      Probably yes.
Sounds like the power unit will be the performance-determining factor at least at the initial period (maybe a couple of years). This will give Mercedes R&D the advantage considering this is their area of strength.
It won't be without competition since these rules seem very convoluted with some room for maneuvering once you have a solid PU.

You're talking like that's what engine manufacturers want to do. It is not. Manufacturers don't want to invest capital on a project that will have little applicability to the larger car market. F1 is a great way to stress test hybrid tech (and EV tech as well). They're the ones the FiA are trying to woo with these regulations... I haven't attended many F1 races in person, but the first was the 1980 race at Watkins Glen. We knew that was going to be the last F1 race there, which motivated us to go. I will never forget walking up the road to the circuit, just as one of the Ferrari 312 T5s ripped by. The sound of the flat 12 was incredible, especially compared to the Ford DFVs. What a sweet noise. It's been all downhill since then. If F1 ever goes completely electric, I'll be done.

I DO care about efficiency. But, I HATE the over-complicated, ridiculous power units used currently...not to mention all of the other electronic gee-gaws on the cars. At this point, the cars are more like wheeled space capsules than cars. This does NOT serve to foster the concept that the best driver wins. It used to be 60% driver/40% car & team...now it's very much 40% driver/60% car & team. This is the wrong direction.
Further, the silly aero packages also emphasize the car/team over the driver.
If it were up to me, things would be as follows:
    1) Engine 1.6 litres, normally aspirated, 8 cyls max, 16,000 rpm max.
    2) NO semi-auto gearboxes. Conventional only/pedal operated clutch - with hand levers for shifting (this is an important driver skill, along with clutch control...which has been thrown out).
    3) All-up car weight, including full fuel, w/o driver, of 550 kilos minimum.
    4) NO anti-lock brakes, or electronic brake augmentation whatsoever.
    5) Aero GREATLY simplified, with funky barge boards and strakes not allowed. NO high noses. Underbody aero allowed, with a very tight limit on usable underfloor surface area and design. Wings allowed, but even smaller than currently. NO moveable aero devices (while the car is in motion). Much more emphasis on mechanical grip.
    6) Full safety features and requirements, as currently mandated.
    7) Fuel capacity 100 litres, NO refueling.
    8) Tyres as current.
    9) Telemetry and electronic adjustability SEVERELY limited.
    10) Movement towards alternate, sustainable fuel. Exactly what TBD. Engine efficiency is encouraged and promoted, with probable reductions in fuel capacity to be executed, year to year.
The whole point being to emphasize DRIVER SKILL and COMPETITION, while getting rid of the "space program" nature of the teams as current - and GREATLY reducing costs. Many competitive teams would be the goal, not just a few. Maximum chance for many different drivers to win - unlike the current system.
Many would argue that the cars must retain technical pre-eminence...and that my proposals would do away with that. So be it. I want the best driver to win - even if the car/team is slightly less than the best. For me, that is the emphasis. Space capsules on wheels, with NASA-like teams monitoring & adjusting everything in real time - does NOT foster that result.

Working down to 550 kg with 100L or ~480kg dry will be about imposible given current safety structure regs. 600 kg dry may still be difficult. 100 liters is only enough to run up to 1/2 or 2/3 of a race so refueling will be needed in that case. I like the idea of 1.6L turbos up to 16k rpm. Lastly, may I ask what you mean by electronic adjustability severely limited?

If the big change is NET ZERO, the yawn factor will continue to increase.
As for battery only EV's, they too are going the way of the dinosaur. EV's will evolve away from the climate destroying batteries to something less dangerous and geopolitically dodgy.
As for the "new combustion" - they are going back to adjustable lean-burn; a technology Mercedes had killed off by forcing EU law because their own version was terribly under-powered and sooty whereas competitors were powerful and clean. However, it's reintroduction makes it clear battery only EV's are now set to disappear entirely by 2030.

