CRIO BRU Brewed Cacao: Is this a scam?

This is my second, $33 bag of CRIO BRU cacao in a year. I'm trying to quit coffee and have been looking for an alternate morning beverage routine.
I'm feeling like brewed cacao isn't working out like I had hoped and, if anything, it's reminded me what I didn't care for with my last attempt. I just can't get past the diluted cocoa water experience, especially at $33 a bag.
Maybe I'm not as fancy as the rest of you...
Try it yourself and let me know.
I used to work for this company. They did really import everything & was honestly a fun work environment. It’s in a college town so just a bunch of kids messin around shipping out packages
Hello! As a lover of bold coffee, I too was hesitant about Crio Bru Cacao. However, years later, i will say, cacao has changed my life! No jitters, no digestive upset, and no energy crashes. It holds me over until lunch break on busy work days. To anyone trying this: USE MILK not water for your crio bru. I know- its more calories but you wont need cream and in most cases (like me) you wont need any sweetners either. Brewed cacao with water is very sad to me but milk? Like a rich hot cocoa
Thank you for watching. Yes, I agree with you, but it's just not worth 3x the cost of coffee or a top brand cocoa and doesn't taste as good either...
I've been drinking Crio Bro for years. I love it. I use a French Press, four scoops, let it sit for 20 minutes and add a little cream. It's a fantastic way to start the day.
Thanks for watching!
I've been drinking coffee since Nixon was in office. (I was ten. Started early.) But the past few years, coffee plays hell with my innards, so I've looked for substitutes. Crio Bru is actually pretty good, at least to my taste. But a bit pricey, so I've ordered a kilo bag of Yupik brand cocoa powder.
Hi, do you buy the Yupik beans or powder? If its the powder as you stated, do you measure it like ground coffee?
I make it like we make hot chocolate in Colombia. Let me explain I use the indicated 2 tbs for each 8 oz, but I put the chocolate directly into the water to boil. Once it has boiled I let that stand like for 30 seconds, then I have my cup ready with honey to pour the hot chocolate over. It’s amazing, you get all the flavor of the chocolate. It’s how we drink chocolate in Colombia. You can of course add some cream or milk as you want.
Thank you for watching! You must buy some Valrhona Cocoa powder to have the ultimate hot chocolate experience.
Interesting
Thanks for posting this video. It Doesn’t have to be 33 dollars for 1 1/2 lbs. Order from Crio’s website when they have a sale every major holiday, $45 for 3 lbs. My wife and I drink this every morning for years. Now, Get yourself a French press. For 2 cups: 30 gm crio, 500 gms boiled water. Press after 7 minutes. Important!…add a splash of milk(oat milk), 1/2 tsp sweetener(coconut sugar). And you’re hooked. Oh, by the way, 28 gms to make 2 cups of crio comes to about $0.50 per cup. I think most people can afford that.
Was wondering about the measurements. I took raw cacao beans and put them in my air fryer for 10 minutes and let cool a little then pulsed on high in my vita mix till nicely round, like three times. I guess I used about a tablespoon per 8 oz for those that are interested and let sit for about five minutes. I'm gonna try more roasting next time and longer brew time, someone said to wait twenty minutes. I did add stevia and heavy cream, wow, I like the flavor a lot. I've had like 5 cups already trying the different roasting times. The french press seems like it gives a much better flavor, oh and added a pinch of salt to heighten the flavor more and really did.
Thanks for making this video from one former coffee drink (but still lover) and connoisseur now transferring my skills to cacao drinks!
Thanks for watching!
Good review and I love your vibe! So I actually love Crio Bru ! I agree it isn’t coffee or hot chocolate and I don’t like that they market it as rich and chocolately. It isn’t. But it’s cocao not cocoa. They have a lot of flavors and various roasts types now that you may enjoy more than the original brew you reviewed. The chocolate flavor tastes the best to me. I do also add more grounds than they suggest and let it steep a long time. I use a French press. It is a little pricey and I guess you could buy your own beans and roast and grind them to save money but this is definitely more convenient. I will have to try Yoo-hoo and compare 😂
Sara! Your response is spot on and I totally agree with all you said. Keep me posted as to when you try YooHoo!
Curious about Crio Bru and landed on your video. Thanks for the detailed review. I don't drink coffee, but I love hot chocolate and now I want to know your recipe for using Guittard!
Thank you for watching!
I’m a chocolate FREAK!
