  • Video proof that you can remove a 4.6L Northstar V8 through the top, I did on my 1997 Deville. You’ll want to lift the vehicle safely and put jackstands under the frame rails of the body. Extract the refrigerant from the A/c system, drain your engine oil and coolant. Discount the flex plate and torque converter bolts. Remove the intake manifold and starter. Remove the A/C compressor, alternator, tensioner, idler pulley, and power steering pump. Discount the three braces/brackets from the transmission to engine(with jackstands and wood supporting the transmission) discount the electrical connectors and grounds from the engine. You’ll need to remove the coolant crossover to bolt a chain to the motor. Of course one of the first things you’ll want to do is disconnect the exhaust from the manifolds. Radiator of course would need to be removed. Might be missing a couple things but that’s just about everything.

    People still tell me that you can't do this and yet here it is again I'm sharing this around so people cannot dispute this anymore

      Yes please do, it’s not easy but it’s possible, not extremely hard either. I can make another detailed video another time/show me dropping the motor in.

      No way this is easier then going out the bottom… but my main experience is with the 3.8 fwd

    If it was my own car I'd try doing it that way just for experimental and learning experience. But if a customer asked me to remove/replace a FWD Northstar engine, the only way I would do it, would be a drop out from the bottom, with a car hoist, in a heated garage.
    I make my living fixing cars but I don't even have a garage to work out of, so when winter comes, my tools have to get put away.

    I posted a white Eldorado engine and transmission both pulled through the top NP. Good to see more folks doing and taking the challenge.🙂

    You are the man bubba. An achievement indeed. Did you drill out and tap for larger head bolts on the replacement block? You did this without a lift using only a cherry picker and floor jacks?

      Yes yes and yes. Used Northstar Performance bullet proof kit wasn’t bad at all to do. No lift either.

    What did you use to remove the torque converter bolts?

    • @MechanicalMikesRoadsideRepair
      @MechanicalMikesRoadsideRepair  8 місяців тому +1

      Instead of removing them through the starter hole like most people say, there’s an access panel at the front exhaust manifold area below the waterpump, used a 1/2” socket and ratchet I believe with various extensions.

      Very similar process, and the kit can be found from the company Northstar Performance out of Canada.
