album and to see what they come up with after this one. These guys are the MASTERS of storytelling in music, and I love this band so damn much.
No joke, this brought tears to my eyes. The fact that the soldiers, who were just brutally and mercilessly killing each other the previous night, would not fire upon each other because it was Christmas is the most wholesome thing ever and the most tragic. Because the next morning they would all resume the war as if they weren't friends for that one, short moment.
Putting the actual Truce aside, I love, truly love how Sabaton never takes sides. They tell a story and play good music, they don't choose one or the other. I cherish Sabaton so much for doing something most bands can't, teaching history while providing good music. I've learned more from Sabaton's songs and Sabaton history than I have in a long time.
"They never pick a side", then they make a song named 'The rise of Evil', they make a song celebrating war criminal Witold Pilecki, they call Saddam insect of terror while repeating data proven fake that was used to justify the II Gulf War, they literally tell every battle from the pov of one single side and it all perfectly aligns with Western narrative.
@regi grenski I'd say that there's a large difference between the evils of men like Hitler and most common soldiers, even though they were enabling and perpetuating his evil. On the other hand, WW1 was terrible, and both sides did kill quite a few civilians (though Russia and the Ottomans take the prize). However, today we don't think of it as death camps, slavery, and fascism. Because it wasn't about that, and was not the goal. My personal takeaway is that WW2 is remembered more for the cartoon insane level of villainy than anything else. The death toll was massive, but that's not going to be the first thing we think of when it comes to that war.
@@apollo1694 No, they don't. Sabaton making a song that focuses on one side or one person doesn't mean they are taking sides. They TEACH HISTORY via their songs. Y'all need to use your brains.
Imagine a world where the Christmas Truce was the end of the war. Not because the powers that be declared an end, but because all of the soldiers on both sides collectively refused to fight anymore.
Yes, that's what we want. What if people listened to Christmas Truce and Tommy's A Christmas Carol, with the Dickens story advising us all to live everyday as if it is Christmas, to keep Christmas in our hearts every day of the year.
110 years ago, something unthinkable happened, the soldiers of the two sides stopped the carnage to celebrate Christmas together, something that had never happened before.Let's not let this moment be forgotten
Here in India, in our 8th Grade English textbook, our first chapter is actually a story about the Christmas Truce! I don't know if any of my friends remember it, but reading it always touched my heart. I loved it, though I ultimately didn't look much into it, thinking it was another one of those too-good-to-be-true stories. I thought that, till I saw this video. And realized it actually happened. I've been crying for an hour now. But I'm happy. Thank you, Sabaton! From the bottom of my heart, I thank you!
It might be difficult to find a copy of it in India, but I would love to recommend a movie about this event to you: “Joyeaux Noël”. It does a very good job of depicting the Christmas Truce from the point of view of the British, French and Germans, and is also one of the most emotional movies I’ve ever seen.
Hello, Hex. It is too good to be true...and yet it's true anyway.. If you study history closely, somehow during our darkest hours, humanity finds a way to shine through regardless.
If I remember correctly some of the Indian troops held a seize fire for German troops on the western front so they could celebrated Christmas. While they didn’t celebrate with them it was honorable
One of the things I love about Sabaton, listening to their music does 2 things to me. 1:puts a fire in my blood and motivates me to finish whatever it is I start 2: pulls on my heartstrings with their lyrics until a lump is in my throat and a tear in my eyes. If you guys are reading this, you're awesome. Please don't stop putting out your music.
@@Sabaton on the contrary, you guys continue to inspire me. It's your music that helps me fight on through my toughest of work days. I don't think I could ever thank you enough for that.
@@SabatonWatching your “Christmas Truce” has become a Christmas tradition for me. I’m featuring it in one of my stories, too! I hope you don’t mind that
Tis 19 days till Christmas, and I make my yearly trek (if you can call searching for a video on youtube a trek, but shut up, it's my narrative) to the Christmas Truce by Sabaton, to be reminded that no matter how bleak the world is, no matter how painful or frustrating life can be, a moment happened one hundred and ten years ago upon Christmas eve where the soldiers decided to put aside differences for a night, joining hands, singing, playing games with those who were, hours before, their mortal enemies. This event deserves to be remembered for all time, I firmly believe, and I'm still grateful to Sabaton for performing this song; it's become one of my absolute favorites, and I don't listen to it except for around December--I think the song's special and deserves to be saved for the time it needs to be remembered most. I won't judge anyone who feels differently to me on this--I listened to this song for the first time in June of last year, and fell in love with it instantly; it genuinely moved me to tears. Thanks, Sabaton, and I'm including Joakim, Pär, Tommy, Hannes, Chris, as well as all the audio engineers and the choir as well as all the actors and people who made this video happen. Thank you guys for this amazing song; I'm a lifelong fan of yours, no matter where you guys go with this. Cheers! (Also, yes, I am aware it was actually three days, but in my defense, uh... I was too lazy to look it up! Bye!)
