      Rix xy - Not always. Lots of people look for an outsider to blame for the shitty condition of their lives or countries too. Don't be too quick to sympathize with them until you review what actually goes on in their homelands. Blaming America(ns) is easier than admitting they do nothing to help themselves. America isn't perfect, but it is far from being only negative, though you'll never hear that on the news. Negativity sells and America is the popular whipping boy at the moment. Yet look at how many people come here to live. I notice that you also don't mention the many nations we have saved from tyrannies and totalitarian governments, through warfare and economics. Nor do you mention the tens of millions of people we've saved from starvation due to the incompetency of their own governments. The United States has done more for the benefit of humanity than any other nation in recorded history.
      BTW - we never banned anyone from "escaping" the countries they live in. We just said they can't come here- a BIG difference. Every nation has the right to accept or refuse whomever they wish. There is no reason that the United States should ignore its own interests when it comes to accepting foreigners. The United States is NOT the welfare program for the world.

    "Mmm-Hmm" is just another way of saying "No problem." Politeness is a pretty common trait in the US(some places moreso than others), so after you say "Thank you" enough times, it just becomes "Thanks," and "You're welcome" turns into "Mmm-Hmm" or "No prob!" It's really the tone that is used that matters.

    most of us in America say "mhmm" after someone says "thank you" in a sense of .."it's not a big deal", "just doing my job" or "trying to help out". being modest you know. great video

      Lisa May Vine I live in the South where being polite and having manners is a huge part of life. here we do say "you're welcome" but no one thinks you are being rude if you say "mhmm" as well.

    • @kikibigbangfan3540
      @kikibigbangfan3540 7 років тому +31

      no, a lack of " you're welcome" isn't rude here. it's how you deliver it I guess. direct eye contact, a smile and a nod of appreciation is accepted as polite form of " you're welcome".

    • @bagheofminhrau
      @bagheofminhrau 7 років тому +19

      Yeah some of us just say "uhmhhuh'' softly to sort of acknowledge and appreciate that we hear you say "thank you'', nothing disrespect for replying like that.

    • @crazitaco
      @crazitaco 7 років тому +10

      This. We do the "mhm" thing because we don't want to come across as rude by ignoring their appreciation, but getting too excited and direct while reciprocating the thank you also makes people think you're being immodest. Its all in the tone of the "mhm" that can make it the difference between sincerity and sarcasm.

    One thing about the United States is the states themselves are almost like different countries in terms of their culture and diversity. On the whole, you are correct that the USA is a very automobile-centric society; this is partly a geographical thing (it's the 4th largest country geographically, but unlike Russia and Canada, most of that geography is inhabitable by sizeable populations), but our history is rooted in both individual autonomy as well as the notion of the frontier. That said, places like New York City, should you ever visit it, is very pedestrian-heavy (but lots of cars, lots of everything frankly; NYC is a different beast). Places like Colorado or Washington promote cycling a bit more than Texas. Glad you enjoyed your stay in our country.

      Amber R - West Texas is a desert and mountainous but there is still a lot of vegetation. East Texas is heavily forested and central Texas has a lot of grassy plains. Southeast Texas is a damp, very green coastal plain. Texas is actually very diverse geographically and demographically.

    Women's clothing sizes don't make sense to anyone. By buying large sizes, you don't have to shop as often, often only once a week. Ranch dressing is everywhere, but some people like other dressings. Many cars in the US are imported from Europe, of course you were in Texas. It used to be common in the US for grocery stores to offer bagging and carry out service, but it is on it's way out, they may bag for you, but you will still have to carry out your own bags. Most people I see respond with "you'r welcome".

