    31 years old, 189 cm and 95 kg. January 1st 2024 I achieved 20 wide pullups in a row. I've only managed 15 before and tried after a full weekend of rest. I thought 20 would take me the whole year as 20 for my weight is HARD. I FELT SO HAPPY. You've been a major inspiration over the past year in my calisthenics journey. I've trained for 4.5 years now but honestly, on and off with intensity. But I ALWAYS train something 5 days a week. Even when I don't really feel like it. Thank you for everything :)

    @redbot1233 Рік тому +323

    Summary:
    Very short: train with intensity, not volume for calisthenics strength.
    Longer:
    1. He himself had a lower back injury, which prevented him from progressing in weighted pull-ups.
    He kept training though so he kinda trained like a bodybuilder (building muscle mass) with no progressive overload but with volume.
    For calisthenics you don’t want this, you want intensity, which means doing about 2 sets with progressive overload (important for strength progress) not like a bodybuilder (he uses the term bodybuilder for someone on steroids and in bodybuilding competitions) with a lot of volume going to failure (=different kind of training)
    2. Don’t do lat pull-downs after pull-ups bruh. Rest 5-10 min after failure for good recovery and do as many reps you can get.
    (3?). Just start as soon as you can since it becomes routine and after years of good training it will definitely add up
    Conclusion for us:
    Keep adding weight as you get stronger and progress the overload for 2 sets (3 WITH progressive overload is very difficult/impossible)
    Going to failure with volume is for bodybuilders, NOT calisthenics. For that you need to use intensity to go to failure

    • @MayLegon
      @MayLegon Рік тому +5

      what he means with bodybuilders is not people that workout with gym machines, he means people that use steroids and take part into bodybuilding competitions, all he said has to do with people that go to the gym aswell and is not only restricted to people that do calisthenics, did you not hear how he was talking about lat pulldowns in the video?

      He said 2 excercises not the 2 sets. I believe in his program he offers, he does 2 warm up sets with increasing intensity and then a heavy set , and then a slightly lower in weight set(with more reps then 3 rd set)
      And do the same for 2nd excercise

Is this kind of training going to build mass? I mean I look good already but I'd like to be a lil' bit bigger. This is the way I train for 3 years and i have seen great results in phisycal appereance but not in strenght. What should i do!? Thanks! Big up!

    • @groxin

      I would recomend you to try to rest 4 minutes between sets. So you can recover and perform your best at every set.

      @@waldenschmidt4626well im sure instead of doing that many sets you choose u could do 2-3 sets till failure per exersice and add other exersices like pullups or chin ups,and make sure to train abs too they are so important in strength,on other days you could do running and do squats with the weighted vest,if weighted squats become easy then do them very slow and controlled same with ither exersices like pull ups or push ups

    • @ZlatniPlast
      @ZlatniPlast Рік тому

      You seem like you didn't even listen to the video? Ian explained it all. But here is my knowledge. If you seek strengt, do not do same group for 4-5 days after workout, do 3-6 sets at most and go till failure. @@waldenschmidt4626

    • @zxr250
      @zxr250 Рік тому

      @@waldenschmidt4626 Depends on your proximity to failure. If you only did 10 pushups but could have done another 10+ in that same set, you will build virtually no muscle at all. If you did 10 but could do 11 at maximum, then you will build muscle for a short period of time before you need to progressively overload in some capacity.

    10:22. Close to failure, shouldn't do more than 2/3 sets in an exercise and you shouldn't do more than 2 exercises. Reason: due to fatigue, more sets/exercises don't allow progressive overload. Furthermore, the exercises should be significantly different; he doesn't elaborate beyond the plane of movement but says that a pull workout has a vertical pullup and horizontal row which is great, but doing a pullup followed by a lat pulldown is dumb because it's the same movement 13:00. Ian also re-emphasises that biceps are often the limiting factor in a pull workout and after 2-4 sets total, the biceps are fatigued to a point where progressive overload on subsequent lifts is impossible, regardless of 5-10 minutes rest. 14:26 Rest is important, suggests 5-10 minutes for compounds to not waste the next set. Progressive overload is necesary for muscle growth in Ian's opinion.

