The two solo parts of the Concerto for two violins in D minor, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, have survived in Bach’s own handwriting. This autograph dates from around 1730, a few years after the composer had moved from Köthen to Leipzig. Bach composed most of his instrumental concertos in the period 1717-1723, while working at the court of Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen, but this work appears to be an exception.

When I hear masterpieces like this, I always feel sorry for the people who haven´t heard this kind of music. Some people think they have no interest in listening to Bachs music, or classical music in general, but they are just not curious enough. Or maybe their parents and social environment didnt/doesnt listen to this kind of music and they just dont really know or realize that its there. They dont know what they are missing... Therefore it is very important to try out things and new stuff to explore whats out there and what you might like. There is so much each of us doesnt know or does not think about, but could be one of the things we would be most dedicated to.

Most people do not like classical music because they are too lazy to listen. It takes some effort to get familiar with classical music. One doesn't need to know the theory of music, which can be hard to master!, to appreciate the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and others. Letting oneself be seduced by their compositions will suffice.

@@horatiohornblower868 I agree! Most people have prejudices about classical music, like its just there to be "relaxing" and every piece is calm. They just dont know that classical music can be very exiting and engaging, and on the other hand also really calming and intimate. It has everything. But they rather listen to the newest hits (nothing wrong with that) instead of also discovering a new genre.

I think some people cannot handle the intensity of exploring this fine line between profound joy and deep sorrow.

@@L1102 And these newest hits are often already exhausted in 3 or 4 different accords, endlessly repeated .... how boring and primitive is that in comparison with a highly inspirated, composed fugue of JSBach?!

First of all, I love this movement! It speaks to me of longing and beckoning. I am curious about the varying levels of dynamics and the seemingly "wavy", "in and out" sound in this particular rendition. I'm not sure whether to attribute it to the period instruments or to this ensemble's interpretation of dynamic indications (if there are such indications).

Hi there, I think you are referring to the 'BWV' in the title? BWV stands for Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, or Bach works catalogue, which is a catalogue of all compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, categorised by genre.

This piece is notoriously difficult to pull off live- it wants so desperately to rush. Sato of course expertly navigates this group through any turbulence for an extremely cohesive performance. Better than just about all the others on youtube (esp considering modern groups)
