    I have this hitch and the triangle plate is a giant pita. But, fix it now by using a 2’ long solid rod that fits in the hole at the bottom of the hitch. I simply put the rod in the hole and pull it straight. Takes 2 seconds. The whole moving my truck around, disconnecting it, reconnecting it wasn’t doing it for me

      where can you get those rods?

    I just take the urethane barrel off and tighten the nut at the end of the chain to rotate the plate far enough to get threads. Does require having a wrench but works.

    I always mark the position of the hitch on the tongue to make sure until back into it at the same angle as when I pulled out.

    Why not connect the one side that is out of angle closest to the truck, connect the chain to the bracket, and using the socket and ratchet, start cranking it down till it’s straight? I’ve done this a couple times and it’s worked well, but curious if there’s a downside?

    Thank you for this video.
    I absolutely love this hitch. My hookup time is a greatly reduced.

    The plate is a pita but way nicer than the bars hands down and lighter/easier to store. I've had some luck with detaching before pulling in and backing up. I thought I read it was bad to use a cheater bar but I'm to the point that this sounds good to me. It would have to be at the plate pin, I don't want to remove the screw pin shackles. Just straighten it before putting plate on sounds best. Now that it is worn in I've noticed the plate will rotate a little easier with leverage. My friction material isn't squeezing out after 2 years and 5000 miles, I have about 1000 lbs tongue weight. Maybe it takes a lot more miles.

    The only reason I unliked this video is because the video minimizes how common and troublesome this situation is. It's very important with this hitch to unhook your trailer and then rehook your trailer to your tow vehicle at the exact same angle. The triangle plate will only have a couple of degrees of play. This is a huge negative to this style of hitch. This can be a very frustrating problem. And how many tools do you want to take with your trailer?

    • @keverett256
      @keverett256 4 роки тому +2

      Agree, especially is you have a site that is not level. A major problem for us and we're looking for any tips to remedy this problem, as it slow us down when we're trying to hitch up and leave . Other than that, we love the hitch performance and weight is an issue for older people and women, so this hitch solves that problem. But, man is it annoying when you can't get the same angle.

  • @f1sk8mm
    @f1sk8mm 5 років тому +5

    Or I can avoid this if I unplug the triangle before backing up?

      Not necessarily . . . drop the plate , but when you turn and maneuver the trailer the ball will turn. When you go to put the plate back on the holes to put the lock in are at an angle, plate or no plate

      After some wear on this system the plate can also be pulled out of alignment if you tighten one side 3-4 turns then tighten the other. You have to pay attention to thread counts.

    I had the new Andersen hitch , and today on the first day of ownership, I had problems with the triangle plate off kilter and tried that trick today and it made the angle twice as bad. Now it’s impossible to use the triangle plate and therefore the chains. First day of ownership.

    Without the triangle attached, put your hitch pin through the hole in the hitch with a little bit exposed. Using a mallet (not metal hammer), massage the misalignment back into place. Don’t do anything stupid. But that hole moves around, that’s how it got misaligned likely in the first place. Takes some force to move it back into place. Your vehicle can provide that force. So can a 3/4” metal rod with enough leverage. Or even a few taps with a mallet.

    There is a much easier way to hook up when the triangle plate is in the wrong position and one chain is too short. I carry 2 short pieces of 1 " electrical conduit - one is 1 1/8" long and the other is 2 1/4" long. When a chain does not reach, I replace the red urethane spring with the required length of conduit, use the aluminum socket to tighten the nut and bring the plate around, replace the conduit with the urethane spring, adjust and go.

    • @rxbristol
      @rxbristol 7 років тому +3

      OK, dumb newbie question. Why do you need two different lengths of conduit? Why wouldn't the longer one work in all situations? I'm buying a trailer and getting the Andersen hitch and want to be ready using your method. Thanks for you help.

