Back to school: Muslim girls battle France’s new abaya ban | The Take

  • French students returned to class facing yet another battle over what some Muslim girls are choosing to wear. This time it’s the abaya, a long loose-fitting dress. Dozens of students were sent home after nearly 300 showed up to the first day of classes in abayas. French women have been here for a while now: head coverings, including the hijab, were first banned in public schools back in 2004. So how will this latest ban impact Muslim students and communities today?
    In this episode:
Loubna Reguig, national president of the Muslim Students of France

Interesting how people see them as foreigners or migrants when the vast majority of them are indeed French with French parents. Plus many of those families (their grand parents...) were brought in by France when France needed to increase their labor class. People really don't know anything about France....They chose to wear a dress that culturally happens to be worn mainly in Arabic countries. French law allows tradition or cultural outfit in schools by law. If it was already forbidden, a new text/"law to come" would not be needed. And since that Text does not even respect the French version of Laïcité and French Constitution it's going to be overturned by the Law just like it was done for the Text regarding the burkini not too long agi This topic is just a waste of time and money for all French citizens.

I’m an atheist, and I think this is so very wrong. The clothes that people wear are part of their cultural identity. I don’t want to live in a world where the government dictates what we wear, either in a you must or you must not fashion. It seems overtly cruel to these people and the ones who are cheerleading it sure do seem to come across as racist or worse. These are children they can’t just up and leave, they fled their homes in a lot of cases because they were getting murdered by their former governments telling them to go home is needlessly cruel as well. Everyone should feel free to express themselves in their authentic way, the only restriction being that your expression stops when it infringes on other peoples. This is a very dangerous road to head down and when the next cultural dress is banned will we let that slide as well.
