The early American battleships all traded speed for range, which, given that the US had recently acquired the Philippines from Spain, was a reasonable compromise... the Pacific is a _really_ big ocean to have to cross with your battleships.
Had little to do with fuel efficiency, fuel efficiency was a high concern for the U.S.N. but not the reason for the design speed. American dreadnoughts stuck with the 21 kt design for unit cohesion. Wyoming thru the Colorado class all had the same speed ranges, turning radius etc. They where designed to fight as a unit to the max. A battleship-centric naval strategy. There was proposals to increase the speed of the Standard type (Nevada thru Colorado) because of how vulnerable a 11kt cruising speed was to torpedo attacks from submarines. However, this would have meant that the New York and Wyoming class ships which where both very new would not be able to operate with the tactical cohesion planned. Also the Delaware and Florida classes would be out of the doctrine as well. Strategy wise this unit cohesion would have made the U.S.N. battle line extremely difficult to beat if engaged in combat. And while you could run away from them the theory and reality was if you run that means you've 'lost' without fighting. Then the U.S.N. pushes on further and again you have to chose to fight or run. Eventually the enemy would be pushed into a corner where they would have to choose to fight or surrender.
@@FranOfBattle All the 'standards' were in service by 1921 and the 'standard type' concept had started in 1912. Naval Aviation really wasn't ready to surpass battleships until 1935. The Washington and London Naval treaties enforced a long capital ship building 'holiday' otherwise none of the standards would still have been seen in front line service by 1941. They would have been surpassed by a new standard type kicked off by the South Dakota (1920)
@@Cragified seems like my point literally stands solid and true considering that Japan nearly completely dunked on us in the Pacific, left and right EMBARASSING the US Navy and Navy Avaitors because theirs a carrier centric doctrine and ours was a battleship doctrine
Biggest problem I've found is the hang time - fire at target, he engages WASD hack and is 3 zip codes from where you aimed at. However, you can drop those shells to the beach on the other side of the island you're looking at - so a stationary cruiser or destroyer hiding behind an island can be vulnerable to heavy shells dropping over the island.
At least NM can share the pain of having 356mm guns at T6 with Fuso and Arizona, and IMO NM has the best arcs on her guns of those three- plus the raw alpha on broadside she puts out at least partially compensates for the lower caliber, as she has 4 guns on Warspite, Bayern, and Mutsu.
I think that's the first time I've heard the Arkansas Beta mentioned in about a year on any UA-cam channel I subscribe to. An excellent ship. Possibly my favourite. Also possibly OP with all the modules...especially if you aren't hounded by a carrier.
The top hull on the Colorado (I know it's in the next video) should be that of the West Virginia after modernization. It had basically a Cleveland strapped to the side in secondaries and better AA
got those descriptions spot on Notser. New Mexico is my most successful ship, but that ROF needs a buff, I think. 35 seconds to 30 would be great, especially since Fuso has a much better ROF with same calibre guns.
Every time a new CA line comes out I move my Iowa commander to my Ark B and for a few days I am a god. It's also the one ship I suggest TAS for slot 6. That detection range sounds amazing but many of the maps it sees are so small that it really doesn't matter; the extra detection range catches many DD's off guard and makes it easier to get past their torpedo spreads.
I still bring my Texas out now and again, not only because she is fun, but because she was up the ship channel from Baytown, so I saw her quite often. She's the slower version of a Cleveland at lower tier games with bigger main guns. -Tavman
Ingame handle "Snasauges". I have a sort of troll setup I use on my Arizona. I have my Steven Segal captain currently on my Pensacola IFHE perks with expert loader. When I use him on the Arizona I spam HE at range then switch ammo to AP when opportunity presents in 8.9 seconds. HE Starts a lot of fires, citadels cruisers while starting fires and punishes dds.
if they had good armor, youd have a point. But they have crap armor for something so big and slow. KM and IJN BBs combine good armor with above average speed, meaning the only thing the US line has to contribute is self defence AA
Question: Would Expert Loader (1/2 speed boost for changing ammo) be a worthwhile skill for a captain of lower tier American BBs. Here's my thought, since lower tier American BBs are slow, they can't always get into optimal shot configurations, nor maintain it for long if they get it. So, they are often forced to take whatever shot they can get. So if they could switch from AP to HE in half the time, they could do some decent damage even though they're presented with a not-so-good shot.
I really don't see the complaints with the New Mexico. She's slow, yeah, but her turning circle is tighter than a lot of cruisers are capable of, and she has a great rudder shift. Plus, she arguably has the best 14-inch guns in the game, with extremely good penetration, even compared to the KGV, if the penetration curves I'm seeing are accurate. And, much like the Nagato, other ships may be able to overmatch your bow and stern, but they can't overmatch a well-angled belt. Also, I use Propulsion over Rudder Shift. I don't think RS is a bad choice, but I find the base value to be good enough already, and I'd much rather have the control over my speed, especially because it means I at least have good acceleration to work with. It's a really nice feeling to just be able to gun it or kill your speed that easily in a battleship. That said, I do get that she's kind of a rough ship if you aren't willing to put-up with her faults. Her guns are inaccurate and take ages to reload, which makes it really hard to justify switching to HE. Not to mention that, even if the ship turns on a dime, the guns don't. She can get into a lot of trouble, and, when she does, she's going to have a hard time getting out. However, in spite of that, I think she's got what it takes to be a fantastic ship in the right hands. She's served me really well in Ranked, and, even if it was some time ago, it was still after the Bayerns and Warspites were becoming common. And, when it comes to facing higher tiers, I'll take her powerhouse salvos any day of the week.
The Ark Beta is borderline overpowered at her tier with no manual airplane drops available. She needed a weakness like that in order to be balanced at all.
Right now I'm stuck at tier 5 with the konig Kongo and the New York and I honestly suck in them I don't have consistent citadel's and my shots don't do as much damage as I think they should I have a rough understanding of armor angling and where to shoot to hit citadel's but I'm still not doing good. What can I do to improve my gameplay
It´s not that, I don´t object to them not attacking ships I but tens of thousands of aircraft where used in WWI, sometimes thousands in a few weeks, that´s why I object to the statement (that admittedly might be a joke).
