  • War in the Middle East, war in Ukraine, migration, rising prices, and more - plenty of reasons for Germany to worry, and just as many to take action.
    Following the collapse of Germany’s governing coalition in the fall, early parliamentary elections are now due to take place at the end of February. DW reporters Oxana Evdokimova and Carolina Machhaus traveled around Germany, speaking to people who are worried about what the future holds, but who are also tackling and helping to solve problems. According to one survey, the cost of living and the gap between rich and poor are particularly problematic in Germany. Food prices, for example, have risen by around a third since 2020.. Munich food bank founder Hannelore Kiethe says that demand has been rising ever since its founding. Affordable housing is another issue that concerns people in Germany, especially in the big cities. Christa Lippmann has founded a housing project for single women, with success. Dietmar Kibbel is concerned that Germany does not have enough skilled workers to get the economy moving again and is involved in a program for applicants to qualify as train drivers within a year - a highly skilled profession and one that is highly in demand across the country. It is an opportunity for Abdullah Alyaqub, who fled his home country of Syria ten years ago and hopes that his new job will give him more financial security.

    It is not surprising that so many countries are moving to the extreme right. If citizens feel that they are falling behind, that the system is not working for them, and newly arrived people are getting benefits and housing, they will vote differently.

      For a start you need to get the phrase "extreme right" out of your head. These people aren't that, generally their honest, hard working, native citizens who love their values, love their country and have paid their taxes for years. The sooner people realise that then the sooner problems can be addressed openly.

      The internet and social media algorithms are spreading harmful messages and brainwashing people. The reality isn’t about immigration-it's about the growing influence of the wealthy, who manipulate public opinion and shift blame onto others. I lived in Germany in 2023 for a few months, I could not get the common health insurance because I didn't have one in the country I moved from (Estonia). I also couldn't get the usual private insurance because I was under the income limit so basically all I could get was a temporary "expat" health insurance that covers only new things and is valid for max few years. I was surprised to find out the country was a bit backwards in many aspects, byrocracy with things like registering your address requires letters from landlords, when calling health insurance company that says they specialise in expats, nobody speaks English at the customer support phone number, shops are closed on Sundays like it was still 1804 and everybody pays in cash for their doner and half the people don't talk English.
    There is a lot of modernising that should happen in that country if they wish to keep up.

      Not sure why they should immediately give you healthcare if you hadn't had previous coverage? The idea is to stop someone come over and immediately start claiming, it's normal also in Austria that there is a 6 month waiting period (I got caught by this as well).
      My solution in Austria was to find a friend to hire me for a bit (did some hours on his companies' website), so immediate full cover, and continue contracting.
      Regarding speaking English, all laws and stuff are in German, not sure why you expect that they have to speak English, just a case you're lucky if they do.

During an emergency, it is a nightmare, as these guys fix an appointment 2-3 months from the day of booking one, the fear is one may or may not be alive until then. I live in Munich city centre, paying more than 23€/per square meter for our unfurnished apartment. Our landlord wants to bump this up to over 24€/per square meter, simply because he can as the rent is an "index-linked rent" (indexmiete) that can rise with inflation/CPI. what does everyone expect when you help all the new people but ignore the others? And giving some scraps to people that have gone homeless isn't helping them, it's insulting them. Helping would have made sure they didn't go homeless in the first place.
    Stoping flooding countries with foreigners when you can't even solve the internal problems. All that does is create more, and more complex, problems that now need to be solved.

    • @app.lebyte
      @app.lebyte 3 дні тому

      The internet and social media algorithms distract people from taking meaningful action, often shifting focus to divisive issues and scapegoats. The real problem is the growing influence of the ultra-wealthy in politics, who fund parties that cater to their interests, exacerbating wealth inequality. They control major resources, from real estate to industries, and exploit the environment without regard for sustainability, all while paying us workers meager wages.
      The uwealthy’s lifestyles-many property, private jets, yachts, and massive consumption-also contribute to immense carbon emissions, far higher than the average person’s. Their unchecked indulgence exacerbates climate change, while the majority of people are urged to cut down their carbon footprints. The solution isn’t to blame marginalized groups, but to demand stricter laws that limit the influence of the rich in politics. Only by reclaiming democracy from the wealthy elite can we address the problem common people face.

The economic system that we have been living in for generations is broken. The corporate's mentality of 'profit must grow higher every quarter, every year' is no longer sustainable, etc. etc.
    There's no way to fix this without the 10% at the top of any given society losing out. Solutions are pretty clear but nobody is willing to make the hard calls.