    • @jayjenkins9113
      @jayjenkins9113 7 років тому +13

      Sara,
      Glad you said that... after reading all these comments about the lack of bikes and walking I was getting a little defensive. If anyone has ever been to the Pan Handle of Texas, Lubbock is pretty flat and can get really hot.
      You go ridding off into the sunset on a bike or out for a long walk, you might be found on the side of the road with heat exhaustion or a stroke. But, that doesn't mean that all cities/towns in Texas are like that. Down here in San Antonio, we do walk (Riverwalk), ride bikes and even horses. There are also plenty of small, economy-size cars mixed in with our lifted trucks and suburban vehicles.
      Overall, I'm always glad to hear of our European exchange kids enjoying themselves in our country... especially if they are hosted in Texas! I've watched all your videos about your stay and am a little surprised your host family and town let you get away! We love hanging on to fun-loving and energetic people here in Texas and you'd have fit right in.
      Here are some other facts about your host state you can hang your hat on...
      1. Texas would have ranked 3rd in the World for Gold Metals (26) in the 2016 Olympics if it were a country.
      2. Texas would rank 12th in GDP if it were a country.
      3. If Texas were a nation, our economy would be equal to Canada.
      4. Texas is oil country... we raced up above OPEC production from 2009 - 2015.
      5. Texas is first in the nation for wind power installation and number of megawatts produced annually.
      6. Texas has the lowest unemployment rate of U.S, Canada, Australia and Eurozone.
      7. In Texas, there are approximately 313,596 miles of public roads, $.20 gas tax, and 1,415 airports (most of any State) and two of the largest airline carriers (American Airlines, Southwest Airlines) are headquartered in Texas.
      8. Texas has no state income tax (one of 7 states in the entire U.S.)
      9. Texas will be the first state in the U.S. to have state-run gold bullion depository (repatriating 1 billion of Texas gold to our state).
      10. According to the census bureau, 5 of the 11 fastest growing cities (by population) are found in Texas.
      11. Texas has led the nation in Hi-Tech exports, last year exceeding California's sales amount by $6.3 billion.

      Dear Sara , part of the lack of bike riding , where you were , might have to do with the distances people travel from place to place . Also , since it can be so hot , you could end up being a sweat ball long before you got to where you were going :)

      @Sara Guggi. You're exactly right. I live in the town of Baker in the Mojave desert in California, and summer temperatures can be up to 130 Fahrenheit (54 Celsius), there are frequent high winds, I have seen roofs ripped off houses, and the nearest town where you can shop is 72 miles away. I do walk for exercise though, even in the hottest months

    We are patriotic because of the Revolutionary War. We fought hard for our independence and that spirit still lingers 240 years later. We don't use bicycles because everything is so spread out and too far to walk to in the rural areas. Only in big cities do people use bikes or mass transportation. Never been to Italy. Would love to visit Sicily and Tuscany region.

    It depends on the situation, but "uh-huh" is an acceptable response to "thank you".
    It's the colloquial equivalent of "de rien" or "de nada" ("it's nothing").
    I've gotten in the habit of saying "you're very welcome!" But I'll say "uh-huh" if I'm not thinking.

      Manko Kenniwick It isn't the government that we're patriotic to, it's more to overarching American ideals. I think a lot of it comes from WWII. For Europe, that was a devastating thing, they took nationalism and flew to close to the Sun. For us, it was the start of our golden age and we had an ocean between us and the worst damage of the war.

      She lived in rural Ropesville which is outside of Lubbock in the panhandle area. You have to go ten miles to get from the house to a paved road. You have to go 40 or 50 miles to go anywhere. Biking would be your only activity. I was travelling through the desert in Wyoming on a road that was 300 miles between gas stations and anything else. There was an older couple riding bicycles in the middle of it with a small roll of camping gear on the back. They looked burned to a crisp but they were pedaling on. They might have bikers in rural areas like that but not many and they must be dedicated.

      I'm American. I don't rinse my pasta. It removes the flavor & starch which helps the sauces to adhere.
      I'm part Italian. My last name is actually not the original spelling. It's supposed to be Micelotta. I'm not sure when it happened.
      I'm from the west coast; Southern California. A lot of the people ride bicycles to school where I lived.
      I moved to the south over a year ago. I'm on the Louisiana/Mississippi border. They are lacking walking trails, bike paths & crosswalks were I'm at. It's a really small town.

    It's nice hearing that you enjoyed your stay here so much, and fascinating hearing of your impressions. Here is an anecdote people in Italy might find amusing: The first time I tried fixing spaghetti I put the dry pasta in a big pot and added water and salt. After boiling everything for what seemed like an eternity I wound up with something resembling a section of cable, the outer layer of which was starting to dissolve while the inner strands still had the consistency of a truck tire. None of the cookbooks I had consulted had said anything about the water having to boil BEFORE putting in the spaghetti. The person who tried rinsing the spaghetti was probably afraid it was going to get too soft if not immediately cooled. It takes real talent to be able to fix spaghetti correctly.

    the many clothing sizes are I think due to some companies view on what small medium and large is. a girl who wears a medium in misses sizes may have to wear a large in junior's sizes . some ladies have more up top or more curvy than others so they need bigger sizes to fit them. we are a nation of many different races mixed together someone may have the genetics for bigger clothing while they could have a sibling with a different genetic trait making them have to buy smaller clothes because their bone structure is different due to the genes they inherited from their family.when in doubt find the nearest dressing room to make sure it will fit right for you.the only thing they won't let you try on is underwear and I don't blame them for that