As an English teacher I cannot help but give one tip to help you be clearer to your audience...I just think you used the word "impressive" 3 times, slightly incorrectly in this video. By definition that word is correct, but it really only has positive connotation. When describing someone doing something badly or incorrectly, I would use "astonishing" or "shocking", which can be both positive or negative, but usually negative. Or you could even say something like "I am/was dumbfounded", which only has a negative connotation.

    I can tell you already as a physical therapist that if you don't go for reps and instead just add intensity then your muscles will grow fast but most likely outgrow passive tissue like tendons. A lot of bodybuilder have exactly that problem because of massive muscle growth. You are super young. Its like telling you that smoking is bad now even though you don't know how the consequence feels. I wish you good luck but for everyone who wants to listen to this. Beware and realise that this is your only body and your only chance of healthyness when you become older. Try to train with a fitting and healthy dose. Take it slow and steady.

      Don't worry man. Ian has taken a whole measure and seriousness on avoiding injuries while 100% intensity + failure, relating to form of the intended exercise, how many reps planned in each set, warmups, tendon tear from too high weights or intensity for low reps + to failure, etc. He also even spoken about a small injury he had months and months ago in his IG (instagram) story, where something in his arm *snapped when he was side pressured in arm wrestling, In approaching injuries, he has this principle where if he get injured, he knows that he did something wrong. So he tries to learn from the injury, find the best knowledge about it like having a call with someone better than him as how to get tendons stronger (getting these little golden nuggets), strengthens it like doing 'blood flow' in his workout, and maybe even apply those knowledge that is actually very important to his program, to avoid his atheletes or people out there to get injured. Doing all of that instead of just fixing the injury and move on so that he knows what he and also other people are really doing in training. I can tell you that he does these calls almost every week, trying to gain knowledge like how they do that thing, from atheletes particularly better than him, and having calls with the best atheletes he knows, weighted cali dudes, powerlifters, armwrestlers, etc.
      Believe me or not but 4 months ago, I literally have no idea how everything in the fitness industry works, like you know I just do random stuff at training, watching hundreds of fitness videos making bare progress, well I was not so serious cuz of how uncertain they are. I started to gain knowledge from Ian (for free) and thanks to him, I made huge noticable progress and went from knowing nothing to knowing what i'm doing, even tho I was not even as *close* as the progress that Ian's atheletes made 💀. I gained almost all available knowledge from him and I absolutely respect how geniune and honest he is about everything he does and influence.

    I agree!!! The same can be said about the front lever. I never thought the front lever would give me such a strong back soreness in every single part of my back because we are training holds and negatives. But the growth is unmatched 🙌🏻

    over training by definition means carrying on any more exercise than the precise amount required to stimulate muscle growth, most however seem to regard over training as only kinda negative, over training is much worse than that, it exactly what that militates against muscle growth, it's not wasted effort, it's "counter productive" - again it's exactly what that prevents you from growing.

    Resonates cause im living it right now. I started off a year and a half ago going 6x week and although I was overloading I got to a plateau. Now sometimes I skip an entire week of training and when I go back im able to overload at a higher intensity than you'd expect. Being natty means you need lots of rest especially if you're actually dialing up the intensity to like 11. My ego didn't want to accept this in the beginning year and I thought more training = more gains but its nonsense like Ian said. Try it out if you dont. Believe him you'll be shocked. However you will have to adjust your calories or pick up some cardio to offset the reduction in frequency.

    I only focus on getting stronger weighted pull ups and dips and skills training and of course legs even though i hate it.
    My body is perfect shape just doing few exercises. I used to train like a body builder and i had that ugly bodybuilder shape 🤮 calisthenics is the best thing for our body. Thanks champ

    If you want big arms isolate. Alex leonidas (alpha destiny) has a 3 plate weighted pullup and his arms were 15". He also had a 800lb dl and 600 lbs squat. Bench 400lb. He focused on curls, push downs, extensions and got 17" arms and still growing.
    The "spider physique" is caused by doing movements that target the back and chest and do not provide adequate stimulus to your arms. For example 5x5 and starting strength produce bad physiques with no arm isolation.
    People who grow big arms from calisthenics frankly have good genetics where isolation is not necessary. For the average person isolate your arms instead of only relying on compunds only.
    Lastly your biceps and triceps are not reaching failure in compounds as they are a SECONDARY mover not a primary mover. Hes right that reaching failure is important. Do that for your arms in addition to your back/chest.
