    Certainly enjoyed this historical flashback and I think it was a good idea to let the sound of the trains running provide the soundtrack, especially of this vintage. I got even more of sense of them being vintage, you know. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for watching. Yes their "song" is much better than any soundtrack to compliment the action.

    Amazing the color after all these years, and the quality of the product speaks for its self. John Potter would be proud.

    Your collection is just outstanding! What amazes me is that T-Rail track though. There’s only one other dude that I’ve seen with anything close to what you have, and it was on a TM video. His name was Chuck Roehm Magic of Lionel part 3.

      Thanks for watching, glad that you liked it. The LSRR T-Rail layout has been in the planning stage since the 1980's, finally realized 4 years ago when I had room to build it.

      Thanks for watching. I thought the vast variety, as you said, was worth showing. Of course this is only a sample of Lionel's prewar production. Many more items and variations were made, and this is only the O gauge. Add Standard Gauge and it would near double the amount of items.

    Isn't it amazing how well these articles that were meant to be no more than toys have held up so well? Almost astonishing really. I'll bet the men who made them (even though they knew they were making the best) would be amazed at just how good they really were.
    And the growling, grinding, crunching sounds! Wow! Who needs modern sound systems? These toy trains had a unique sound all their own that still fires the imagination!
    (OK, the whistle was a good addition, we have to give them that much!)
    We can't help but wonder how many of todays trains will still be running 80, 90, or 100 years from now. Having worked with electronic components for 30 years I wouldn't place too many bets.
    An amazing collection Jim! A a fine video as well! Thanks!

      Thanks for watching and for your kind comments. I have tried to assemble a collection of the best condition I could afford and maintenance prior to running is always necessary. I am always cleaning wheels, oiling axles, lubing and repairing motors, replacing car light wires and bulbs. It takes a while to get ready to roll. I agree that E-units can be repaired, not so much with modern electronics. I do occasionally sneak a modern Lionel diesel or tender into the consist for the sound system.

      @@JFLionelT-RailOperator You're welcome!
      I repaired one E-unit myself so far, growing the third hand to manage it was tough!
      The last E-unit that blew on one of my engines I just removed and wired the motor to the pick-up and the ground just to run it forward. I hardly ever back a train anyway.
      I'll repair the bum E-unit when I grow that third hand again, the last one fell off!

      @JFLionelT-RailOperator  Рік тому

      @@wayneantoniazzi2706 E-unit repair is a challenge for us who do not have the Lionel service station tools. You do need 3 hands in a space that is less than 1 square inch to hold contact fingers and the plunger/pawl in-place while snapping in the new drum. This is one of my least favorite repair-jobs, but I have gotten a little better each time I do it.

    With all the digital sound systems out there for these modern model trains, it's nice and relaxing to hear just the mechanical clickety clack of the tin or metal wheels on your T Rail layout along with the growl of an early electric motor. Modern can motors are more powerful for sure, but they don't have that O zone 'smell'.

    • @JFLionelT-RailOperator
      @JFLionelT-RailOperator  5 місяців тому

      I do occasionally add modern sound by including a digital tender or B-unit with Railsounds in a train consist, but prefer the natural sounds of prewar and early postwar motors. When I need more power for long unit trains I double or triple-head power. T-rail gives me better tractive effort, even with slippery prewar wheels.

    Nothing like prewar tinplate. 👍Have to edit this. Spectacular Hudson collection. Did I see three white/brown 814R cars in one consist? Also, the green passenger cars coupled with gray semi scale Hudson is one of the most beautiful sets Lionel ever made IMO. Love your semi scale B6’s too.

      Thanks for watching. I spend most of my 50 years of collecting just accumulating and dusting trains on shelves. Now that I have room and built a T-Rail layout, I want to run every train on the shelves be it a wind-up Hafner or a full-scale Lionel.

I’ve noticed a predominant focus on pre-war stuff and I’m not sure if there is any postwar accessories I know for sure there isn’t any modern ones. Is it based off of a certain time and place from 100 years ago or did you base it off of your hometown or some other idea entirely?

      @@JFLionelT-RailOperator great to hear! I myself have had two major ideas for layouts the first one beginning a futuristic, art deco style layout, that would be based upon what people from 1930 to 1959 thought the future might be as well as what it actually was and what it could’ve been. The other one would be a pre-war inspired layout that would be modeled off of a heritage railway complete with pre-war and post war themed items as well as a few modern stuff like how on some heritage railways have a few pieces of modern equipment for work trains, and auxiliary purposes.
