    The 870 is one of the greatest shotguns ever, I still have my original 870 from when I was in high school although I put it in a bullpup stock recently.

      some kind of rifle with minimum barrel allowed, short or fold able butt-stock, or .45 smg. Either one with hollow point ammo. Automatic, plenty of ammo, precise. Great for home defense.

      I had that argument with someone and apparently it's only matter of correct ammunition, you dont want full metal jacket. I never tested it myself, I would like these guys actually made a video of plausibility of ARs or SMGs being a proper home defense weapon.

    I think shotguns have somehow taken a backseat in the minds of some people, they tend to have favored the AR's now and given up on shotguns. Not saying there is nothing wrong with the AR but some just think the shotgun is old fashioned. I have had a few short barreled 12 gauge shotguns over the years, a Winchester Model 12, a Remington 870 Police, an Ithaca 37, heck even an old High Standard Riot King. Recently I snagged another 870, an older version from about 1980 and I like it a lot. Buckshot is a great defensive load, it is time tested and proven, and you don't need to buy 3 inch punishing loads, 2 3/4 inch will work fine, same with the slugs. I used to carry a little 20 gauge coach gun and buckshot out of that gun was very tough on whatever target I shot. Shotguns are certainly worth what you pay for them. A good 870 Remington off the rack is much cheaper than even the most basic AR.

      ***** No I think a classic Ruger 10/22 or Remington 597 would be the best bang for buck. IMHO Both chambered in 22lr; which is like 5-6$ for 50-100 rnds depending on brands and availability. Another option would be like the AR 15 variant or other semi auto carbine type weapon in 22LR. But you must certainly don't HAVE to get a shotgun or 22LR lol.

    Out of a 18.5" barrel, Federal Vital-Shok 9 pellet and Hornady TAP 8 pellet 00-Bucks pattern much better. Both offer about a 10" pattern at 25 yards and a chest size spread at 35 yards. You should test those and compare them with other 00-Buck loads for pattern and penetration.
    Hell, I'm just happy to see another shotgun video.

    So you cut down a tree with a 12 gauge. Is that why some shotguns come with a "chainsaw" grip?

    • @bobjinkle3840
      @bobjinkle3840 10 років тому +4

      I'm pretty sure that the "chainsaw grip" is for holding the shotgun steady while door breaching. It's for being able to stick it right up against the hinges....and blow them out.

    My son and I were shooting pumpkins today with the 870 and slugs. The other guns we shot were the AR15, and his 30-30 deer rifle. By far, the shotgun was the most fun of all three. At one point everyone that was shooting at the range stopped and came down to watch us shoot pumpkins with slugs. It really was a cool moment for my 17 year old son.

  • @johnleake708
    @johnleake708 10 років тому +1

    The pattern of any shotgun is unique to that gun, with some similarities between guns with the same configuration. My Remington 870 Magpul has very different results than you observed. Mine with 00 buckshot patterned about 10 inches at 10 yards and expanded to about 14 inches at 25 yards. That is with the Remington supplied tactical choke tube which has a door breaching front part of the tube. The instructor was quite amazed at the pattern, which was not at all what others saw that day.
    My experience is that the pattern from different guns can be very different.

    Just bought a 870 tactical with the big breecher muzzle brake last week. Just shot it aaaannnddd whhhhooo does it kick. I also used 3inch magnum slugs so it kicks like a mule and horse with a small donkey thrown in but damn! Even on paper you could tell the damage! Definitely will be my home defense gun! Also, be off note, if you are using 3inch shells, it’s gonna be 5+1 instead since you won’t get the six rounds down the tubes since the ammo tube is for 2 3/4 inch shells.

    You need to shoot some old appliances with the 12 gauge. A friend and I were shooting my 870 with 1 ounce slugs @1600FPS at an old washing machine. I estimate the distance at 60-70 feet. It made a very loud clang when it hit, tore a nice hole and rocked the washing machine back on 2 legs (think of tipping back in your chair) before righting itself again. We were impressed with the amount of impact energy the slug has.

    My Remington 870 tactical can get a 5" group at 25yards using Federal 00 buckshot w/ Flitecontrol wad. It pretty much doubles the effective range of the shot to about 45-50yards. Id recommend that ammo to anyone looking to get the absolute best out of their cylinder bore shotgun. Warning: does not work well in choked shotguns.

    I would almost argue using bird shot for home defense. You have a better spread of pellets going at the intruder that if it doesn't kill him, it'll scare him off enough knowing he was just shot. There's definite pros to using buck shot as well, you just might need to be more accurate depending on the openness of the home.

    You could think more mass = more kinetic energy. But actually velocity increases the energy exponentially. E=1/2 * m * v^2. Twice the mass gives twice the power but twice the velocity gives 4 times more energy. In the end the energy in the powder is a constant and buckshot spreads the energy to like 9 pieces.

    Couple thoughts. 1: LOAD DIRECT TO CHAMBER, CLOSE ACTION, LOAD TUBE. 2: That scrub oak is more like 6-8" diameter. Nice try.

    I loved this, my first gun was a Mossberg 500. A shotgun is so versatile, you can never go wrong with owning one. I would love to see a video for distance and patterns for Winchesters PDX1 Defender slug & buck combo. And more distance/pattern tests with various manufacturer ammo, lethal and non-lethal. Remember, you do the tests so we don't have to haha. Love this channel.

    In a home defense gun fight at 5 to 7 yards any shot will get the job done, multiple videos prove this, the damage is very similair between bird buck, and slug

    Pattern is also greatly affected by choke. From that pattern I'm guessing an open choke. As far as people's questions on lethality 1 buckshot pellet traveled over 100 yards through the woods, and struck another hunter in the chest and killed him around here about 14 years ago.
    So really it's lethal further than you can reliably hit with it. I find 50 yards is about it with a modified choke. Of course at 100 yards when you start shucking buffered 00 buck at them they better hit the dirt because it will be a hailstorm in their general direction.
