How to rotate a compass bezel

- The most common question I’m asked on novice and intermediate courses is "how to hold a compass whilst it's being rotated. Your compasses bezel needs to be rotated to take a bearing from a map. But how do you do that, how do you hold the compass so it stays still on the map.
This video shows how I do it. But, as we’re all different it may not work for you. Give it a try and see.
Thanks for giving the location. I suppose the Romans had guards and maybe a town to staff the gate. An interesting place.
there would have probably been high wood fences on top (like a castles battlements) and garrisons every few miles with constant patrols between the watch towers built into the fences/defensive walls. the gates would have probably been highly secured too 😊 (not fact, just an idea)
I’ve been following you for some time!! I must say, you’re an awesome instructor!! I’ve learned so much, and applied your teaching and techniques it has made my navigation abilities improved so much!!! Your awesome!! Thank you!!! ❤❤❤❤ from Washington state USA!!!
What Hector said! except from Illinois.
I agree with Hector! ❤ Are you visiting America yet? We need to plan something together so we can get Wayne over - 😮🎉 Help fund his stay 😊😊😊😊😊
You Rock my friend. I do suppose there are some folks who require this level of training. Search and Rescue teams live for them. However, on another note. A bit more waffling please. Your side trips are fascinating. 😁
You are at a gorgeous point 🫶❤️🐾
cool and useful chanel. cheers from France.
De rien 😊

Thank you for all you do 🙏🏼
Thnaks for learn me .
Greetings from Madrid

Can you do a series on navigation skills for mountain leader qualification please it would be super helpful to have all the relevant bits in one series. Loved the navigation skill level vids
I’m an ML but I don’t teach other trainee ML’s other than when they book land nav courses.
There is a major difference between the nav which I teach and that required by ML’s. My courses are aimed at developing personal nav skills. An ML is responsible for the safety of others up in the hills - as am I when I take groups and private lessons.
I would guess that my advanced course (NNAS Gold) would be about the starting point for nav ability if you want to start thinking of doing the ML training, then you’ll need to up your game before the assessment.
To quote from the Mountain Training handbook, which I think tells you the level their looking for on the assessment, “Mountain Leaders have a mastery of navigation”.
The full ML speck is in the link below and the nav section starts on page 25. As you see there is nothing complicated there. The complications start with the level you need to be at - see the guidance on page 26 then you’ll realise why so many folk fail the ML due to not good enough nav skills in all weather and visibilities.

Another video so full of information you need to watch it at least twice!
Have to dispute the gap part though Hadrians Wall had a gap every mile, Sycamore gap is just one of them.
Awesome
I get it, turn the thingmybob that's on top of the watchamcallit. Simple. Never seen it done like that though. 😂👍
Your not wrong. 👍
👍
I place the map on the ground, then use 2 hands to rotate the compass and the bezel
love your videos i’m a new channel i do wild camping on dartmoor so i need map reading skills and advice
Good luck with your new channel - I started last year. I watched your "BATS and WILD CAMP on DARTMOOR" and I thought it was really interesting
@@TheMapReadingCompany thanks glad you did👍👍
So that wall was it always that high would not keep much out or is it just a boundary marker
It was MUCH taller. There are many, many websites giving details of The Wall.
I hold the bezel still and allow the earths rotation to move the rest 😛
I use a hammer and nail.
What no waffle
I think I managed to sneak a little Archimedes in there - hopefully no one noticed 😊
@@TheMapReadingCompanywasn’t it Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics? Great book that.