    Large sized packages in Supermarkets are doable because American homes are generally much bigger than European homes and therefore have more storage space, and that includes refrigerator space. I think where Eurooeans and Aussies/Kiwis get confused is that these large packages are not intended for a single person in a single setting. They are family/party sizes where there is multiple servings inside the package. Like for instance, a big bag of chips...one person would just need a decent handful of chips for a serving. You then clip off the bag and use it at a later time. Large package sizes allow for periodic shopping instead of daily shopping. People generally only go for a grocery run once a week or every two weeks depending on the consumption level.

    Dippin dots do actually have a reason for being essentially beads of ice cream. There's more surface area and it melts onto the tongue faster to spread across the taste (they actually use liquid nitrogen to freeze it so fast that it's not a block to scoop from.) Plus it makes the serving appear larger than it is having all the air gaps, similar to if you took a couple of potato chips (crisps) and crushed them in your hands then put on top of a bowl of soup or stew.

      Marc Weinberg rinsing noodles depends on how you are gonna use them and if you want them to stick together or not. If you are going to put them straight into your sauce you don't need to rinse. If you are not then rinsing will stop it from sticking together. a rinse just removes the excess starch. if you don't want to rinse I would suggest either butter or extra virgin olive oil to stop the clumping. there are several other reasons to rinse or not which in not going to get into, Google is your friend there. I'm curious to know why she isn't into rinsing. all she said was don't do it. it is a good video though. was interesting to hear what someone outside of America thought.

    I live in Louisiana, which is right next to Texas (right side, New Mexico is on the left side) and we do not rinse pasta. We simply pour it out of the boiling water into a colander to drain the water. Also, I collect guns, as do many Americans. Guns are protected by our Constitution (2nd Amendment), and there are anti-gun people who gun people absolutely hate. Guns protect us from criminals, and from our own government, if the government ever turns on us. Most people in the Southern States owe guns.

    Sara, I am from the US and the fast food Large sized cup from when I was a kid, is now the Small size. It is a bit odd.
    I have never seen employees at the grocery store take bags out to someone's car, even if they were very old. That's very nice.
    Yes, the "Thank you" problem... I think that's part "not talking to strangers", part ignorance of polite behavior and some are just plain rude. When someone does or says something polite, I always try to respond in a friendly, polite way, because people going out of their way to be polite is rare. When someone says "thank you", it doesn't take much effort to be friendly.
    I always say "you are very welcome". It is frustrating that people are just not that nice to each other. I go out of my way to hold the door for other people, at the store, the bank, movie theaters and restaurants etc. I also like to see how many people will just walk away and not even look at you OR say" thank you" at all. It's a problem where I live. I would say one out of ten is too much, It is more like one out of fifteen people, will acknowledge the existence of the person holding the door for them and say "Thank you". I'm also a little hard to miss, I'm 6' 4", but people will pretend not to see me.
    Unfortunately the term "Ugly American" came from somewhere. I wish that wasn't the case, but it wasn't made up out of thin air for no reason at all. I make an effort to NOT be viewed in that way.
    Keep up the great work. I know I'm a year late, but Thank you for sharing!

    Mix equal parts dijon mustard and honey. Drizzle in either balsamic or cider vinegar while stirring until it gets runny enough to be salad dressing. A bit of of salt if you like.
    Also, Taco Bell is no big loss. I would recommend Filiberto's (they are all over the South West) .... but a vegetarian won't exactly find anything they can eat there.

I am also vegetarian and there is lots of vegetarian and vegan options, such as pasta, which i probably have weekly and I have never even heard of people rinsing it! I have never tried funnel cake before or heard of those little ice cream balls. Also I, too, get really annoyed when people don't say "you're welcome" when I say "thank you"

    The confusion on cloth sizes may come from many American clothing brands have shifted to what is called 'vanity sizing', where the fit is actually somewhat larger that what the tag indicates, which makes shopping a bit more of a hassle since since it makes the size you where different between clothing brands.

    Americans love their FREEDOMS! They are so grateful, and appreciative of all those who have sacrificed EVERYTHING so that we can live the amazing lives in FREEDOM, in which we do. It was the United States of America, who "Saved the Day" in both World War I and World War II. There is a saying in the U.S.A. "The Home of The Free, Because of The Brave!" So, yes, we Americans are very patriotic, and forever thankful for the greatest sacrifices of the brave and courageous which is bar none to any other nation. This is why so many flocks to the U.S. on a daily basis. They too, want to experience America The Beautiful, and the American Dream for themselves.

