I've lived here in Avon Park for 6 yrs now and I really like it here,I find it to be the easiest place to live in my retirement yrs,am originally from Maine, very easy and laid back here
I moved from Ohio to Maine in 2006 and stayed 10 years too long. Too cold. Mainers HATE "out-a-staters" with a purple passion. I moved back to Ohio in 2016. In 2018, I made up my mind I'd move out of the cold for good and moved to warmer climes. True Mainers move to Florida then drive back a year later. I've seen it many times. Moving to Florida has a very steep learning curve, no matter how rich or poor. Whether sleeping next to gators or cashing out your savings, the ropes are hard knocks. I'm a 66-year old retired federal aerospace engineer, and got put in jail for 26 days, because I pleaded not guilty to a charge of vagrancy by a rather rotund police officer in Pinellas Park FL. The other jailies told me I would have been out in 15 minutes if I had plead guilty to something I didn't do. The court monitor screen showing a taped video of the judge finding me guilty after 26 days in jail and fined me $600, which was exactly the amount of my income tax refund that month. No coincidence. Steep learning curve.
I was wondering how long it was going to take you to say that it's a high crime area but it didn't take long at all I've never been there but I've had family who lived there and couldn't wait to get out of there because of all the crimes and they got afraid to leave the house because it got broken in to a couple of times and your right some parts are beautiful but you just really did a great job on the video i got to see finally what avon park looks like thank you for your video 👍
We live out west of Avon park. We bought a house here 4 years ago from this posting, and our house value has doubled. (Very small house.) And for the crime, the sheriff's office does a great job. Keep your doors locked, and keep good company, and your good.
I have lived here all of my life (i’m 17 so not a long time) and personally speaking it’s very tiring. Nothing new and always the same old stuff. There’s good and bad in the city just like everywhere else. It’s also tiring if you’re interested in different things and have to travel 2hr+ just to go somewhere fun. Same thing with doctors appointments. If you want a reputable doctor you need to travel to orlando. My mother & father grew up here and they like it. My mom said when she was a kid (she’s almost 60) the town was way better than it was now and it was a nicer and more safe area. I can say the same, I remember when I was a kid it seemed better here. But all of the upscale people have moved out of the area, so it has went down hill. I remember watching your video last year. You should go down Avon Pines and ride around. I live out here and enjoy it, it’s very quite and I like the fresh air. check out Arbuckle creek, It’s a good spot to fish at or just sit and enjoy the area, but be careful for the gators haha. As for the real estate prices, they have increased very quickly throughout the past year or two. Where I live on 5 acres my parents purchased it for 80 or 90 thousand and now it’s worth 215k. Edit because I forgot; just wanted to say I love watching your videos and hearing your commentary on our little town! thanks for uploading this kind of stuff ! keep it up
I live there in the 70s as a kid. Crime was very apparent in the 70s too. Among other things. But I did enjoy the lakes and going to Bradenton with family on the weekends. Good family memories.
And I like how he was being honest and letting you know the truth cuz I always wanted to move to Florida and never will cuz im retired now and handicapped but I think I'll stay where I am its paid for and I'm 20 minutes from St Louis so we have our share of the crime rate also but not as bad as down there i hear anyway but thanks again for the video 👍
Aw u guys made another video! Tbh it's boring to live in AP but people play basketball, they do sports to have something to do, you go to Walmart (the shopping mall) and u hang out with people. Good video
Was Stationed there when I was in the Air Force at the Bombing Range (I believe it's closed now); I loved my time there!!! Going to the Beachfront Club - lol!
As with any area; you need to check it out in the daylight and at night. Some parts of Avon Park are sketchy. Yes, compared to other parts of Florida, AP is inexpensive. Just do your homework. Small town. If your retired then Highlands county is for you. As for jobs. Most employers hire bilingual and under 50 yrs old if you are in a professional field.
@@quanathanit's a small town so everyone knows each other, I like the layout of the city but tbh I just be walking around high all the time seeing what to do and finding people to mess with
So why didn't you mention the Jacaranda Hotel right downtown? It is run by the community college to train people in the hotel industry. Food is good there as well.
Just bought a house there. I’m looking forward to retiring there soon. You could do the same video but point out the positives. It’s your perspective that’s off.
@kcampbell4096 Well Said!! It’s the perspective that’s off, not to mention he missed quite a bit of wonderful details about the town. Enjoy your retirement, my mom retired in Avon Park as well🤗
Yes this is Highlands County and Avon Park is north of the county seat (Sebring). It's a nice town but it has nothing to offer. Close to everything thou. Just a few minutes away.
Bro I grew up in that town stop tellin people what u hear an read on internet it’s a awesome little town my family still lives there I moved to Sebastian love it here but would go back there most def
It's a good conservative area for the most part. 90% Christian blue collar folks.Sure their's cretins but they mostly reside in the hood on the badside of main street. Home values are going up. Hopefully rent hikes will push the less desirable out.
@@johnholbrook6042 why would/do they stick around? Theirs not alot of work around here. Why wouldn't/don't people just migrate to where jobs/cheaper houses are?
I lived in Avon park a good long while. From 1980 to 1994.. The town was segregated. Meaning color and $ status. The west side of us 27 was wealthy like doctors Asians peep from other countries Business owners. On the east side of us 27 was blues collar peep. Whites. A few people of color. South side was the quarters aka beach front. American blacks. Jamaicans. A few Haitian. Lots of poverty. Drug sales. Robbery . Gambling. Illegal shit. Sad place Avon park. Even a preacher killed old couple for thier $. Terrible. I left went west.
BTW the kkk would meet every now n then on the main street. Just standing around with their sheets over their heads. Old men they were lol no one was scared of them.
Hasn't changed much but to me the racial issues belong to the minorities here because of the past. I'm a 46 yr old white dude from the Cleveland ghetto. Collinwood Mainly. I don't care about ethnicity. I'll give respect till I don't get it. It's just that simple. I'd rather be in my Cleveland hood!
Avon park is full of crime im from there you must not be from there or you must be sleeping under a rock I lost some many child hood friends there I can’t even count them on both hands
I’m not sure where your research of this town comes from but the picture you are painting is inaccurate. Listening to an unknown rapper is definitely not credible, please do your research, this town is not crime ridden, people can still walk through neighborhoods without fear of harm and it is still surrounded by lakes, by the way. Take the time to speak with the residents and truly research this area. My grandparents raised their family here and each of their children are successful and happy, some who also raised their children and remain. Also, Avon Park does not give an “Orlando” vibe. I agree with @carlgomm9699, it is very laid back.