Love how "Carol of the Bells" was incorporated in the piano and the song revolves around it. It's a perfectly melancholy yet joyous song. Sabaton has created yet another masterpiece.
Carol of the Bells" is a popular Christmas carol, with music by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914[1] and lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant "Shchedryk".His plans to leave the country, along with the fact that he was killed by a Soviet agent, also indicate political reasons for his death
We must NEVER forget this song. Not only does it show that there can be humanity in war, but it shows that the soldiers on the front aren't fighting each other, but fighting because their higher powers told them to. This is such a beautiful song that tells such a powerful story. Excellent job Sabaton!
The very traditional sounds of the holidays combined with fascinating history and powerful new music and lyrics. This song needs a big push on mainstream radio and I need to be singing it with 30 or 40 friends in a bar Christmas Eve. This should be a holiday classic for years to come.
Every Christmas, since this was released, I watch this masterpiece and am brought to tears. Thank you, Sabaton. For reminding me of the good in people and what Christmas used to mean. Merry Christmas, and God Bless.
the fact that this actually happened is amazing, and it shows that people CAN put aside their differences to make peace. even if it is just for a moment
Sad thing is, neither side wanted to fight each other afterwards, so they're commanders moved them to different parts of the trench and forbid any type of peace forming again.
WWI was a weird one for sure. Many of the pilots and officers came from high ranking and adjacent royal families... many of them were related to each other, cousins at least. So 3 months prior you may have been at a large party with all these people and not you're supposed to fight them. Hard for any man to do. Same thing with the pilots in WWI. The goal was to shoot down planes, not murder pilots. Those who kept aggressively attack planes that were no long combat capable, or shooting at pilots on the ground were seen as very dishonorable men. Many of them were reprimanded for doing things like that. It was not a thing gentlemen did. Even the Red Baron was that way. He turned it off once the fight was over.
@@MrClarkisgod I watched a movie about him and there was a scene when a German pilot shot a plane a lot of times wjen clearly it was out of action. The people on the ground even said let the pilot land and the Red Baron reprimanded the pilot who shot the plane
The fact is that there are less differences between worker Hans from Bavaria, postman Jean from Normandy and peasant Ivan from Smolensk than between each of them and "ruling elites" which send millions to die for their interests.
Imagine the confusion those soldiers had back then... It is truly one of the best stories of mankind, one that shows that despite all the terrors a human being can endure, at the end of the day is still a human being, not a machine made for war. I, personally, have the utmost respect for Sabaton because with their powerful music they manage to show us very important moments from our history and we shall remember what our ancestors did and what shall we do in the future. Once again, congratulations and keep up the good work! Epic as always!
I like to think sometimes, war was not meant for us. I don't know how to explain it well in words other than, the only reason war exists is cause the factors that lead to it always will, and we are forced to answer the call, the reason I say forced is due to the fact, no one wants to die, but they will die fighting. I hope that gets my idea out respectfully.
Society during the great war had a very different morality and code of honor than during IIWW, that is why you had british soldiers bury the Red Baron with all the honors after finally defeating him, it truly was the last major conflict with a sense of knighthood. Sure there were awful moments and the use of chemical weapons an asshole move, but the stories of IWW have a different feeling to them, more heroic in my opinion
I recommended this song to my English teacher when she asked me what good Christmas songs I know. She listened to this song on December 25 last year, just in time for the 110th anniversary of the Christmas Truce. Maybe you have one more listener now, Sabaton. Greetings from Saint Petersburg!
The Christmas truce is one of the historical events that always brings a tear to my eye and gives me *some* hope for humanity. In all of us is a part that just wants the contention to stop, but are forced to continue struggling by those in charge.
"We were soldiers Carried the war on our shoulders For our nations Is that why we bury our friends?" People we are living in the best English lyrics Sabaton has ever written.
"Herr Leutnant, why does the Swede with the weird haircut get a piano right in the trench, but I can't get a second pair of socks? Also, Tommy ROCKING that Menjou mustache.
"Ah you must be new, that's Sabaton. They make music about us and our brothers stories. They're actually pretty good. If we ever return home I'll play you a few of their songs."

