      In a way it is, a woman the artist moved or removed by painting over with landscape - but over time that underpainting was reemerged.

    Hmm. I'm still not sure I agree with Courbet's assertion that only a contemporary artist can convey their time, but I appreciate and respect his perspective more the second time around. "Heroizing humanity" is a beautiful mission and he did a great job of it. He was just passionate about authenticity, I suppose.

    It was submitted to the salon, but did they reject it?

      Blurb808 "The artist's studio" and this painting were both rejected (whereas others of Courbet have been accepted) in 1855 for the Exposition Universelle
      Courbet decided then to open his own salon : "Le pavillon du réalisme"
      Very interesting - you should look this up !

    I really appreciate what was said about a lack of interaction between figures and a lack of focal point. I had never noticed that child lost in thought before this video, I think they might be my favorite part
