  • Yamaha b series upright pianos: www.cunningham...
In this video, we review 3 upright pianos from Yamaha’s b series. These are the most affordable pianos from Yamaha, and they come in 3 sizes:
The b1 is the smallest, with a height of 43 inches. This is a terrific piano for folks who have limited space, or are just starting out on their first piano.
The b2 has a height of 44.5 inches, and is a great “Goldilocks” piano, not too small, not too big, and for a lot of folks it’s “just right”.
The b3 is the tallest, with a height of 48 inches. This is a great option for folks who are more serious about the piano, and want to get a great sounding instrument at an affordable price.
One of the questions we get a lot is, what difference does the size of a piano make? Well, the piano makes its sound from a wooden hammer covered in felt striking a metal string. According to physics, the longer the length of string, the richer sound you will get, due to the extra overtones you hear, as well as a longer vibration time. The size of the soundboard, which is a thin piece of wood that covers the back of the piano, will also determine the overall sound quality and volume, since it acts as an acoustic amplifier.
As an experiment, we’re going to hear these 3 different sized pianos back to back. See if you can hear the differences between them!

    SC2 Silent System
The SC2 is a new Silent System from Yamaha is an options available for all the b series pianos that lets you use headphones to play the piano completely silently. But what’s really cool is that through the headphones, even the smallest b series piano sounds like a 9’ CFX or Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand!
The SC2 Silent System features a sleek updated interface and uses smaller headphone jacks that are the same size as the ones you use on your smartphones or computers. To put the piano into silent mode, press the middle pedal and lock it to the left.
The SC2 is now compatible with Yamaha’s UD-WL01 wireless lan adapter, which you can insert into the piano’s front USB port. That means that you can now control your Silent Piano using Yamaha’s amazing Smart Pianist app, available at no extra cost for iPhones and iPads.
Smart Pianist makes it easy to navigate through all the new instrument voices, and even gives you options to customize the sound of the piano through the headphones, down to tuning individual strings if you’d like! The Smart Pianist app also contains a large library of sheet music. What’s more, you can even create chord charts from any song in your iTunes library! There are even options to record yourself and save your songs.
The Yamaha b series pianos are terrific, affordable instruments. And with the new SC2 Silent system options, you can enjoy the best of fully acoustic pianos paired with amazing technologies.

WOW!!!! The three pianos make the impression of the songs sound different. The notes held longer so the transition from note to another note was so smooth sounding on the taller piano. The short piano sounded more choppy. I never knew there was a difference among pianos. Thank you for this video!

Yes. The tones get longer and more mature sounding as the pianos get larger. I think the B3 sound similar to a U1 and looks to be around the same size.

Normal home use B1 is good and B2 also. B3 good for studio or performers. B3 is very intresting instrument and is very close to U1.

The B2 is nicely prepared but the B3 is the nicer piano in that it is richer sounding than its smaller brothers. I'd like to hear the U1 vs. B3 difference. The U1 is considerably more money but they're the same size. Now, I think the U1 is considerably nicer, but the B3 has an attractive price.

I am curious how these were recorded, and processed. What mics were used? was placement the same on each piano? were the recording eq'd in any way?

I honestly prefered the B1, at least as far as I can tell from this video. It sounds more clear and "direct" to me.

  • @agerven

Very subtle! In the far upper and lower ranges i like the B3 best, in the mid range i'd prefer the B2. The B3 seems to do some coloration in the form of excessive formants in the mid-range.
In all cases i'd say the differences are subtle, and each of these 3 will make a nice instrument for playing fine piano music. Are the hammers and mechanics identical on these 3?

No B1 and B2 have same mechanic and hummer. The B3 has underfelt hammers and longer keys.

The B3 is the same design and scaling of a U1F the new U1 has a totally different scaling sound

The B2 was the clearest. And in reality the silent system should sound the same in all 3 pianos.

How does the digital sound system work? Does it need electricity or a battery?

My apologies , Mr. Sung, but this is more of a question. What was the name of the composition you played to demonstrate the B series pianos? Your expressive playing motivates to get “ back into the piano.” Thank you so much.

If the string vibrates the sound board to amplify the sound then the vibrating sound board should vibrate other unstrung strings in the piano, isn't it?

    • @CunninghamPiano

Yes, except that the piano also has dampers, which prevent that from happening.

This means that, once the silent system is plugged, the "physical" differences between the three pianos (for example, the more or less great soundbaord...) are no more effective?