I think this comment will be buried and forgotten, but it really hits hard, especially for my nationals: - When you sit in the Russian trench during Christmas, your Polish friends start to sing "Bóg się rodzi, moc truchleje", and from Austrian trenches you can hear "Pan Niebiosów obnażony"
When I hear this song I remember as if it was yesterday, when as a little boy I always went to my great-grandpa after school and he told me stories from the wars just like in the song. He had to fight both world wars as a soldier. His stories were mostly as moving as your song. Thanks to you I can see him in front of me and hear his voice. Thank you very much for this epic journey through time. His name was Paul, rest in peace .
We have a lot to learn from our elders. I lost two great grandfathers and a great uncle in the trenches of WW1. most ordinary soldiers on all sides were manual workers who had never experienced the military or war. It must have been awful, a hell on Earth that they had been thrust into. @M - v - P I’m glad your great grandfather survived both wars and was able to pass on his wisdom and experiences to you.
I feel the christmas truce is one of the most beautiful and underappreciated moments in the whole of modern history , showing that even during the hardest moments of humanity's history, humanity was well and alive and that regular people , who had nothing against each other, were forced to fight each other
@@mikoto7693 because the high brass forced them to fight or else got shot with treason charges iirc those who participated in the truce were punished in some sort for their seeking for peace
@@mikoto7693 It's what we do. Humans are very flawed creatures. I mean that in a lot of ways. For example we seem hell bent on destroying the very ecology that keeps us alive. While Humankind was great potential, i think we are too selfish as a species to survive unless we evolve to be better humans.
Well, now we have another example of humanity of modern history - Ukraine war and help that is given by polish people. This initiative is coming from the "bottom", not from the "Top" - government have nothing do with it. They just doing "political marketing" based on that - whole support for Ukraine is coming from private pockets of whole polish citizens.

