Gen. Mattis was my battalion commander in 1/7 Marines in 29 Palms, CA, i 1991. What a great Marine. I went to war with him, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and I think he is one of the best in the USMC leadership. Cheers!!!!!

He had file cabinets in his office that were open to the Marines. If you wanted to know how the Turkish infantry attacked trench positions during WWI, he had an article or book on the subject.

xpictos777 Marines are encouraged to read, self-educate and self-improve, from Boot Camp forward. Always have been. General Alfred Gray, as Commandant of the Corps beginning in the late 1980's formally instituted a reading list by rank. However, the Corps as an "expeditionary force in readiness" may be sent into any clime, any place, any time, to deal with a totally unpredictable situation that cannot be preplanned for. This is why the Corps has always greatly valued the individual's who constantly self-educate, and who can "think on their feet" and act. Intelligence lacking the courage to act, or physical fitness and ability to act cannot control and affect an unpredictable situation encountered. This is why the U.S.Marine Corps is one of the most unusual, yet most capable, of the world's military forces.

What a wonderful man. I’m writing this during the Trump campaign for re-election, 2020. The contrast between these two men cannot be overstated. Reading, knowledge of history, sense of chivalry (does DJT even know/understand this word?), understanding the enemy is also human (from Nimitz), how to lead, etc. The entire interview was so inspirational. Such character, such a role model. Politicians: sit up and take notice.

I'm in Africa and like international politics a lot. Gen. Mattis is a great leader. I came to know him for his love of knowledge and that he conveyed 7000 books to operational grounds.
I have ordered for his book, CALL SIGN CHAOS; I plan on having a portrait of him in my living room. Fantastic guy.

This is, arguably, one of the most important interviews on UA-cam. The explanation of your intent is critical in all effective and clear leadership. Not only in strategic command, but in your individual daily conversations and arguments.
If you wish to lead a conversation or argument, outline your intent. You will be amazed at how quickly you'll arrive at a solution and also how frequently you'll avoid fights (both physical and verbal).

He's so right when he mentions building coalitions and using statesmanship and diplomacy before resorting to warfare.
If you're going to invade a country, and destabilize the whole region, you'd better bring an army of doctors, plumbers, electricians and administrators in your wake. You break it, you buy it.

All my life, I loathed the idea of a military, of generals and other officers dictating where troops should go to die.
While I'm still not fond of the idea, I can't help but think that my life would've turned out vastly better for myself, had I at least gone through training, gaining a valuable perspective, a stronger body and mind, and more respect for others in general.
This man has my sincere admiration.

Gen Mattis is a Hero in a way to me. I admire his intelligence. and i will note his purple tie too. Sir you changed waves of war. i went against a ltcol and lost (ish) but he needed it. regardless sir you make Marine life worth it. i doubt anything i did would disappoint you

Jim is a kind hearted guy.
    Great library.
He has a wicked sense of humour!
Let the enemy make the first mistake. Then we can underline that mistake...

My own paraphrasing: respect everyone's dignity, be courteous, be professional, but always have a plan to kill every last motherfucker in the room.

Gl Mattis has the passion for Excellence
With a brilliant intelligence, and encyclopped
He is quoted as the most educated personality that has ever occupied the Pentagone
where he had the largest office
with a collection of 7OOO Books
Collection that were unfortunately lost while he had lieved the Pentagone
How I wish I could have grabed some volume of the Roman Empire

Nothing could take you away from my heart I promise
We're all afraid of somerhing and Iam afraid of losing you
You are more of something and I'am afraid of losong
you are more than just another person to me. That I know
He was like this song that I loved the second I heard it, it
made me dance anD I never dance
Sometimes we have to do stupid things
to realize how much we love someone

I was a Hospital Corpsman with the Fleet Marines from 68-70...2nd Med/3rd Shore Party....Discharge via 5th Mar Div...I lived with Marines during War....What I remember was low morale, racial tension, drugs, & no one liked the uniform...Many Grunts were Drafted into the Green Machine, & they weren't happy....Today is different....I hope👆🇺🇸✝️🇺🇸👆

kc koellein, in another interview he mentioned them, said part of them were on guard while he slept, and that he slept well.
He also told of an young American in a fox hole with one of their young guys, how they communicated with hand signals because they had different languages.
He seem proud of how they worked so well together because they had the same purpose.

“Visit the Navy-Yard, and behold a marine, such a man as an American government can make, or such as it can make a man with its black arts, -a mere shadow and reminiscence of humanity, a man laid out alive and standing, and already, as one may say, buried under arms with funeral accompaniments, though it may be, -
"Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note,
    As his corse to the rampart were hurried;
Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot,
O'er the grave where our hero we buried" (Thoreau).
