- (Visit: www.uctv.tv/) Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes General James Mattis (U.S. Marine Corp. ret.), former Head of Central Command for a discussion of his military career. Topics covered include: his formative years, the skill set and temperament required to be a marine, his command philosophy, his battle experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, the role of the military in securing peace, the contribution of the military to the policy debate, and his advice for students as they prepare for the future. Recorded on 03/20/2014. Series: "Conversations with History" [6/2014] [Public Affairs] [Show ID: 28135]
Gen. Mattis was my battalion commander in 1/7 Marines in 29 Palms, CA, i 1991. What a great Marine. I went to war with him, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and I think he is one of the best in the USMC leadership. Cheers!!!!!
Aaaaahhhhh good ol 29 stumps !!! The armpit of the corps!!!! Corporal Barrow 1998 to 2001 man I miss it
He had file cabinets in his office that were open to the Marines. If you wanted to know how the Turkish infantry attacked trench positions during WWI, he had an article or book on the subject.
xpictos777 Marines are encouraged to read, self-educate and self-improve, from Boot Camp forward. Always have been. General Alfred Gray, as Commandant of the Corps beginning in the late 1980's formally instituted a reading list by rank. However, the Corps as an "expeditionary force in readiness" may be sent into any clime, any place, any time, to deal with a totally unpredictable situation that cannot be preplanned for. This is why the Corps has always greatly valued the individual's who constantly self-educate, and who can "think on their feet" and act. Intelligence lacking the courage to act, or physical fitness and ability to act cannot control and affect an unpredictable situation encountered. This is why the U.S.Marine Corps is one of the most unusual, yet most capable, of the world's military forces.
Achilles B Yep. What a hoot. Used to go to the range office and designate our own ranges out in the desert. Took Gunner Elkendear with us and did all kinds of weird shit with weapons and explosives.
Ray Thompson, thank you for your service.
Good to have a man who wishes to improve his men intellectually, as well as physically.
Just the calibre man, America needs. He's loyal...faithful...intelligent...wise, and won't be "jacked around" by foolhardy, liberals! Welcome, "Mad-Dog!"
He commanded a bibliotheque for the regiments he was in charge
made them get unterested to reading books
He stood by them ready to explain them talk about rhe rext they were reading
Has a great respect for books and the huge stoeies knowlege they carry
a
The fact that the man is even sitting there talking to that individual is a testament to his character.

I know, right?
"They never bought a television, but we had a great big library." That is some good parenting.
Thanks to his voracious envy to learn to strive to improve knowledge that made made what Hr is todayGl Mattis is a referencewe can rely uponRespectxx
Try to keep screens away from your children these days
I prefer life beyond screens too, but they’re pretty helpful applied properly. I wonder how Mattis would feel about _adaptive technology_ (iPads w/ targeted apps) in the education process?
Pyramid of Control He’d approve if it ultimately increases the lethality of the US military.
mahlstadt surely
What a wonderful man. I’m writing this during the Trump campaign for re-election, 2020. The contrast between these two men cannot be overstated. Reading, knowledge of history, sense of chivalry (does DJT even know/understand this word?), understanding the enemy is also human (from Nimitz), how to lead, etc. The entire interview was so inspirational. Such character, such a role model. Politicians: sit up and take notice.
I'm in Africa and like international politics a lot. Gen. Mattis is a great leader. I came to know him for his love of knowledge and that he conveyed 7000 books to operational grounds.
I have ordered for his book, CALL SIGN CHAOS; I plan on having a portrait of him in my living room. Fantastic guy.
You can see the Marines soul catch on fire when he gets called a solider.
Yeah, Marines aren't "Soldiers" .. closer to Sailors. Don't worry, it bugs us too.
Sheeit + TEXAStooTALL. why you love dem muhreens so much? More like too much time on ship. MARINES = My Ass Really Is Navy Equipment, ..Sir. ;-) All good fun, were both haji's worse nightmare.
Tom Servo 8yrs...never saw a fucking ship in my career.
It would not be inappropriate for Gen. Mattis to make a statement CORRECTING these lazy & inattentive members of the media or whomever else he is speaking with, & delineate the distinctive difference(s) between Marines & soldiers.