Easily the best moment of human history. Through all the hatred, all the doubt, all the fear, humanity showed that it hadn't completely lost its mind. In the end, we're all the same. We just wear different uniforms.
@@denisjankovic2164 I forget which year it was, but aye it wasn't a permanent arrangement. It did have some positive lasting effect, however: both sides had to relocate the units that participated in the truce because they flat-out refused to fire at each other anymore. That just makes me happy lol, being a soldier myself. Being able to respect your enemy is a key part of the good soldier's mindset.
@@denisjankovic2164 From what i learned about it, The truce happened in either the first or second year, i think you are correct by saying the first year. It was also before they started doing massive conscription. Most of the people in the battlefield at this point in history where professional solders. They where trained to fight, But not to hate the enemy. They where (Mostly) All people who volunteered to be in the military and they could understand that this is just a job. Once people start being conscripted they just want the war to end. They have been seeing propaganda about each other to make them want to hate each other Then there is the fact that the generals did not want it to happen a second time either. Personally. This should happen in every conflict. If it is a major holiday, especially one that both sides celebrate, the fighting should be put on hold to celebrate life.
Never thought a Sabaton song whould bring to tears. Sitting on a train in Sweden smiling and tears running. What an awsome and buityful song. Hope this is played on the next Sabaton cruise.
En Livstid i Krig, I don't even speak Swedish but the live version is a critical hit to the feels every time I hear it. You know they're a great band when their music can inspire feelings like that across the whole spectrum.
At long last, the Christmas song has landed. Now I can celebrate the season properly, and subject my family to this beautiful melody because it is technically a Christmas song, much like Die Hard is a Christmas Movie
This might just be a perfect song. It has a positive message about peace and enjoyment of life, it sounds amazing, and it's made by passionate people who actually care about what they do. 10/10 the only Christmas song I'll play year round.

