    I just found out that you can use your Bluetooth reader on your phone to detect some skimmers.
    Basically turn on your phone's Bluetooth, put it net to reader, if a device is detected and the name is a long string of number (and letters?) it's probably positive for a skimmer.

    The fact that this device needs to exist makes me happy that almost all payment terminals in my country use chip-and-pin.
    Thanks for letting me know that this thing exists, it could be very handy if I'm traveling internationally.

      chip skimmers are a thing

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 4 роки тому +2

      @@UntrackedEndorphins True, but the chances of finding that are lower, and for the majority of purchases I use contactless these days. Only times I have to use chip is when I am doing certain transaction types at retailers, and they require a chip read, and not all retailers are able to do contactless at present. Only one place still uses magstripe info, that is the Post Office.
      Otherwise for retail shops the only magstripe read is for loyalty cards, which mostly use magstripe read at the POS card reader, though some also use a UPC on the card, which is read by the scanner as a regular UPC code.
      Only the US seems to be stuck with a majority of the POS being magstripe, and a small number being chip as they slowly upgrade decades old payment systems. There probably still are shops that use a zip zap imprinter to get the card number off the raised sections of the card, though here the chances of finding a retailer that has that as even a backup are tiny. Last saw one a decade ago.

      Majority of indoor POS that I see now in the USA does use the chip or contactless, but older ATMs and gas stations are still almost all magstripe. I can't do much about that infrastructure besides use this device.

    That's a pretty neat gizmo, more reliable than looking for the Bluetooth data interfaces. In the few times I've gotten gas recently I've used the station with contactless RFID reader, but that's not my closest station. (I've filled my lawn mower more than my car...)

    What about the ATM’s that take the card in all the way? Like the ones in Mexico. How would that work?

    • @BeckyStern
      @BeckyStern  Рік тому +2

      should work fine for detecting if there is a second read head, if you can physically get it in and back out again. Mechanically it depends. Maybe that card slot isn't deeper than the card, in which case the populated part of the board would stick out (like at my local ATM, it locks it but I can still see the card). But I know which ones you are talking about, they don't just latch down on your visible card, they suck it up and in-- not sure! Could break the Hunter Cat and/or the ATM! I bet the Electronic Cats folks know the answer...

    Next step: emulate some fake cards to give the skimmers false data.

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 4 роки тому +5

      Or just call the bank who is issuing the reader ( contact number will be on the machine) and tell them there is a card skimmer at location. They will be out there pronto, as they are by law required to eat the loss, especially with credit cards, and you can bet they will do the retailer over for allowing this to occur.

      Newer cards here do have a chip (and touch-to-pay). But a lot of North American infrastructure still has magstripe readers, especially in Mexico, where the creators of this device are.