56:58 "Do not fall into pessimism or defeatism or cynicism because all cynicism is is a refuge [that] says "I don't have to do anything about this because after all, it's such a bad situation, I exempt myself from having to work on it."
Would appreciate some context on your post Matt
*As Americans we must not only win, but we must win the right way. You cannot do that without people like James Mattis.*
I wish politicians had his wisdom, and ability to put it into words, and i wish that we, as voters, had the wisdom to hear these types of thoughts. Thank God, that the Marine Corps, develops these types of leaders.

This man can bring tears to my eyes listening and seeing how little I understand about the world and how honorable men deal with the worst the world has to offer.
This interview has greatly increased my view of Gen Mattis.
I listened to this show many years ago and really admired the skills of this general intellectual
very fascinating, I could never guess he would be our next secretary of defense, it's a great choice
Trump pick this General something wrong.
Every time he got called soldier Mattis actually got up killed him, revived him only to sit down and answer the question. Our mortal cameras cannot capture everything this God does among mere men...
+Kevin Mogensen If you put a comma between "soldier", and "Mattis", and between "got up", and "killed him", this comment becomes hilarious.
ok
+Kevin Mogensen Do you think grammar is a fucking game, bitch? General Mattis would hopefully slap you, but at the least call you out.
maybe
This comment made me erect
This is, arguably, one of the most important interviews on UA-cam. The explanation of your intent is critical in all effective and clear leadership. Not only in strategic command, but in your individual daily conversations and arguments.
If you wish to lead a conversation or argument, outline your intent. You will be amazed at how quickly you'll arrive at a solution and also how frequently you'll avoid fights (both physical and verbal).
wise and keenly articulated words from an obviously first rate individual. Cheers to UCTV from India!
This man speaks and everyone pays attention.
Nixon won the white house because he said he would end war. Eisenhower fired the first threats of war on Nam.
It is because of people like him that I respect the United States so much. Love from India.
Ketan Singh
Thank you.
I promise, we aren't all fools. If we were, we wouldn't be leaders.
Same here. Love from Argentina.
Gl Mattis is a voracious Reader
has in his library 7OOO books
He continue to read with passion enthusiam skills
Respect General Mattis
Guelton Mani Naomi

Aside from Harry not understanding that soldiers aren't Marines, I thought what my General said was very interesting. Semper Fi
Raymond Navarro indeed, soldiers tend to avoid eating crayons
lmfao
Watched the whole interview. First time I've heard the man speak and I'm impressed.
He's so right when he mentions building coalitions and using statesmanship and diplomacy before resorting to warfare.
If you're going to invade a country, and destabilize the whole region, you'd better bring an army of doctors, plumbers, electricians and administrators in your wake. You break it, you buy it.
As a military man being a statesman; remember that as it stands the USA acquires, gets, receives, commandeers, nothing but debt, wounded, killed (Murdered)and loss of authority so that huge global Conglomerates may receive vast amounts of tax free, morality free profit.
It's hard not to very impressed with General Mattis. He is am intellectual war fighter.
The best generals are intellectuals, sadly, they never become famous.
What an impressive man. How lucky to have him and what a truly fine model of soldiering. Thank you for your service and I truly hope your legacy with the Marines continues.
minute 31 is awe inspiring wisdom.
All my life, I loathed the idea of a military, of generals and other officers dictating where troops should go to die.
While I'm still not fond of the idea, I can't help but think that my life would've turned out vastly better for myself, had I at least gone through training, gaining a valuable perspective, a stronger body and mind, and more respect for others in general.
This man has my sincere admiration.
Everyone who has gone through military training, whether they were an eager volunteer, or were dragged through by their hair kicking and screaming, has said they are a better person for the experience.
@Joe Freeman Well done, I envy your strength.
America and the world would be in good hands if more intelligent people with morals and values like Mattis were in charge.
Gen.. Mattis for President!
THANK YOU MY BROTHER FOR WHO YOU ARE AND THIS INTERVIEW. I CERTAILY LEARNED A LOT BY IT.THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THIS COUNTRY.