"The men were all fraternizing in the middle (we naturally did not allow them too close to our line) and swapped cigarettes and lies in the utmost good fellowship. Not a shot was fired all night" - Captain Robert Patrick Miles, 1st King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. If there was ever a song that was needed at this time, it would be this. It's rare that music moves me in the way that this song did. Fantastic job Sabaton, Crew, and all who were involved. Thank you
"We tend to forget, that behind every sight of every gun there is a human being." -*a clever man* Sabaton this song is, as always, pure amazement. The whole jingle style of piano actually adds a lot of awareness about what you're singing. Thank you very much for your work!
Why is it that Sabaton is the only band that can bring me to tears with songs about battlefield kindness. This song did it. No Bullets Fly got me for all of 2014 and 2015, but it still gets me now and then. Uprising is another one that hits me with that mental visual … maybe because I have four sons. Powerful, Sabaton. Very powerful. The imagery measures up to the song. Amazing job.
Inmate 4859 is my kryptonite (and now this one of course). The chorus sends me every time. The fact that they tried to strike his name from the history books and then at the end of the song when they say "WE know his name."
Hopefully we can all learn from this point in history and remember we are all brothers and sisters this holiday season. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. And thank you Sabaton for keeping the memories of these brave men alive in our hearts.
I’m in tears. Sabaton, I had expected Christmas Truce to be fantastic; as all your music is, and I have been waiting for this for ages… but this is so much more than I was expecting. This is phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. You always said how difficult it was to write a song about this topic, well let me tell you. You have done it justice. Thank you so much.
I feel absolutely the same. I have heard this now 10 times. I am in tears every. Damn. Time. They have not only done it justice, they have exceeded what I thought possible. It's a whole other level of Sabaton but really shows what the 'modern Sabaton' sound is going to be: symphonic, classical mixed with heavy, metal support. It is completely baffling. This is the new song that I will show and play for people who want to hear what the Sabaton fuzz is about. I feel so humble and privileged to experience this band in my lifetime and it feels they are constantly reaching new peaks with every new single, and every new album they release.
Perfectly happy to admit i cried over this. Those men of Germany, of Britain, of Belgium and of France (and all their far flung empires), who had been murdering eachother and the command of their government, and would spend four years murdering eachother after the 25th of December 1914, managed to spend most of a day in fellow-feeling and comradeship, in spite of and despite the will of their rulers. This story's always touched me deeply, and given me hope that we might rise above the petty hatreds that dictate our lives. That we could reach a day where there is no more war, and no more pain. And just a group of friends, playing footy and getting drunk, and having a good time.
@@Unknown_Genius Have you ever read the sci-fi book Enders Game. While I don't truly agree with it, one of the key ideas was that to defeat an enemy you must know them to the point of in some ways loving them. Most soldiers are not murderous psychopaths. In fact, I'd say those are the last people who militaries want on the front lines. Many are killing not because they hate the other side, though that may naturally develop as friends are wounded and die, but rather because it is their duty/job. War is a terrible thing, but there are reasons it exists. However, the truce is truly an inspiring story. Even if the leaders and nations as a whole have agendas, individuals can set aside their differences.
I read somewhere that when the officers ordered the soldiers who had spent Christmas 1914 with the ones who they were supposed to see as the enemy mutinied to the point of having to be replaced with new troops from the back of the lines. Nobody could move them to go and kill the men they'd played football with, shook hands with and took pictures with the day before.
Thank you Sabaton for giving us a moving, beautiful Christmas song that truly reminds us of the real power and meaning of Christmas : love, brotherhood, and peace for all peoples, wherever they may be, even in the most trying of times.
The Christmas Truce was a story that stuck with me forever since learning about it 20-something years ago in elementary school... Seeing and hearing this piece of art about it gave me goosebumps from start to end! Wow! Amazing! Sabaton, you guys are awesome!
My English grandfather was a WW I veteran. ... The story of this brave truce from that war has fascinated me for years - I have taught it as an English teacher in school, I have read about it, seen a (french) film about it - and now for the first time heard a song about it - And this video does the story justice. Great work, Sabaton ! You help us remember ! Thanks a lot!
The snoopy and the red baron song is lightly based on it too and was how I learned about it through that song and my dad telling me about what the song actualy ment. Ever since learning about the Christmas Miracle it's been one of my absoulte favorte moment in human history where men realised even if just for a brief moment war is pointless and only helps bureaucrats who don't even know they exist. It was a moment were solders chose instead of being wariors but to be human and to give their fellow man a rest from the hell their foolish leaders had thrust them into and just enjoy a nice quiet Christmas espacly since they knew for many it might be their last. It was a moment of true courage that showed that even in the darkest of times there's always a little glimer of light.
@@demi-fiendoftime3825 There was also a WWII incident involving Franz Steiger and- I kid you not- Charlie Brown. Brown’s plane was damaged after a bombing run, and Steiger escorted him out of the area rather than shoot him down. After the war, the two apparently found each other and became friends. Steiger was lucky his commanders likely never heard of it, or else he would have been treated as the German, French, Scots, and English were after the WWI Christmas Truce.
@@demi-fiendoftime3825 Wow, so I googled about the Franz Stigler (correct name) and Charlie Brown incident, and apparently this same man or band has a song about it, too. Had no idea because I’ve never heard of him/them, I only found this video looking for a History Channel documentary about the Christmas Truce. I’m going to listen to it now, too.
This song makes me shed a tear. Especially now, being a Russian, I really hope that the next Christmas we can finally say "We are all friends". We need such a miracle now. Upd: Guys, I thank you all for your kind words. It really gives me hope and will to believe in the future. You're amazing. Upd 2: Alas, it seems like this is not going to end this way. But let us hope we see the end of this terrible war soon enough. Stay true to yourselves, everyone. Merry Christmas.
This is what I always say, Russians aren’t bad. You had no choice in this war, I will say your lucky your not on Ukraine’s side, since as far as I’m aware Russia isn’t getting attacked too much, but good luck to all that you this war ends
Is there anyone who can't shed a tear to this song? Thank you Sabaton for a song that brings such raw emotion from a grown man in his 30's. Truly a masterpiece.
I was hoping you guys would do a song about this, but wasn't sure if it could be done in your usual style. I look forward to whatever it is you did though! It's going to be epic!
" Pokój buduje, wojna rujnuje" , to przysłowie przekazała mi moja Babcia i Dziadek którzy przeżyli cudem II wojnę światową, pozdrawiam Ludzi Dobrej Woli, niech Bóg będzie z wami 🇵🇱
A monument. A memory. A lesson we as a species failed to learn. But the tale will never be forgotten, so long as there are people left to remember that if our fear of one another can be overcome... Hatred can be left to flicker and fade away. You've succeeded at making me weep again, Sabaton. But I thank you. These are lessons I will never stop teaching those around me, for if I can convince even one to put aside their anger and remember that we are all human, I'll have achieved my purpose.
Also a cold reminder that the power always lied in the workers and soldiers of the world. If the soldiers refuse to fight, can there be a war? Even if all the politicians and generals demand it, if all the soldiers refuse, no shots will be fired.
Story Time: Days before Christmas Break, a college student is visiting Ypres, Belgium for their History class. As they walk through the field, they come across a lone wooden cross with an inscription that reads: "1914 The Khaki Chums Christmas Truce 1999 85 Years Later Lest We Forget" As they walk up to the cross, they leave a small Christmas wreath and bows their head in silence. As soon as the student is finished, they raise their head to see soldiers in various uniforms from Germany, Britain, & France. One of the soldiers walks up to the student and gives them a warm smile as if to say "Thank You & Merry Christmas". The soldier walks back to his comrades and they all leave & seemingly vanish whilst standing side by side, not as enemies, but as friends.
On December 24, 1914, an unofficial Christmas Truce was enforced on the Western Front. An act of trust and harmony, British and German soldiers mingled and played games together in the midst of one of the most atrocious events of the 20th century - World War I. Interesting enough, as the others have said, in both World Wars, notably more countries were on the Allied powers than the Central/Axis powers.
WW1;
Allies; Britain (which at the time included Austalia), USA, Italy, France, Serbia and Russia
Central powers; Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, the Ottoman empire.
WW2;
Allies; USA (E-fucking-ventually), Britain (again with Australia), France, Russia (who joined six months before America) and China.

