  • Here is a sneak peak of how Carrocel Restorations restores fine antique furniture using silver leafing. This process is extremely time consuming and requires patience and skill. The piece is first applied with an adhesive compound. After allowing the compound to sit into the wood we then proceed with placing the silver leaf sheets on top of the desired area. The sheet is then lightly pressed and feathered to remove and flatten access materials. Once this process is complete the piece is then sent to be glazed, sprayed, and sealed to complete restoration.

Thank you! Once the silver leafing has settled we proceed with finishing the silver leaf with a coat of dark glaze applied by hand. This helps give the silver leaf some definition as well as that beautiful antiqued look.

Any brand of dark glaze you can get your hands on would be adequate, at Carrocel we use a commerical brand only available to the trade. You can also use different shades of glaze to achieve different results.
As always your comments are appreciated!

I wish he would have taken the video to the completed "finished" product. The silver leaf looked very smooth on the finished product vs the end of the video.

Great video! You make it look easy... but I have a feeling that it's anything but to an amateur. It also looks very delicate to handle.
What would you recommend over top the leaf if you want to keep it a high sheen and clear?? Thanks :)

Why is there no explanation of materials and where to get them? This is the tenth video I've watched here on UA-cam about silver gilding and not one of them has explained anything about the materials and where to buy them, or about technique. Videos like this are a waste of peoples' time and I for one am not amused. And above all, the worst thing about this and at least half of the other videos is the horrible music! Music has no place on an instructional video. We seek out these videos to learn, not to listen to music.

Very sorry for your frustrations! This is not a tutorial or instructional video, its to show our clients the work, effort and time involved in silver leafing to understand a bit more about the process and why the costs can be significant. If there is anything I can personally assist with please send me an email and I would be glad to offer any assistance I can!