Just hearing him makes me want to go and talk to a marine recruiter
Lol I love how Mattis keeps emphasizing Marine in his responses every time this guy calls him a soldier.
rambosperm it dose not look good to throat punch a interviewer.
lmao true
@@zurechtweiser thats a hard negative. Marines are Marines they fall under the naval command but have their own seperate branch. A Soldier is a rifleman in the Army. Completely different branch culture and attitude and command
Marines and Soldiers are not that different except Marines are the first special forces in current warfare
jo noname ..oh, BUT it CAN, depending on THE ‘interviewer’!
Marvelous interview - fascinating guest, excellent questions - thank you both so much!
Jim Mattis was very open about many things and it's a real tribute to Marines and those in the Armed Forces of his desire to make this country a better place. For the Marines out there, he is a modern day Chesty Puller who knows how to rouse his troops and get people on his side to accomplish the mission at hand.
GEN JAMES N MATTIS -sincer domn! Atât de înțelept, un lider dedicat națiunii, nimeni nu înțelege ce spune, politicienii sunt sub, nivelul său.
This man makes America great.
Can he be President? General Mattis sounds sane, intelligent, thoughtful and honorable...qualities that are sorely lacking in PEOTUS. I hope for the sake of our nation that he will bring these qualities to the upcoming administration and that his voice will be heard loud and clear.
If he had the wits to chose this man i believe his intelligence is just fine.
Respect from Thailand.
Best pick possible for SOD. A FRONT LINE COMBAT GENERAL
I cant't get enough of this guy
Admirable of General Mattis to sit here talking to the pretentious Professor. Mattis, a first rate warrior
heightsofsagarmatha Well Mattis was the head of CENTCOM...He'd be underfire from the government and Media when someone majorly fucks up.
+heightsofsagarmatha Adapting, and overcoming. He is using this platform to get his message out, no matter what the terrain ! Politely as well. A true Marine.
A great interview... thank you for posting this
I love GeneralMattis !
Mattis for president 2016
Brian K better 2024
Mattis 2020!!!!!
He’s much too sensible.
Never get tired of listening to this MAN.
This folks is a great leader ! I am old and broken but if he asked I would gladly grease up my old M1 and stand with his troops to the end.
has this guy got a book, he seriously needs to write a book or give lectures and speeches
jetski Dex
He has written one. Warriors & Citizens: American Views of Our Military
FYI I wouldn't exactly call it light reading
I believe he helped write the manual on COIN which was later revised by a team led by Petraeus and including McMaster. He was also one of the primary authors of the 2003 invasion ;)
Sir Mattis has already edited a Book
MINDFUL THAT THIS WAS DATED, I. E. 5 JAN 2014, BUT THIS IS TOTALLY RELAVANT; TIMELY THEN AND HIGHLY TIMELY NOW IN 2018 AS WELL AS THE DAYS IN THE FUTUE.
Brilliant, brilliant man.
Great men make small men great...faith in men and love of country mark this intellectual and spiritual presentation one for history...
Gen Mattis sounds like a professor, very intelligent guy.
Dragi americani! Sunteți cei mai puternici, cea mai strălucită națiune, de pe terra pentru că se nasc la voi, oameni precum excelența sa James N. Mattis, care schimbă lumea și mersul ei, în bine. A creat pace pentru secole!
Mattis for President. Not Joking. He is who we need.
I like that he pointed out that Nimitz has a lecture series.
Out Standing, Sir.... Thank you, Sir.... " Semper Fi "
Great interviewer and great interview.
Thank you.
I was president of the library club in school and learned so much.
Amazing person! First time I hearing him.
excellent interview. Mattis is the man!
at :56 Mattis is looking that Berkley hippy frootloop up and down with a death stare
+sarge712 However, still polite, and willing to share information. Marine Corps values. Adapting and overcoming is not just for the battle field!
Gen James Matriz
Felicitaciones , inteligente
Lo amo y admiro . PERU .
What an awesome general...
