This strategy is called Defang the Snake - where you hurt your enemy's weapon to (hopefully) create an opening, and allow you to follow up so your enemy is unwilling or unable to continue attacking you.
This was taught as one of a set of options depending on time and space available:
1) keeping away is a good option (especially if you can Defang The Snake and damage the arms at the same time)
2) maybe you need to stay in middle range and deal with the next attack, create a distraction before you can follow up with your heavy weapons
3) "if" you can see it in time and make it happen, maybe you can Jam The Gun before it fires...
