I saw an original Shelby Daytona Coupe in a video. It had Webers on it. The owner said the Webers allowed the engine to run cooler than a 4 barrel also they were able to run a wilder camshaft while still being tractable enough for regular driving

1977 I ran an Edelbrock street tunnel ram,on a 350 Chevy with two 600 CFM Carter carburetors, headers Muncie M21 transmission,3:73 gears in the rear end.
It did well on the street.
Back then I bought two new Carter's for 120.00 dollars.
I had a aluminum velocity stacks on it , sticking out engine compartment,no hood ,of course .
    Looked very cool !

I had a similar set up except it was a 68 Z 28 302 with a four speed crash box trans and it was in a 62 Nova with action traction traction bars and Mickey Thompson and Cragar Spoke mags 333 rear end! I could not drive it on a rainy day!

I've run dual 2 barrel carbs on a vw bug. I've built plenty of engines but nothing wakes up more with so little effort than a classic vw. 1600 pound car and tripling and possibly quadrupling the horsepower without adding any nitrous or boost makes you look pretty impressive. I was putting myself through school in the 70's and used to commute to school in my bug and after getting tired of flat footing that car to get from point A to B I built the engine and didn't realize just how built I had made it till I broke cam in and fine tuned the engine and went for a ride. I also had a firebird ram air Iv but wasn't my daily driver. While at school this kid who's daddy had bought him a 1970 grand prix with a 455 in it was making fun of me in my bug. I told him I had a firebird that would blow his doors off . He said bring it in and I said sure but I wanted to see him beat my bug before I waisted my gas to bring in my bird. I was commuting between school and work over a 100 miles a day and I wasn't even sure my bird could beat my bug since my bug beat everyone I had raced in my bird. I knew those grand prix were beautiful cars but weigh over 4000 pounds. The whole class came to this very remote road that had a 1/4 mile marked off to watch this kid beat me. LOL, I had 10 car lengths on him by the time I hit 2nd gear and realized I didn't need to launch as aggressive as I had done and just rowed the rest of the gears 😅. He said he got a bad start and wanted a do over. So same thing and this was my commuter car so I took it easy the 2nd race. Still beating him but because I took it easy he was catching me but I still had him by 5 car lengths. By now his friends were braking his balls and one of them wanted to ride with me on the 3rd race. Launched like my 1st race and just granny shifted and even threw in neutral well before finish line. His buddy couldn't stop laughing especially when his buddy said he was starting to catch us. His buddy said yeah he was in neutral gliding at the end. You have nothing for that bug ! That kid got teased the rest of the year , that year couldn't end quick enough for him 😆 Yeah bugs don't do well with single carbs, I suspect runners are so long I believe fuel which gets atomized at ventures, turns back into liquid by the time it gets to heads . My bird was a low 13 second car all day long and my bug which I drove approximately 700 miles a week was just about as quick. I tried a single carb but had no idle, was ok above idle but had zero drivability.

I lucked into an unfinished T bucket kit for next to nothing. I couldn't afford Webbers so I put 3 - 40mm Harley CV carbs on a Ford 300-6 I had on homemade manifolds and stuck it in the bucket. The variable venturi side draft carbs looked awesome, were dirt cheap and it ran fantastic.

I have 3 cars and 6 carbs. 79 Camaro with a 427 SBC Tunnel Ram, 65 Beaumont with a 406 Tunnel Ram and a 83 Pontiac Parisienne (B body) with a 355 and Dual Quad. All work great and thats all I will run. Single carb set ups just don't cut it anymore

i have run Dual Quad Tunnel ram on Both. A 302 and a 351` Cleveland, they are a little tricky to make run! The difference in what happens above 6000 rpm makes it worth all the trouble. i used Dual 650 Dubble pumpers on the 302 and two 750 on the Cleveland! Both pulled hard to 7500.

1980's ran a built 460 Ford in a jet boat. Tunnel ram with two 660cfm Holley center squirters, (no chokes, of course). Holley electric fuel pump. Accel BEI ignition with Supercoil. Ran it in temps of 50 to 90 degrees weather. Turn the pump on, build fuel pressure, pump the pedal twice. Started first time, every time. never stumbled, never backfired. Great carbs, great ignition system.

Andy at Unity Motor Sports. is running a 600 horsepower 393 Ford stroker getting 16 mpg. He has proven if you know how to tune carburetors on a tunnel ram, a dual plane AND single planes are; well there's nothing wrong with 2nd place lol. I do love tunnel rams.

  • @BearFulmer
    @BearFulmer Рік тому +1

I had a friend with a 39 Dodge rat rod truck that let me help him tune his dual four barrels on top of a tunnel ram it was mostly a mild 91 small block with a thumper style cam in it but it was fun learning about the dual quads and then we put nitrous under the dual quads, but what was wild to me was instead of trying to match the signal in the carburetor the angle of the throttle plates was actually more important or helped more and we were running to Holly vacuum secondaries on it that were completely different but I pulled them apart and change the secondary plates so we could match them and then we put in quick change springs so we can get them to open the right way and tune the secondary springs on the chassis Dyno.

An interesting point tonight was the point of limiting advance. With smog era parts it made things like this more prone to happening. 40 all in is a lot of mechanical advance timing, I could see it being done to make the engine easy to crank or if timing was modified elsewhere for some reason. I've heard of people welding the holes up in the plate attached to the shaft as well.
Where I've limited timing is the vac advance subsystem. I made a plate out of sheet metal I could do it with, the vacuum advance was just too much. Supposedly the cans that are out there are in many cases meant for EGR, and add about 10 degrees too much (~20 vs ~10.) It wouldn't matter much at the dyno though, so I doubt you even run vac advance on those engines. If someone has a street car they should absolutely figure out their vac advance, it's an immense piece of engineering that makes the car run well at cruise.
Never run multiple carbs. I would love to have 3X2 on my 258 at some point if I weren't going boosted. Then again if I did that I'd have to get rude with the cam and the converter too and figure out how to make it live at that RPM.

I missed the live, but I do have a pair of holley 750s on a tunnel ram. Switched from a 454r intake/1050 dominator because it was pulling almost 2" vacuum at the shift. The 750s have 3.4" vacuum, but the tunnel ram ran the same et @ 80° that the dominator ran @ 50° air temp. I'm a little baffled why the 750s are showing more wot vacuum than a single 1050.

The closest I ever got was when I considered swapping the head and fuel injection of a Volvo 164 I used to have for a pre FI head with twin carbs. As the time was pre-Internet and I couldn’t find what I was looking for in my local area. I don’t know if it would have been any less trouble that the early electronic injection, but I was willing to try.
