    another great video I relate to. I'm a crocheter that learned how to knit and the continental way is exactly what feels the most natural to me. I will subscribe, Ty

    This is the clearest video I have seen on Continental knitting, especially the purl stitch. Thank you very much.

    I switched to Continental style about 38 years ago and love it. I will use English when I am knitting fair isle. Main color in Continental with left hand and alternate color in English using my right hand. Works great!

    I'm teaching myself to knit and this is the method I use, it is easier if you are a crocheter.

    Thank you for going through the motions slowly, and repeatedly showing and explaining them! Your pace really helped me to learn it, and to see why I'd been having trouble with my continental style purling.

    As a German who has always knitted Continental I must say, I never used my middle finger like that. I just place it on the left side of the stitches, I just hold the yarn up with my index finger, "grab" the yarn with the needle and pull it through 🤷‍♀️

    This is the only way I've been able to knit, and I believe it's because of its similarity to crocheting.

    Awesome! Thanks! I got reasonably at Continental knitting knit stitch yesterday, first time! But I couldn't work out purling because other videos don't really show what you are supposed to be doing with your fingers much except to say "bring the yarn to the front". Thanks I think I've got it now!
    Going to go knit a sampler of stockinette, then ribbing, then I'll practice increases and decreases for a bit. Then I think I'll be ready to knit a sock and then some finger less gloves, which is why picked up knitting again. After giving up English knitting in disgust because no matter what I did I couldn't seem to do anything but crazy tight just about need a crowbar to get the stitches in D: And I couldn't for the life of me work out how to cast off. This was in the days before UA-cam though :P
    But I also did casting off successfully yesterday, thanks to the wonderful UA-cam knitting teachers, and you seem like one of the best. So thanks again, I'm really enjoying it this time round!

    Thank you for the demonstation. I have never seen it done this way. I can imagine that it would be more difficult for people with arthritic conditions to use this method. I learned the English method 55 years ago but took up crocheting instead.

    Have crocheted for 35 + years so when I learned to knit a year ago it was only natural, as I'm a right-handed crocheter, to continental knit. I have osteoarthritis and it isn't any more difficult to knit continental than to crochet.

    When you do the k1 p1 k1 p1 etc, do you do the same on the next row or do you alternate it to p1 k1 p1 k1?
    I'm a crocheter, but just started knitting, it would be great with more knitting videos from you, you're such a great teacher

    • @naztazia
      @naztazia  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! The answer depends 1) upon the stitch pattern and 2) whether it's in a row or in a round 3) whether odd or even # of stitches. Assuming it's 1x1 ribbing, in a row, you would k1, p1 and then the following row you would purl the knits and knit the purls. However in the round, you would k1, p1 around and then the next round knit the knits and purl the purls.

    my main problem is that the yarn slides off of my finger and i constantly need to fix it. it’s hard for the yarn to keep moving if it’s wrapped around my other fingers too

    When I use continental style. my stitches get too tight. So I prefer English style (which is how I learned it from my mother years ago anyway).

    I’m danish. I’m nearly 50 years. I have knitted the continental way for more than 40 years. But the way you show it doesn’t match the way I’ve learned it. Especially the purl stitch seems much harder to do your way than the way I learnt it by my grandmother. I can try and do a video one day and send it to you so you can see ‘the Danish way’, that is if you find my way to be different from your way 😉🧐😀

    • @naztazia
      @naztazia  5 років тому +1

      The method in this video is definitely the "continental" method, according to most published knitting books. If your purl stitch is easier, then it sounds like maybe you are doing a variation called "cottage" knitting? There are also about 10 other names I've heard it called as well (irish knitting, peruvian knitting, etc). With that method, with purl, you insert the needle from right to left, then flick the yarn with your left thumb over the needle to purl. Some knitters using this method also have the yarn pinned to their sweater to regulate tension.
