  • The tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has placed a spotlight on the durability of bridge structures. Data shows the Bay Bridge is one of more than 17 thousand bridges in the United States that is "fracture critical" - meaning if one part of the bridge's support system fails, the entire bridge comes down.

    I’m so glad they are starting to look at this problem. It’s a real concern!

      Yes, especially with people coming in at the open borders who do not like America or it’s people.

    When a major event shines a light most bridges we drive over (every day) have inadequate Collision protection around them. Well that's just great to learn 😳

  • @Redslayer86

    I cross it every day, I noticed after the key bridge, another bridge I used to cross periodically, that the bay bridge has zero protection from impact. They definitely need to consider building some defenses up. Its almost a shame because the bride is a beautiful structure, but its needed.

    • @DefundtheIRS1776

      Is it? The key bridge went 50 years without being struck as it should be. This is just a knee jerk reaction

    • @Redslayer86
      @Redslayer86 Місяць тому

      @@DefundtheIRS1776 The key bridge being down is a problem. one of the bay spans going down would be devastating. Why wait for a potential accident that could obliterate Maryland's economy, when they could prevent it instead?

    • @DefundtheIRS1776
      @DefundtheIRS1776 Місяць тому

      @@Redslayer86 because the amount of time, money and resources could be better utilized elsewhere. The key bridge made it 50 years and didn’t get struck once. The captain who hit it either did it on purpose or was wildly unqualified.

    Firefighting after the Key Bridge incident. But, not too late to secure others.

    why is the closed caption on a 10 second delay here? This seems to be a common problem with news videos so I'm sure there's a setting that can be adjusted before posting.

    I think people know if a main support is taken out most of a bridge will collapse

    As someone that lives next to the bay and uses it regularly this is terrifying !! It's 3 times as long and always packed with traffic at any hour. This issue needs to be resolved asap!!

    We have known this since the sunshine skyway collapse in 1980 this should have been done ,40 years ago

    The answer is simple,build concrete islands around the piers
    Cheap and effective.
    They did it on the skyway bridge in florida

    Bad use of terms... Not fracture critical...it's lack of redundancy

    • @brianb4501
      @brianb4501 2 місяці тому

      Fracture critical to me means bridge should be closed until the fractures are repaired. Now, if this is a major shipping lane and there's no dolphin support, then add it to the infrastructure budget if it's not already there. A bridge being struck by a container ship doesn't happen often.

    Unlike bridges in PA going over the Delaware River which have dolphins protection, many US bridges do NOT have those massive concrete bumpers to protect structure supports for bridges.

  • @stephenscering1776

    all those pylons and no dolphins in sight (those are concrete barriers that protect the bridge pylons. If someone wanted to do a terrorist attack they just got a new idea.

    When I drove Tractor Trailers, I HATED the Bay Bridge.. When you are in a big truck, you cannot see the side barriers .. Not only that, but when they close 1 span and put all the traffic on the other and you are inches from a head on accident .. It is crazy sketchy..
    On a motorcycle, I actually feel safer.. Although with the Key Bridge collapsing, I thing for bike week this year.. I will go the extra miles to run up 95 and then down through Delaware rt 13 and 1.. A lot longer, but much safer..

      I prefer the Bay bridge over the Tydings bridge on 95. That bridge is way more scary in a big truck, especially when you’re empty fighting those crosswinds.

    • @kenma8806
      @kenma8806 2 місяці тому

      @@claytonbrown7100 yeah "the plank bridge" . lol.. the crosswinds can get crazy, but that bridge they do not close one side and have traffic all on just the other side of the bridge.. For some reason the only thing that bothered me going northbound was the scale once you got off of it.... Also I pulled flatbed, rgn and dropdecks.. so I really didn't have the crosswind issue unless I was pulling something big.
      Go over the Bay bridge on a very windy day.. it can also be a challenge.. Also just last year a big truck went over the side of the Bay Bridge..

      @@dm8844 lol.. I do not have many friends that I ride with.. I travel alone most of the time and many of those that I know will always take the Bay Bridge because it is much shorter.. Coming back from OC, i will probably still take the Bay Bridge.. 3 lanes and a newer bridge. and much shorter going to WV. And after 5 days on OC, you just want to get home..

    Here's an idea. Less foreign aid and use the money to improve our transportation infrastructure. Like the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Dolphins would only be needed to protect the pylons adjacent to the main shipping channel.
