    Assalamualeykum
About Adam (as) being taught the names of all things, the explanation that's resonated with me is that humans have the ability to think abstractly... Allah swt blessed us with the ability to "generate names" - to take complex ideas, concepts, structures - assign them a name, and be able to then build upon those concepts and ideas more easily vs if we had to think through the details of everything all the time.
"Naming things" is fundamental to the way we think - and it's what differentiates us from other creatures, it's our defining trait, it's what allows us to be Allah's vicegerents on earth. It's what gives us our potential for poetry, art, beauty, the ability to appreciate the wonders of creation and glorify the Creator - it allows us to rise above an instinctual base level of thinking to engage with more complex thoughts, and it's what gives us great potential as a species...
And so He swt uses that as a means of illustrating to the angels that humans aren't just violent base creatures, but have the potential for so much more... The angels "concealed" the positive potential and focused only on the negative.

Assalam Alaikom Waramatullahi Wabarakatu. May Allah SWT reward you all and your families for this well needed and informative book club. It is just what I needed. As a revert, I have been seeking knowledge and sometimes I feel people can be gatekeepers. I am seeking knowledge to bring me closer to Allah and my own interpretation may not be adequate as I am still learning. Sometimes, I feel as if others do not want me to learn and strengthen my Imaan. I am a student of knowledge but feel as a revert, there have been many obstacles for me attempting to lead me away from bringing me closer to Allah, and I get tired of fighting, Astaghfirullah. The months leading up to Ramadan were horrendous, Alhamdulilah for Allah SWT testing me, opening my eyes and making me stronger. Yet, I am still tired, Astaghfirullah. I also find as a woman, it is harder to find knowledge as a revert. The men have it made, Alhamdulilah. The brotherhood is strong. The way the Qur’an is explained(in this book club) is clear and concise. It is quite thought provoking and helps me get in depth when considering the messages and lessons given, Alhamdulilah. It is exactly what I needed to keep me on focus, and supplement to what I am already learning. I asked and prayed for Allah to bring me closer to Him and the proper knowledge to deepen my understanding. Yesterday I was in despair and a notification from Nouman Ali Khan brought m e here(may Allah continue to reward and bless him and his family), Alhamdulilah. I downloaded both apps and I’m following along and reading everyone’s contributions and Qur’an. So much information given here. One of many parts that stood out to me 30:18

My understanding to why Allah has taught the names and qualities to human beings is that human beings and angles both have intellect but Allah gave an additional quality of creativity only to human beings. The purpose of making human beings creative so that they survive on this planet. So after coming on earth the human creativity evolved and we can see it on peak in our times.

I was thinking why Allah didn't send Adam and Hawa(peace be on both of them) directly to earth. Why were they made to stay in the garden? What lesson Allah wanted to teach to our parents and in extension to us? After facing the consequences if we reflect on what happened with humility than we can understand Allah's wisdom and His mercy and become humble. This is the lesson from the story of our parents Adam and Hawa ( peace be on both of them) they humbled themselves and Allah gave them the words for seeking forgiveness.

"When Allah (swt) taught Adam (pbuh) all the names", It should not be taken in a strictly literal sense or to be looked at with a very simplistic or a superfluous view, In my humble opinion what it means is that in order to "learn the names of all things" one has to first attain the ability to speak, In other words Allah (swt) first taught him how to speak and it is only possible to have "Learnt the Names of ALL Things" after one has learnt a LANGUAGE !! Language is one of the greateat blessings of Allah (swt), it is through language that we humans have attained the status of the sentient beings of the highest order thus being the most complex being in the Universe !!

    • @quranreflect

This is a plausible approach to it, although it remains to be clarified why the faculty of speech was demonstrated in response to the angels’ question (and don’t they have language as well?).

I had a thought about maybe why Allah created Adam (as) first in Jannah. Allah first taught him the names of all things which is equipping him with knowledge that he would need in this earth. He had to learn before Allah could send him here. Like how we go to college/university before heading out into the workforce. I know Sheikh Sohaib mentioned the names of Adam's offspring but I thought of it being the names of all things, animals, plants, languages...etc. These names are similar to how when we go to school we are taught textbook definitions because it doesn't matter what you study it all comes down to learning definitions. However another part of learning is experiential and so Adam (as) had to experience first hand how the devil will try to do anything to get him (and all of us) to slip. Through this, Adam learns tawbah which is something we must be engaged in frequently as we have an enemy who will stop at nothing to see us burn. All of these were needed before Adam came down to the real testing ground- here in the dunya. With this knowledge he is able to teach it to his children.

