When you are checking for the skimmer, don't do it with subtlety in the fear of being weird, do it crazily so you don't get confused for the culprit if someone else puts a skimmer there later on.

I recommend getting a credit card with an EMV Chip, which counters skimmers because it ensures every transaction is unique and differently encrypted every time.
In the UK and Italy you only get these on ATM machines now and it's VERY VERY rare because of the nature of how the pads work, they have to be installed basically in graveyard shift times and the bank will check them before opening and closing and at intervals during the day. Pin guards like these are also less common on card readers here, you'd struggle to install one of these without making it very obvious.

They can't get a job actually, they have to resorts to scams and petty thefts for livelihoods. I don't condone crime and theft, but if their local jurisdiction doesn't provide a solution for them or reintegrate them in society, they have this last resort. It's sad that a simple mistake compromises the rest of their lives.

This is why my work has an alarm on the pads and there are security sticks on it so if they try to mess with it it will be quite obvious. (and yes we replace any worn seals so no picking to try and hide it)

Every single device I have to put my card in, I always always inspect. Unless I’m paying with Apple Pay and I absolutely must place my card in, I inspect the device. I had to withdraw a lump sum from the bank some years ago, when the teller directed me to insert my card into the reader, I picked it up and gave it a full inspection, all while people on the line behind me waited, she goes “this is the bank and that reader is safe” and I replied, I don’t know you or whoever has access to these devices when no one is around, thank you.

I developed a habit of regularly checking the credit card machines as a part of my usual duties working overnight at a Circle K. I was always the only employee working (because they claimed the store was never busy enough to warrant a second employee, load of shit but whatever), and even I knew that even with as careful as I was there was no way I was going to catch everything with the sheer volume of customers I'd deal with. Not sure if I should be grateful or disappointed I never found a skimmer.

I was always the only employee working (because they claimed the store was never busy enough to warrant a second employee, load of shit but whatever), and even I knew that even with as careful as I was there was no way I was going to catch everything with the sheer volume of customers I'd deal with. Not sure if I should be grateful or disappointed I never found a skimmer.

Nope. If your card has an NFC chip(not the visible one) that allows tap to pay it doesn't matter if you have a chip.
