We were able to train our pup in a couple of weeks but it took a team of 4 and when the kids (2) were off school (summer). We did shifts and she was placed in a crate at night with the nocturnal teen checking on her once in a while; carrying her from the crate to outside when she was seating up. She did her business and back in the crate to sleep; no talking no playing. During the day one person was assigned to watch her closely and would take turns so no one would get tired. We placed bells at the front and back doors and trained everyday with treats. I guess it was easier for us because it was a team effort. We also trained her to ring the bell before every meal to help prevent food aggression.

One tip that gets forgotten is even if they are potty trained, a new environment could create potty accidents again. If I bring my dogs to a family members house, lots of outside time and watching for ques that they might be sniffing for a place to potty in their house and redirecting them outside every time those ques are seen. Lots of attention needed.

Yeah we brought my 7 month old puppy over to my dad's and when he tried to make it out in the morning, he doesn't sleep in a crate there so he could have just peed on the floor but he whined to go out and just couldn't make it as the house was bigger than his normal house

The est tip I can give you is bring the puppy out as often as you can. Watch out for circlinh and sniffing. It's unusual to have trouble to train a cavalier king charles but it took me three and a half months to potty train my last dog. Also what helps is the spray with enzymes in it that neutralizes the cent we can't smell. Even after thorough cleaning there's a cent left behind that we can't smell and the puppy will tend to find that spot most times.

I forgot to say that when you bring the puppy out give them lots and lots of praise when they go to the toilet outside.
Don't punish them for going inside either. Always give them about ten minutes in case they want to go poo and pee. When my puppy is after peeing I give her about five minutes more just in case she wants to poo too.
Also don't rush to bring them inside when they're finished. Let them explore and play for a few minutes. If you rush to bring them in when they are done they might think they are being punished.
If you can give the puppy s treat immediately after going to the toilet outside.
If you follow my advise you should hopefully have a trained puppy really fast. It only took two days for me to get my puppy 95% potty trained by doing what I advised to do here.
In the past two and a half weeks she's only had six accidents which were my fault.

Ok im not understanding why my pup is going pee inside the house. He is GREAT in his kennel, he will definetly let me know he has to go. Outside he does GREAT, he even goes #2 in the same general area. He NEVER goes #2 inside. He likes to spend time in a covered patio right outside my back door. Im trying 2 transition him to spend more time inside. Once I put him inside he does good for about 30mins then out of nowhere he just goes #1. Yes I'm watching him m have a leash on him indoors. He literally doesn't give me much of signs like sniffing, going in circles or tail straight up. He just stops what he's doing n goes, hardly even squats down either. Heck he has peed twice on himself while lying belly down n legs spread out playing with a toy. What am I doing wrong or why is he doing that? Many times he pees and within 10 mins he does it again. Plz help!!

I think it’s great that you show us mistakes, from the dog and from you . So many videos show the trainer “training” a dog who already has it down pat. But when you are at your wits end with a puppy this is not helpful. I like that we see Kona doing things wrong at the beginning and then we can see the process you go through. This is actually much more authentic than watching trainers work with trained dogs. THANK YOU.

My dog (9 y/o) has trained us to let her out whenever she stands at the back door, or knocks at the door. She’s also teaching our 14 week puppy to do the same thing haha. We’ve been potty training her by taking her out every time she wakes up from a nap, twenty minutes after eating, after playing, hourly when she’s awake, and before we think she’ll be excited (before a guest comes) and whenever she starts sniffing. Her training has been going amazingly thanks to your videos.

It was the opposite for me. I had to leave my month old puppy alone for four hour periods of time for a few days in October, and he never ever went inside even though I had everything set up for him in case he had to go. I got him a puppy grass patch, he had pads, but refused until I got home to take him out during my lunch and after work. He just stands at the door when he has to go and we go downstairs. ❤️ Moving into my first home on the fourth and will be setting up a doggy door for him as well as his own separate side lawn for when we're at work during the day because the yard is so big. Hopefully, he'll catch on just as easily. 🤞Thank you for the videos!!

It's a relief to see a video where the puppy is not a perfect learner and can be 3 months old and still have to learn! My puppy was super anxious ans scared of the outside when I first got him so all the perfect videos of 8 weeks old puppies confident and loving the outside world, learning in 5 days how to potty outside, were completely useless to me.

  • @michelleheegaard
    @michelleheegaard 3 роки тому +8

My dog caught on surprisingly quick. He's still learning what is the best way of alerting me to the fact that he needs to go potty. But he definitely knows by know that he's not supposed to do it in the house which is so amazing.

I just got my dog dog yesterday! He's a boy and is a 2 month old golden retriever. He is very easy to teach because when we took him to our friend, our friend said that they already trained him a little bit like sitting, by saying quiet and he becomes silent. Golden retrievers are very smart, my dog already knew where to potty.