May Allah reward you Dr. Sohaib and everyone who is involved in this and even watching this also. Ameen. A great step, especially for the current Muslim culture where many of us have not found the time or motivation to understand the meanings of the Quran from cover to cover.
Also, as a recommendation for future episodes (since I noticed something wrong in this episode), it would be good to be a little more careful with the English captions that appear at the bottom (as the brothers are reading the translations).
For example, during the reading of Surah Al-Fatiha, there was an instance in which the words at the bottom stated, "The Lord have mercy" ... but, it should have been, "The Lord of mercy."
Also, in the reading of the translation of Al-Fatiha, the words stated, "Most of the Day of Judgement," but it should have been "Master of the Day of Judgment."
Also, in one part (during Al-Fatiha again) it said: "It is you. We worship, it is you. We ask for help." But the periods after the words "it is you" each time shouldn't be there.

I started hunting certain words and the number of accuracies in each section bearing in mind the main subject. Example
Al fatiha contains the format that Allah expects His servents should approach Him with their Main demand which is guidance. This is as If He, His Majesty saying praise me with these words and promise Me to serve Me alone and demand Me guide you all ..... this is what satisfies Me with you all.
Now I fellow every variant of هداية and it's opposite.
Likes wise, the word هبوط since it indicates degradation.
It started with Adam then bani israil. Both were in a blessed location with plenty substance without effort . As they were down graded, a line to upgrade them rolled down.

One reason why I think the surah is named the cow is because at the time of Rasool Allah through this story when Allah confronts the Jews yet again. By going into the details. Shown in the silly questions asked by the Jews Allah is highlighting the state of their hearts then!
They were not willing to say labaik to Allah’s order because of the munafiqat in their hearts.
Also!!!! The answers given by Allah show that He is indeed Lateef. That golden cow they revered so much was deity of the Egyptians. By ordering its slaughter Allah was proving to them it is not the cow that is divine. Divinity belongs to Me (Allah) alone. If they had hearts and were able to see and hear they would have prostrated and realised their mistakes.
But as mentioned Allah instead told His prophet peace be upon him to just remind. Fazakir! For Allah knew they will not follow

Wa alaykum assalam, thank you for your concern and suggestion. We would certainly encourage you and all the participants to send salawat upon every mention of the Prophet ﷺ. It’s another question as to how that should be verbalised while reading the Quran translation. After all, it has never been the practice of the reciters in Arabic to insert those words, e.g.
وما محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم إلا رسول
Now, while the translation doesn’t necessarily follow the same logic and ruling, the question of how respect is shown remains somewhat open. I say this so you will be understanding if we don’t adopt this suggestion, as that wouldn’t be for lack of respect.

I read verse 2:62 as those who do not know any better about Islam and the Qur'an but already belief in God and the Last day. Why trouble them informing about Islam with all its diverse competing interpretations and a bunch of opposite sectarian coclusions, it will make their lives more miserable to find the "Real Islaam" while they already belief in God and the Last Day, while they already have a connection with God and already worship him sincerely and do good deeds for His sake? The best thing as a muslim I can share with those believers is perhaps surah fatiha.
I can give an example about me as a convinced muslim who is confronted by a Mormon who is trying to share her faith with me. I said I already belief in God and the Last day, I only worship Him. I have no time or the resources to figure this other "Abrahamic faith" out and find out whether this is the next God's revelation to follow or not. May God guide me.

There are problems with your idea. The Quran is not talking about Islam as full of “competing sects”, rather that is something it says about the People of the Book - so it would not be saying that people should remain upon easy religions and don’t bother them with this Last Revelation! That goes against everything the Quran says about itself and the imperative of following the Last Messenger ﷺ. It is not optional, let alone to be treated as a bother! Why would any of us be a Muslim then, as we don’t belong to an “ethnic” group like the Jews who believe they are uniquely bound by the Torah and don’t have to convey it to others. The Quran is for everyone.