    Hi there can you use a D O 35 hitch with the wdh. Thanks Greg

  • @secretspy711
    @secretspy711 6 років тому +5

    couldn't you simply make a "cheater bar" tool... a length of pipe that interfaces with the 2 holes in the triangle plate, to give more leverage to turn it

    • @delta70
      @delta70 5 років тому +2

      that is what i was thinking. Get a bar and weld two pins to align with the holes on the triangle plate.

    • @bernardvance382
      @bernardvance382 3 роки тому +1

      cheater bar can also go thru hole in bottom of towball shaft - a little leverage will move the plate to desired position.

    • @NDSTraveller
      @NDSTraveller 2 роки тому

      Put the cheater bar through both of the shackles that hold the chain on and turn it. Easy peasy.

    Cant you just use the wrench on the nut with the chain attached to the crooked plate and tighten until its straight

  • @markevans3589

    I don't know how it happened, but my pin hole is at a 45 degree. The hole is going straight instead of side to side. What can I do?

    What do you consider a “small” angle?

    • @05rickie
      @05rickie 4 роки тому

      An angle small enough that will let you install the plate with chains,if the angle is to large you will not be able to install the plate with chains,you must move the ball to decrease the angle

    If you press them in at the factory why not press them in straight so angle plate is square with the trailer to begin with? Very confusing to start out with angle plate not square.

    • @toddpunter6190
      @toddpunter6190 6 років тому

      hi ken .when they are pressed in at factory they are pressed in straight . the plate will be turned only after backing in at hard angle .best to pull ahead straight get tow vehicle straight along with trailer and back in . that will solve problem and plate will be straight every time . plate will be off center a bit if even tension is not put on both sides of plate . easy fix just drive a very short distance tighten lose bolt a bit and tension will evened out and plate will be straight . I hope that this has helped you out a bit . have a great day .

      does the shim wedge thing ever wear out,, it looks like neoprene or nylon

    • @keverett256
      @keverett256 4 роки тому +1

      @@woofman4796 Yes it wears down in time, and even squeezes out the top or bottom. There's some tolerance for that, but when we were not sure, we sent a picture to Anderson support and they said it was still fine, but they would send us a new cone and if we choose, we could resit a new cone. We were able to make our trip back home, cone arrived and we did choose to just resit it. We also ordered a spare cone, so we had one, just in case. We had put several thousand miles, in many road conditions, through mountains and plains, for a year. Just to give you an idea. But, I've now seen the cones even worse than ours was and will not grow as concered as we did the first time we replaced.

    I've been looking for the maximum amount of tongue weight this hitch can transfer. No one covers it. WHY? Until informed I will not consider purchasing. FYI 8000lbs tandem hooked to 3/4 ton Avalanche

    • @thereplacementfordisplacement
      @thereplacementfordisplacement 4 роки тому

      I have been putting 1000 lbs tongue weight on 2006 3/4 ton Duramax with a 7600 lbs toy hauler for 5000 miles with no serious wear, the friction material is still in place and looks new. I don't leave it on the truck when not using the trailer and never tow without hooking up the chains. Recent CAT Scales data comparing with/without chains tensioned show I only transfered 100 lbs to front axle, 100 lbs to trailer tandem axles and lightened rear truck axle by 200 lbs. Between empty truck with/without trailer hooking up trailer takes away 440 lbs from front and increased rear by 1560 lbs. Weight distribution got me within spec for my hitch. I plan to do more optimization of packing but I was surprised how little it moved static weight. The hitch must do lots more work when moving.

    Good video thank you. One question: to straighten the plate why not just hook the chain up on long side and tighten? That is use the chains to move the plate back into position. Seems simpler.

    i was actually thinking about buying this hitch,watched the video on replacing the friction material now watching this video on the triangle plate,looks like more trouble than what its worth and this hitch is not cheap,think ill pass.Now i see they have a newer revised hitch and triangle plate,this newer version has a retainer plate on top of the friction material keeping it in place and the triangle plate has been revised as well,i think i will give it a try

      It’s still a pain that the lining up has to be so precise. Towing 3,000 miles has become very stressful every time I want to disconnect and reconnect.