I make my Guittard hot chocolate with 2 cups of almost boiling, low-fat milk and 4 healthy spoons of cocoa powder. Sweeten to taste.
If you have a preference, get the regular Guittard cocoa powder instead of the Dutched version. Obviously, regular cocoa has much more flavor and fat and it’s much more delicious!
Try the Valrhona too! It’s deliciously different.
Enjoy!
This stuff is now way at all hot chocolate it’s a watery mess
Have you played with extra brute cocoa? It has a very high fat content (I know, I know) so you can actually stir it into hot water - and there is no bitterness. I am in love. I make my own chocolate syrup with it, and you can really get a nice, dark flavor with it. It would make a very nice treat in small measure.
I am currently brewing Crio, but I prefer the TEO brand, however its always sold out. As I prefer the blend from Tapacula, Mexico. But your video is spot on Crio is ok, but since coffee gives me the jitters and heightens my anxiety I can't drink coffee daily. But do love a cup of Dutch Bros coffee when on vacation.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! I also enjoy my Dutch Bros! Happy 2024!
I like it quite a bit and drink it weekly during the fall and winter. But I think you have give a fair review for someone who is not and over-the-top fan. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for watching!
Just buy cacao nibs and a decent manual grinder. Youll get wayyy more bang for your buck without the processed drawbacks
So nice to see a non-hypster YOu Tube review. How does cold brewing work for this product?
Hahahaha! Thank you for your kind words! As far as cold brewing goes, I haven't tried it with this stuff but I can tell you that in hot water i would recommend letting it steep for as long as you have patience for.
Coffee oil contains high levels of vitamin E, phytosterols, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. They protect the skin from free radical damage and reduce the signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and sunspots or blemishes.
Thank you!
I'm using 6 TABLESPOONS for 16 ounces in a French press.
Okay my wife was in Columbia for a summer and seems to be wondering what makes this any different from coco powder? They add the extra things to it but does that change the flavor any? Seeming like we can grab a solid dark chocolate bar and have us some cacao anytime we want without paying $33. I'd probably be more like to try the shrooms before this.
I totally agree! This Crio Bru will always taste similar to unsweetened YooHoo unless you add sugar and creamer.
It is Cacao, not chocolate.
Like I said in the video, Save $25 and buy some Valrhona cocoa for a REAL treat!
Thanks for watching!
Does it keep you awake like coffee? And how is that French market coffee? I can only find the Cafe du Monde locally
Thank you for watching!
I didn’t feel any buzz and it didn’t keep me up at night in spite of my double and triple heaping spoons and extended steeping.
The French Market is my favorite and it’s available on Amazon if you can’t find it at your local supermarket. Try it and you’ll love it. It has lots of chicory in it so it’s very smooth and dark.
What is the coffee filter you are using?
Hello, sir. Where are you on the new Panasonic LUMIX s5ii? I know you are a GH5 shooter. What about this new model? Are you in? Are you out? Are you sitting out this new release?
Thank you.
Hello!
I recently switched to Sony after enduring disastrous AF moments seen on this video with my GH5s.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned!
@@camerasandcoffee3466 If you go to the camera shop, as I did to try the LUMIX s5ii, you might just want to dump Sony and go Panasonic!
@@howUlikemenow
Actually, Canon recently filed a patent for an 83 megapixel sensor. I might wait and jump on that one!
Where did you find the Valrona for eight dollars? Amazon is $16 thank you.
Hey Lynn! Thanks for watching! I amazingly stumbled across it at my local Walmart at 40% off!
Of course I bought all of it!
First time watching one of your videos, and I am greatly appreciative of your process here. I had been thinking of buying some of this stuff based on the RAVE reviews that others give it, but was hoping for a product that tasted like brewed chocolate, not sad, not quite coffee water. You've saved me a minimum of $16; who knows what I would have talk myself into. Thank you. I look forward to browsing your catalogue of videos.
Thanks for watching!
Yes! I’ve even put 8 spoons of this into boiling water to steep for 15 minutes. End result was a watery, unsweetened Yoo Hoo like drink. Thanks again for watching!
@@camerasandcoffee3466 That's deeply disappointing. I have subscribed, and look forward to learning more about your adventures with coffee and cameras!