Thanks 4 this video... By now I have failed more than I've succeeded @ potty training... I'm getting frustrated. I feel like my house isn't clean anymore & smells like 1 big bathroom telling our puppy it's ok to go anywhere. On top of that he's learning more bad behaviors faster than I can learn how to train him cuz it takes time for me to learn these new training techniques too... Dog trainers make it look so simple. Your the 1st to show all the mistakes as well as successes so even tho I like give up & feel I made a huge mistake in thinking we could handle a puppy, I will keep trying. TY for making this video. I appreciate it.

I got a Cavalier King Charles puppy two and a half weeks ago.
Within two days I had her following me outside to go to the toilet. She's had the occasional accident here and there. About five or six accindents but she's started showing me that she wants to go out now.
For the first week I was bringing her out once an hour then for a few days I started bringing her out every two hours. With the past week and a half she only wants to go out every three hours though. But I bring her outside whenever she wants to go out and wait about ten minutes to make sure she's done.
This isn't my first puppy though. I had a cavalier king charles for ten and a half years up to June 2020. So the experience of having her has helped me train the puppy.

Our breeder did a great job getting our puppy started. We've run into two unique issues and one normal one:
    1. We live in the north, it's freezing cold here and the puppy doesn't like being outside. That led her to refusing to go and having accidents moments after you took her back inside. She figured out that going potty means she gets to go back inside and now she's pretty prompt about it.
    2. We live in an apartment complex and the sight of people or other dogs sets her off and then she refuses to go. We're working on socializing her to people and getting her into obedience classes will hopefully turn this around.
    3. The normal issue is that although she can usually go 1-2 hours without going out (and completely overnight), in the late afternoon/evening she processes most of her urine and can need to go out every 30 minutes. If she's interacting or playing then just like a human child, she doesn't notice she needs to go until it's too late and gives you NO sign that she needs to go.
To her credit, it's pretty clear that, like all dogs, she PREFERS not to go to the bathroom in her living space. So we'll get there.
I've used the bells with my dogs in the past and am working on training her to use them so she can give us better signals. I will warn viewers that dogs will straight up use them to go outside if that's what they want, even if they don't have to go. So they're best for people who have their dog on a consistent exercise regimen or they'll be ringing them all day to get you to take them outside.

I wish I can loan out my mini aussie pup to Zak for a few weeks to train. It would help me and give him content for his channel :-) a win win 😁😁

Does someone know where he has got the treat bag? Looks super nice to use in training! I have a lot of problem with the one I'm currently using.
I'm also so thankful to have access to these videos for free. It is a blessing to have this free education, thanks Zak!

Thanks for posting this. We have been struggling with our 16 week old puppy with potty only in the evenings. I’m not sure what is off but we’re continuing to trying to figure it out. She’s super smart but something seems to be off in the evenings. She will go out every 15-30 minutes and come right in and pee on the floor.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum and my wits end with two of my dogs marking. They go in and out all day and they'll mark no matter how many times I thwart them. The last two days they did it twice. I've tried everything (their sister is a graduate of your training series) to no avail. I'm chasing my tail and I'm exhausted. I would love it if you could touch on this in a future episode.

Thank you so much zac!!! I didn’t know kona was going through these issues!! I thought my dog doesn’t poop in the house anymore but she does pee. I thought she was doing well cause she went a week accident free but then it went downhill. (Btw we r pee pad training her bc we live on an apartment)

My dog was really interesting with potty training. He got that he had to pee outside really fast and didn't need to go at night after about a week (he didn't cry or anything at night). But it took him MONTHS (like half a year) to grow out of his baby bladder and hold it longer than 1-2 hours. So I still needed to go out all the time.

I'm dealing with this now. My puppy is 97% good with poop, but that bladder. We live in a town house and he's confined to the basement as we train. I was taking him out every hour, however, we are in winter now. I switched to 2 hrs and he was doing well. Then I'll take him out and he'll pee 10 minutes later, or twice in the next 30!! It gets frustrating at times. He only holds it longer when he's sleeping. I need help!

It took about 12 mos to potty train my female doodle. She had a uti so we got off to a rough start. Pooping was no problem. But peeing, I have to say it was 12 mos before I was completely comfortable with her potty training. So don't give up people. Keep at it!

My Border Collie was doing so well.... then took a step back. My mistake was taking it for granted she would progress like the many other collies I've trained. They are individuals and it has been a few years since I've trained a new pup. It's all on me, not her. This video reminded me I need to train and be patient.

Hi Zak I am getting a border collie puppy soon and I was watching some of your old videos with inertia, and I saw that you would not let here go any where near any parks because she could have gotten a disease, I have another do at home and was wandering if my new dog and the dog I already have could they play together. Even know my new puppy does not have all of his vaccinations yet.