The social media algorithms and media distract people from taking meaningful action, often shifting focus to divisive issues and scapegoats.

    What ?! 1380 E in Germany is risk of poverty ? Can't be, 1380 as a single is more or less okish, one can make ends meet (if they own their apartment). Even if they don't own their apartment, but they are willing to move on the outskirts/suburbs and pay 500 E or less, the remaining 880 should be fine, IMO. @2:33

    Economically left, socially right parties are going to help this situation - curtail the material inequality, enrich and strengthen traditional German ethnicity. Where is the evidence that more skilled workers are needed? Perhaps it's a demand problem. Where's the evidence that locals can't fill the skills gap if there is one? No stories of homeless men. Some bias here methinks.

    • @D1eterVl
      @D1eterVl 4 дні тому +2

      What are you talking about? There's plenty of evidence that more skilled workers are needed and locals can't fill in the gap. It's simple demographics. My dad and mother have plenty of brothers and sisters. I only have one brother and one child at the moment. My brother and his girlfriend don't want children. Do the math. Ofcourse, technology can somewhat counter tis demographic problem, but it has its limits.

    • @saimoncole
      @saimoncole 4 дні тому +1

      @D1eterVl This may be true if you think economic growth is a prerequisite to prosperity, but it sounds like you're swallowing mainstream media dogma rather than counting the number of local unemployed and underemployed - i.e. the participation rate. With stable or declining population there is less demand. That's good for the planet. The aging demographics transition (that all post industrial countries go through) brings with it benefits such as more jobs in the caring sector and longer working life opportunities. But how often do you hear of older people having a hard time finding a job?

    • @D1eterVl
      @D1eterVl 4 дні тому +2

      @@saimoncole I'm following scientific research papers and demographic numbers. I don't think that economic growth prerequisite prosperity. New benefits such as jobs in the caring sector? That's rather funny that you bring that into the discussion, as Germany (and Belgium where I live) is looking to foreign countries to tackle the nurse/caregivers shortage. And please, stop making this 'you swallow/believe mainstream media' assumption when somebody comes around with a different opinion than yourself. It's getting old and it really doesn't add anything to the discussion.

    • @saimoncole
      @saimoncole 4 дні тому +1

      @D1eterVl Well I'm glad we agree that growth is the prerequisite for prosperity. 👍🙂 Just because Germany and Belgium is looking to foreign countries for workers in aged care isn't confirmation that there aren't enough locals to do those jobs. It's confirmation that that solution is the one favoured by those in government. It is confirmation that they prefer cheap foreign labour over wage rises and a tighter labour market. Young Germans and Belgians are willing to do the work for wages that keep up with prices (especially of property). Fewer foreigners push property prices down.

    In the USA we have policies to increase the supply of affordable housing where the developers commit to setting aside a certain percentage of apartments for people making less than the median income. The rental price will always be set to a certain percentage of the median income for the next fifty years or something. Price caps and other regulations don't work. Rents are high, do not think you can rent a house for less then 1.000 euro's in many western European cities. Social housing is privatized and many are sold off to wealthy real estate companies. In Berlin a popular referendum demanded the expropriation of all capitalists who own houses for profiteering. But the Berlin City Council refused to carry out anything that will harm the private ownership of houses. This is why rent prices are so high, because many houses are owned by just a few real estate companies who keep prices high for profiteering and greed.

      In 1933, Germany voted for Hitler because of poverty and desperation. However the Nazi's only won 43% of the vote. They were able to take power thanks to the far-right conservatives of the German National People's Party. This is why Hitler won power, he was backed by the party of the conservative establishment.

      @lukemurray4950 No it would not be the smart decision. They´re practically Thatcher level neoliberalists mixed with a strong facist and racist core. CDU is neoliberal but still social democratic in it´s core.

      The social media algorithms and media distract people from taking meaningful action, often shifting focus to divisive issues and scapegoats.

    DW's optimism is touching, but useless. Germany 🇩🇪 is just an American colony. It seems perfectly natural to me that it should follow the path of the metropolis. The populations of vassal states can hardly escape the temptation to reproduce what the dominant population has done politically.

    “Cost of living is so high”.
    Truth is people want to work in supermarkets parti-me and live downtown Viena or Berlin with a view to a beautiful park. Completely unrealistic.
    Social media completely corrupted peoples realistic idea of economic parameters and good life standards.
    The video shows how many live below 1.000 euros a month, but what is the trend in the past years? Has this number grown? If so by how much? How many depend on social help compared to 10 years ago?

      If the supermarket worker cannot afford to live in the area the supermarket is, the price of living is too high.