They tell you not to use a paper filter, but on their very own web site, they have a video on how to prepare pour-over Crio Bru, and in that video, it is obvious they are using a paper cone filter. But they only use gold mesh for a drip coffee machine. We'll see - when I get my sample pack in the mail I will try my Melita. At least Crio Bru does offer a money-back guarantee.
Thanks for watching. I would definitely use a paper filter for this and ALL brewed products to trap any unhealthy oils. While I'm no scientist, these cacao grounds remain oily even after steeping. See for yourself and rub the grounds with your hands after brewing.
Probably authentic cacao like from embué Cacao or ora Cacao would give you more of a coffee experience than that stuff
Being new to brewed cacao, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I didn’t expect it to be like an unsweetened YooHoo.
Especially at $33 a bag…
Thank you. I will stick with cacao nibs for now
Roast them in an air fryer for 10 minutes at 400 and then grind, amazing flavor with a little sweetener, cream and pinch of salt. I was thinking the same thing so tried this and don't have to pay for shipping.
The only one strong enough for me is the Uber Dark and I use half a cup in my coffee marker with a gold basket. You have to watch it or it will clog your coffee machine. It makes about 8 in the coffee maker. Flavored varieties are not worth it.
Thank you for watching!
@@camerasandcoffee3466 you are welcome! I an thrilled to learn about the cocoa options too. I did find that the larger size bags end up being slightly cheaper but no where near as economical as the grocery store.
That's why I buy extracts & add them instead.
I like you, great video!
Thank you for watching!
I am not a coffee drinker, can't handle bitter flavors well. I'm able to drink the double chocolate flavor of crio bru and enjoy it with some half and half or heavy cream.
It's worth pointing out that the 2 table spoons is for 8 ounces of water, and you just used 13.5 ounces of water. You are not making it much stronger than the directions call for.
Thanks for watching! Sounds like you missed the part where I said that I doubled, tripled and quadrupled the Cacao ratio to water. Still not much different than YooHoo.
@@camerasandcoffee3466 I did miss you say you had tried that. I was only commenting on what I saw in the video. Curious if you tried it with other brewing methods, or letting it steep much longer? I'm enjoying it as I feel like it's something I can actually drink that's coffee adjacent lol. I tried a french press and just find that to be to much hassle / mess and I think i'm going to try your method here. Buy 2 of those and at least 1 will always be coming fresh outa the dishwasher...
@@TK-xn3uf Try my method and let it steep for an hour. I did that and it was an improvement but... At the end of the day, grab yourself some Valrhona or Guittard cocoa powder and REALLY get your Chocolate game up to speed. What a difference without the hassle and a FRACTION of the cost of Cacao.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for another brewing video soon!
Plus he kept saying he's using teaspoons. I'm using 5-6 TABLEspoons for 16 ounces.
the whole point is that its caffeine free, unlike all the other chocolates you made
Thanks for watching. These businesses rely on customers like you to exist. Keep up the good work!
Umm i agree cacao is great but i can get raw organic cacao powder for 10$ a pond.i mix a heaping tablespoons with cbd and 12 oz cup of coffee with no sugar and no cream and its awesome! Also love the twister cup 😊
Thanks for watching! I've not tried CBD with coffee... Maybe that's my next adventure. Cheers!
Have you try Tableya , check it out and let me know
Thanks for watching! I'll check it out.
I tried it but no way I’ll stick with my coffee it’s to watery for me I even double the scoops and still not my cup of tea
I totally agree! I doubled and tripled scoops and even did a 15 min steep. No matter how it’s brewed it’s still like unsweetened YooHoo…
Thanks for watching!
Anyone who use this product shouldn’t use the French press .
Thank you for watching and I totally agree!
@camerasandcoffee3466 how is this brewing method different than a French press? It's still steeping and then using a mesh filter. What am I missing?
I'm not a coffee person and I've been trying to use Crio Bru to get off so many energy drinks.
I’m really trying to understand the point of your video. Yes, Crio is not coffee (and they state this clearly on the package). It’s also not cocoa (it’s not fermented). Why do you keep on harping that it’s not Valrona and not Nesquick? They don’t claim that it is. Chocolate is a mixture of cocoa, coco-butter or cream, and sugar. Don’t expect this to taste like chocolate unless you add cream and sugar (Nesquick contains both). Your video doesn’t even show you drinking what you brewed. What’s the point of lengthily describing your brewing method if it doesn’t result in a beverage that you enjoy? 20 minutes of describing how to make a beverage you don’t want to drink? Why? I don’t get it.
