Not sure why anyone would doubt that. I'm pretty sure the USAF checked him out before letting him on Minot AFB with at least a cameraman and possibly other crew.

That odd smell is old congealed oil that’s probably been sitting there since it stopped flying! I know this because we worked on old Pratt & Whitney J-52s in my AMT school and trust me those things wreaked. The decommissioned aircraft carrier, The intrepid, in New York cities harbor has the same smell all over it as well if you have ever been

B52 gives me flashbacks.. this horrible dream I once had, where I was stuck in this cold, isolated place for years. The forever sound of screeching engines, fueled by the hopes and dreams of all that were there..Then I suddenly woke up and it was all just a bad dream. Still think about that bad drea, every now and then

A video about the B-52 is not complete without some Major T.J. Kong, commander of The Leper Colony (the most famous B-52 in film and fiction) quotes:
“Well, boys, I reckon this is it. New-q-lure combat, toe-to-toe with the Rooskies.”
“Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones. You sure you got today's codes?”
“Goldie, how many times have I told you guys that I don't want no horsing around on the airplane?”
“Stay on the bomb run, boys! I'm gonna get them doors open if it harelips ever'body on Bear Creek!”
“Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.”

G'day Spark, I actually saw this documentary well before November '21. Once you get past the shock of Matthew referring to his audience as "baby", and looking like a dope dealer from Hollywood Central Casting, there is a lot of interest to see in this video, despite, Matthew's first sentence of his narration connecting the B-52 with, "...the United States Army Air Corps...", which, of course, it didn't.
The B-52s surely are a technological marvel that have had untold millions of dollars of refits and improvements, still regarded as cheaper than coming up with a replacement. Those two aircraft, the F-111 and the B-1B Lancer, each costing mammoth amounts of money could not perform all the roles of the Stratofortress.
It's easy to see that this video is dated as nearly all the operational B-52s these days have all 'glass' instrument panels, meaning their main flight control indicators are small video panels rather than analogue dials. Engine and certain other basic components are also the subject of a massive upgrading of these aircraft that, with the latest estimates, should see B-52s in service till 2050.
Even then, it's doubtful that such a large aircraft will be created to replace them all. A hint about the future of B-52s is that out of all the old airframes sitting in aircraft 'boneyards' very few of the B-52s have been chopped up for scrap. The potential for more ' B.U.F.F.S.' to be brought back to life still remains.
I'm glad about that. There is just something so appealing about the design of the B-52, like all great aircraft, they just look 'right'. I don’t think they are B.U.F.F.S. at all. Cheers, BH

This B-52 has had s lot of high -G manuevers as look at the wrinkled outer layer of the airframe! Time for a half life refit!!!!

    • @BigDaddy-yp4mi
      @BigDaddy-yp4mi 2 роки тому

That actual frame HAS been re-skinned and the high-g maneuvers were stopped completely circa 1966, only a couple years after the lob approach was practiced because it was hell on the frames. Wrinkles in the skin are totally normal. The skin stretches during every flight. Had this argument with a relative. The skin is different thicknesses depending on what part of the plane it's on; but the metal HAS to have some give in it or it is HIGHLY susceptible to cracks and metal fatigue. Metal that is more 'elastic' is better suited for airplanes in order to flex, much like the tips of the wings of a passenger airliner you're on....they can safely flex 4-6 feet in EITHER the up or down direction with ease. The wrinkling on the skin is deliberate. On the ground, the B-52 being so long causes the airframe to flex and unpressurized, the metal is relaxed and wrinkles. In flight when the aircraft is pressurized, the wrinkles smooth out. The wrinkling on the sides (and a lot of other places on the B-52) is totally normal and was necessary in order to safely fly and go through pressure and de-pressurization cycles and carry enormous weight. The wrinkles have absolutely nothing to do with metal fatigue being a cause (in what you see in regard to the B-52, though it IS apparent on passenger liners as well, just to a smaller degree because of less loads and such!).

I lived in Amarillo Tx home of Amarillo Air Force Base for the B-52.
In jr. high gym class we were out on the track an dozens of B-52s passed over our school.
Pretty soon parents started showing up at school in a panic to get their kids.
My dad told us he didn't know what was going on, but something was up.
We didn't get nuked, and we were never told why all the B-52s were in the air.
    It was a bit scary.
AFB closed a few years later, and the story went with it.