What good is merely bringing back the v10s going to do if all that does is ensure a repeat of Ferrari domination all over again? What we actually need is an unpredictability of race results. To that end, we reform the qualifying system such that the more successful teams only have one qualifying session, mid pack runners have two qualifying sessions, and the back markers get the full 3 qualifying sessions, with 1 additional qualifying session reserved in case accidents happen.

Well regulations can not beat physics. To recharge the hybrid system you need to break, or lift off and let the engine breaking do the work.
I see some problems on some of the classic tracks with long full speed straights and not to many sharp corners, like Monza, Canada, probably Japan (but the s secion might yield enough power or the lap). Even some of the new tracks like Saudi Arabia might challenge this new system.
Probably some of the worst Tilke tracks will fare the best for regeneration, which does not ode too well for the spectators.
Just hope not even 2 years are enough for the engineers to iron out technical issues with these planned changes. Otherwise we will see half teh field limping around with reduced power because of malfunctioning hybrid systems or active aero.

However it's been great to see McLaren doing well.High hopes for Ferrari though certainly to improve.Seemingly becoming a drivers championship again rather than a 2 horse race to the top.Push to pass sounds like the best way forward ( great for strategy) possible to lose DRS you'd think. All the best FIA😉

I don't understand why tf they always make f1 slower. F1 should be the fastest cars of all time, not sufocated by stupid regulations. They should give everyone a bit more freedom, restricting only engine displacement. Also, the majority watching f1 are car guys, and i am sure that car guys love piston engines, not electric motors. The hybrid should be slightly assisting the ice here and there, but the engine should be the main source of power of the car, not bring it close to 50/50. Also, they make the cars heavier for what? Cost? Bruh this is f1, ofc the cost is high, if you don't have the budget for f1 go race in the clio cup. For polution? There's only 20 or something of these cars in the world. How much carbon footprint can they have? This is for adverstsing purposes because f1 became one big advertising billboard.

Converting ICE power to electrical power has inherent losses. It always will have. You cannot convert one form of energy to another “for free”
We need to maximise efficiency by removing the electrical power component and push for renewable, zero emission fuel sources like hydrogen.
Let’s face it, Formula E is a flop. It just is and people will not give up their passion for engines that make noise.

  • @MattMajcan

yeah i see big problems coming in the future.. you say that f1 wants to show the continued relevance of internal combution engines. except thats impossible, because internal combustion engines are about to become irrelevant. electrical motors are basically superior in every way and they're about to become the same price or cheaper than gas cars in the next few years, and charging infrastructure is starting to catch up now. f1 is fighting a losing battle if it thinks it can keep gas engines around forever. People are just going to have to get over it. People were probably sad when steam engines went out of style about 100 years ago but people got over it. If people care so much about the sound, put some speakers on the car and stop crying. I hope all these whiners just quit the sport so people that only people who actually care about racing and not pointless superficial crap like what a car sounds like will be left. I love the hybrid era and what its doing for engine technology and the fact that it makes the purists cry is just the cherry on top. the fact that an engine the size of my honda civic can output like 1000 hp is far more impressive than a 30 year old v10. of course, all of these whiners also completely miss the fact that without the hybrid regulations, there wouldnt be any big names left in f1 and the sport would already be dead.

  • @Jvidswtf

I'm becoming less and less interested in F1. I've been watching for decades. The sanitized tracks, ridiculous penalties, fat & lazy cars, dumb cost caps and development restrictions and the push to become FE is killing the "spectacle". Whoever leads after a rule change keeps their lead Thanks to the budget/restrictions. Something drastic needs to happen.

The hybrid era is garbage. The cars are a tiny fraction of f1s emissions. Flying the teams and hardware around the earth is massive. So this hybrid talking point is the epitome of useless virtue signaling. Plus.. if the fuels are synthetic and "green", what's the point of the hybrids anyways?? 1k HP N/A engines and 20%+ reduction in car dimensions is the ticket.