@@quranreflect I reframe the issue so as to point the conversation in the right direction: Is there redemption outside Islam?
I would say yes since there are people who are already doing islam (small "i") without ever having known the Qur'an and the last Prophet. Would I bother them with the Last Revelation? I would say yes and no:
      - No in the sense of trying to convert them to be muslims while they are already doing islam as the Qur'anic Universal message and as all the prophets taught us to believe in One God and act accordingly (pray to Him alone, surrender to Him, do good, do not commit shirk, etc.)
      - Yes in the sense of the Qur'an of being an added appreciative value for them in their doing of islam. Hopefully this will make them eager to read the Qur'an for themselve and let the Qur'an/God guide them further. Many a times we muslims guide in our("-select sectarian affiliation-") way.
Today we muslims are following the same footsteps as those People of the Book thinking "only we are saved " and " splitting into fractions and rejoicing what each group have while reading the same Scripture".
Is it okay to have discussions like this here? I'm obsessed with the Qur'an at a young age and throughout my years I have to unlearn and give up ideas and embrace new (or Quranic old) ideas. That's why I subscribed to Quranreflect.

Today a believer or "Momin" is not someone who believe in any God of any scripture but they must believe in God introduced by Prophet Muhammad PBUH through Quran. Similarly a disbeliever or "Kafir" is not just someone who deny God but he is one also who does not accept Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his teachings.
If anyone who does not get the message of Quran and does not get a chance to know about Prophet Muhammad PBUH in past, present and future then their salvation or punishment depends on their other believes they lived with.
But trust me today all previous religions are corrupted at their core so they surely need to know about ISLAM taught by Prophet Muhammad PBUH to become a BELIEVER. We muslims are also need to follow true teachings of Quran to get salvation. Just being muslim for the sake of it is not enough for salvation.
The Ayah you are referencing has a same context that if after Prophet Muhammad PBUH any follower of those religions Yahud, Nasara, Saab'een, Majusi and polytheist believe in Allah and judgement day as mentioned in Quran they wont have any fear. And one cannot take guidance from Quran without accepting Prophet Muhammad PBUH as Allah's last and final messenger.
To understand this Ayah 62 of Surah Baqarah better you need to see Ayah 69 of surah Maida and Ayah 17 of Surah Hajj and their context and meanings as well.

@@AbdulJabbar-cw6fc Thank you for your reply. I don't totally disagree. I'm sharing my experience: the reply is a good example for reasoning as if we were the Qur'an's first or direct audience in the sense of witnessing the prophet as a person in person without any intermediaries/narrations and witnessing the miraculous revelation first-hand. As Quranreflect mentioned that we can never be it's first audience, hence there is a discrepancy between the reasoning adapt for the first witnessing audience and reasoning by the audience of 1450 years later.
You gave a good example for the corruption of previous religion at their core. With today's historical-critical method, we can find this to be true but this science was not available at the time of Revelation. Instead the general attitude of the Qur'an to the previous Scripture they had at hand, is not of corruption but of *validation* as this was their knowledge and reasoning with the Qur'an's first audience. They only 'corrupted' it with their mouth (see 5:68). Or "corruption" in modern context has the implication of loss of textual integrity while the quranic implication of corruption is changing the Divine meaning of the message regardless of textual alteration. We can us this science for today's (atheistic) audience but I would not use this argument for the sincere people of the book who believe in the Divine message still to be found in the earlier Scriptures. Using the argument of corruption for the eralier Scriptures is not the Qur'anic way.

@@abbasr.7422 Brother dont be confused. In earlier times when Quran was revealed obviously it was not spread in whole world at once so anyone of that time following the true Torah, Injil and Zabur were believers "Muslims" of that time and they may get salvation but only Allah knows who they were. Also we know that true believers of previous books immidiately converted to islam taught by Prophet Muhammad PBUH because they saw the truth, similarity and continuation in his teachings. But once anyone who call themselves Yahud, Nasarah, Saab'een or Majusi they seperate themselve from Islam and Muslim identity so they have different implications than true believers of earlier scriptures.
We dont need any science to know whether earlier revelations were corrupted or not, Quran confirms that some Yahud and Bani Israel or Ahl e kitab made changes in their books but Quran also says that some among them were righteous even when Quran was revealed.
We as Muslims are not responsible of past generations whether they got the message of Quran or not but we are surely responsible of people of our time and future generations that we teach and leave true and correct understanding of Islam so they get benefitted. Who accepts it and who does not it all depends on blessings of Allah SWT as who gets it and who does not.
Lastly i humbly say the message of Quran is beyond time and space. We can read and undestand Quran as if we are its first audience but it all depends if Allah SWT blesses us with that Ilm, Hikma and Noor.
      Jazak Allah kher