Seems to me the humane thing would've been to turn rifles on commanders giving orders against such fraternisations. Oh well

@regi grenski fax
They definitely take sides haha

Bye!)
Merry Christmas brother!
Love how "Carol of the Bells" was incorporated in the piano and the song revolves around it. It's a perfectly melancholy yet joyous song. Sabaton has created yet another masterpiece.
Exactly, and at 6:06 it even switches completely to carol of the bells for a moment. :D
That’s what I thought! Awesome.
Completely agree with you on that.

Wow, thank you! Merry Christmas to you too!
the fact that this actually happened is amazing, and it shows that people CAN put aside their differences to make peace. even if it is just for a moment
Sad thing is, neither side wanted to fight each other afterwards, so they're commanders moved them to different parts of the trench and forbid any type of peace forming again.
простым солдатам эта война не нужна была. и у них не было личной ненависти к тем, кто сидит в окопах по ту сторону.
@@Crazyman817 I see what you are getting at
Society during the great war had a very different morality and code of honor than during IIWW, that is why you had british soldiers bury the Red Baron with all the honors after finally defeating him, it truly was the last major conflict with a sense of knighthood. The Christmas truce is one of the historical events that always brings a tear to my eye and gives me *some* hope for humanity. In all of us is a part that just wants the contention to stop, but are forced to continue struggling by those in charge.
Fun fact, Canada didn’t honour the truce and used the opportunity to attack.

I feel the christmas truce is one of the most beautiful and underappreciated moments in the whole of modern history , showing that even during the hardest moments of humanity's history, humanity was well and alive and that regular people , who had nothing against each other, were forced to fight each other
I don’t know how, after the truce and realising we’re just humans that they could just go back to trying to kill each other.
@@mikoto7693 because the high brass forced them to fight or else got shot with treason charges

I think this shows how flawed our systems are, those leading the fights in war should chose wether it ends in a truce or not. It’s happened before.
Well, now we have another example of humanity of modern history - Ukraine war and help that is given by polish people. I dont want to be mean but wasnt the truce only in the first year?
@@denisjankovic2164 I forget which year it was, but aye it wasn't a permanent arrangement. It did have some positive lasting effect, however: both sides had to relocate the units that participated in the truce because they flat-out refused to fire at each other anymore. They have been seeing propaganda about each other to make them want to hate each other
Then there is the fact that the generals did not want it to happen a second time either.
Personally. This should happen in every conflict. If it is a major holiday, especially one that both sides celebrate, the fighting should be put on hold to celebrate life.

The last gasp of innocence and humanity from the lost generation
If only all Wars could be settled over a football match! Pointless slaughter of human life on all sides.
Well I didn't cry but I started fighting the tears when the soldiers were eagerly walking out of the trenches in the second chorus.

A monument.
The Christmas Truce was one of the most important events in history in my opinion. It showed that we can be better, We need something like this today.
Too bad they didn't made truce for ortodox christmas in Serbia in any war. Even NATO bombing started at Easter day....
Have to say that the event could happen among nations that have smth in common. That never happend when Eurounion#2 who attaked the USSR

Also a cold reminder that the power always lied in the workers and soldiers of the world.
If the soldiers refuse to fight, can there be a war? Even if all the politicians and generals demand it, if all the soldiers refuse, no shots will be fired.
Story Time:
Days before Christmas Break, a college student is visiting Ypres, Belgium for their History class. As they walk through the field, they come across a lone wooden cross with an inscription that reads:
"1914
The Khaki Chums
Christmas Truce
1999
85 Years Later
Lest We Forget"
As they walk up to the cross, they leave a small Christmas wreath and bows their head in silence.
…damn
That gave me chills, short as it is, incredible story to picture.
Literally Ghosts of Christmas Past.
Damn.
Even in death, humanity between bitter enemies triumphs. That’s beautiful, man, really.