This is a great man. Nothing more nothing less. ( The man in the arena never made more sense )
If only our politicians were as intelligent and succinct as this gentleman.
But they are not
Politicians are not trained to think strategically.
We're Marines Not Soldiers -_-
Doesn't CENTCOM encompass all the branches?
Ben Clark he is an intellectual, he doesn't want fighting among the branches.
>Berkeley
>intellectual
HAHAHAHAHA
ben the public really has no idea of the history of the oldest fighting force in the United States so you have to forgive there ignorance. Signed a Father of a Corporeal at Camp Lejeune!
Holy shit, this is like listening to Leonidas explain how he runs his army. Incredible
My generations Patton. Proud to have served under him.
I love you General Mattis. I love this conversation. I will work for you for free, I would love to hear your stories.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Wish him well General Mattis❤
such a well reasoned man all around.
Glad to have him as my CO...Semper Fi
Great words.
What a great man.
truly great general marine communicator and human being possible president 2024 truly grateful to have this man represent and protect America and the lives of our young sailors and soldiers GOD BLESS GENERAL MATTIS
Incredibly annoying to hear the interviewer refer to the General a soldier over and over. Harry, how about next time you prepare for an interview prior to dragging a national figure in front of a camera. Words have meaning.
My general!
Love General mattis !
Gen Mattis is a Hero in a way to me. I admire his intelligence. and i will note his purple tie too. Sir you changed waves of war. i went against a ltcol and lost (ish) but he needed it. regardless sir you make Marine life worth it. i doubt anything i did would disappoint you
Mattis is my man crush.
most intelligent man I ever heard speak
Mattis 2020!!!
Jim is a kind hearted guy.
Great library.
He has a wicked sense of humour!
Let the enemy make the first mistake. Then we can underline that mistake...
Gostei!
James Mattis was born in Pullman, Washington in 1950.
The man. The myth. The legend.
My own paraphrasing: respect everyone's dignity, be courteous, be professional, but always have a plan to kill every last motherfucker in the room.
Gl Mattis has the passion for Excellence
With a brilliant intelligence, and encyclopped
He is quoted as the most educated personality that has ever occupied the Pentagone
where he had the largest office
with a collection of 7OOO Books
Collection that were unfortunately lost while he had lieved the Pentagone
How I wish I could have grabed some volume of the Roman Empire
Great interview w the mad dog
my role model
"Do what your in there to do and let God sort out the rest of it" EXACTLY..
#Mattis2016
that knife hand!
27:43 War, war never changes.
Nothing could take you away from my heart I promise
We're all afraid of somerhing and Iam afraid of losing you
You are more of something and I'am afraid of losong
you are more than just another person to me. That I know
He was like this song that I loved the second I heard it, it
made me dance anD I never dance
Sometimes we have to do stupid things
to realize how much we love someone
I was a Hospital Corpsman with the Fleet Marines from 68-70...2nd Med/3rd Shore Party....Discharge via 5th Mar Div...I lived with Marines during War....What I remember was low morale, racial tension, drugs, & no one liked the uniform...Many Grunts were Drafted into the Green Machine, & they weren't happy....Today is different....I hope👆🇺🇸✝️🇺🇸👆
Un general legendar!
James Mattis 👍🇰🇷
47:00 (Tongan Marines) Made me fricken cry. Oorah!
kc koellein, in another interview he mentioned them, said part of them were on guard while he slept, and that he slept well.
He also told of an young American in a fox hole with one of their young guys, how they communicated with hand signals because they had different languages.
He seem proud of how they worked so well together because they had the same purpose.
Chaos was/is an amazing leader. Damn few better than him. Semper Fi General.
Wasn't "Chaos" a board member on Theranos.
Matis!!!
Why can't we have men like this in the Oval Office? Integrity matters.
“Visit the Navy-Yard, and behold a marine, such a man as an American government can make, or such as it can make a man with its black arts, -a mere shadow and reminiscence of humanity, a man laid out alive and standing, and already, as one may say, buried under arms with funeral accompaniments, though it may be, -
"Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note,
As his corse to the rampart were hurried;
Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot,
O'er the grave where our hero we buried" (Thoreau).