    Sara,
    All my grandparents came from Italy, a little town on the Aegean side about halfway up the boot. I know where Ropesville is because for 2 years I lived in that area and had to drive through Ropesville every time I drove to Lubbock. You're right, they don't know how to cook Italian food in that part of Texas. I saw them rinse the pasta a lot when I lived there. It was as much a cultural shock for me when I lived there. But it was interesting seeing the cotton fields, the oil fields and the vast farms where the fields stretched all the way to the horizon. You understand why they need crop dusters to control the pests. Roswell is interesting, the sky is so clear at night you can see satellites as they circle the earth, and the tornados, wind storms, dust storms and tumble weeds were certainly a sight you don't see may other places. And you learn that a pick-up truck is more than just a vehicle - some consider it a part of the family. It sounds like your experience was good, and places like Ropesville are as deep in the Heart of Texas as you can get.

    I don't know about most people in America but it's true for me and I would think a lot of people. When someone says "Thank you" and you reply "Mmhmm", we don't mean any disrespect at all. When I think about it, the times I get that or do it, it's usually because in my head I'm thinking "Oh, you don't need to thank me. Common courtesy". It's in no way meant to be rude, in my experience anyway. I can see how it could come off annoying though so I understand.

      "Oh, you don't need to thank me. Common courtesy" is the perfect explanation behind the use of "mmhmm". I would still do it even if they didn't say thank you.

    Not saying you're welcome is a way of trying to make you feel less indebted for something. Such as "it wasn't a big deal." It is meant to be something to help keep the person humble. "I didn't do anything so special."

    America is such a huge country that different areas have different habits. Texas loves pickups and cowboy attire and meat. The Northeastern section of America loves the beach, seafood and has a lot more Italian Americans who eat tons of pasta and make it like Italians make it. ( I am Italian American) The midwest of America people seem to like to walk a lot and ride bikes and have lots of cornfields, lol. I don't know, we have such a huge and diverse country that it would be great if you could visit different parts and see how different it is. By the way, Ranch dressing is loved by millions of Americans. :-) You have such a British sounding accent. It throws me off, lol!!! Thanks for you kind comments about America. We love our country, even with all it's flaws, and are glad people from other countries love it too.

    Milk ordinarily comes in Gallons or Half Gallons. A Gallon is 4.5L. And depending on your family size, you can go thru a gallon pretty darn quick. And in some cases people have secondary refrigerators in their garages where they store additional grocery supplies, so they buy 2 or 3 gallons at a time.
    But regarding large sizes (or huge sizes, as you would say), that could be for two reasons. One, they are what we call Family Size which should be self explanatory, or so that we don't have to go back to the market every day or every other day for our food. They are intended to last quite a long time. I think Europeans come over here and see and buy these large sizes food items thinking they're gonna eat them all by themselves in one sitting....um no, that's not what the large package sizes are for.
    And the second reason is because the US produces a ton of the basic food types: corn, wheat, soy beans, and other grains, we are able to make a shit ton load of processed foods. When you don't have to import a lot of your food, you tend to have a lot of it. And for relatively cheap prices. Same goes for the regions that are large producers of oil. Their gasoline/petro prices are usually pretty cheap. In some areas, insanely cheap.

    Cowboy boots and hats originally had a very practical purpose in riding horses to herd cattle. They eventually became fashion in the very places where they were a once a necessity. The Brits can be very patriotic and its that patriotism that saved the world in 1940s .

    First, and most importantly... THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL KINDNESS!!!
    Second, I have no idea what part of Texas you were in so a few things you mentioned confused me. I'm a native Texan and always respond to a 'Thank you' with 'You're welcome.' The response you received would bother me as well.
    Third, I appreciate your thoughtfulness on the gun issue. I live out in the countryside and snakes are a huge problem that you want to handle at a distance, so I do have a shotgun for those instances. I don't get into all the other reasons I hear about, I just don't want to get another snake bite.
    Fourth, and last. There are major cultural differences between the five parts of Texas. I'm originally from South Texas and spent a good amount of time crossing the border between Texas and Mexico and I loved it! I eventually moved to North Texas and was completely lost both physically and culturally. I learned Spanish and German growing up and North Texas is very different in language usage and mentality, which is primarily English speaking only.
    Anyway, I love and appreciate your video! Thank you again!!!
