💯% on the retorquing the axle shaft bolts. I swapped out the clutch on my Mk1 Jetta last year, and torqued the axles bolts to factory specs. 4 of them loosened to the point of almost falling out only after a few hundred kilometres of weekend drives. RECHECK THE BOLTS, FOLKS! I took no further chances; pulled all of them and applied blue Locktite. I knew it would be a bear to loosen them in the future, but since this is a weekend car, I figured the clutch should last another 40 years no problem (bearing any unforeseen complications...which, sadly, is discussed below). BTW - speaking of axle shafts; my driver side axle flange seal has since started to leak. Sigh...now the fun starts. Ollie - have you ever replaced axle flange seals with the trans in the car? I am not looking forward to doing that. I built a puller/press tool as per VW forums, but the project still seems daunting. It's a slow leak...maybe I'll do it next year! 😆
@@miketeeveedub5779 comment pinned to top!! I also learned the hard way..haha. Funny you ask. I need to do that in the white car. Honestly it’s not hard. Just takes a little bit of time. Brokevw is a website with a lot of good info that covers that repair
@@OlisGarage - LOL way ahead of you! BrokeVW's website "020 Flange Removal" section was where I got the inspiration to build my flange puller/press. It is indeed a great website for VW knowledge! Looking forward to the seal replacement video! ;)
@@OlisGarage Yeah, I did the drum brakes and bearings, ignition timing, coolant flange, alternator replace, power steering pump, among others all with your help. Doing the timing belt next. Thanks for the videos man!
@@jaweecudal heck yeah, I’m glad they’re helping!! I have a BUNCH of parts that I just need to film installing. Front suspension, bearings, control arms, etc. So more are coming!!
@@Kopfkissen21 I’ll have a video on regreasing the CVs and replacing the boots coming up soon. If they don’t look damaged, I’d just degrease, reboot, and move on. The new drive axles just aren’t the same quality as the original stuff.
I just replaced mine on the driver side and I’m hearing some form of grinding. It’s a low frequency grind I’m wondering if it’s the transmission plate against the housing of the axle I’m not sure.
This video was incredibly helpful, as i got both CV,s done recently. After having them installed (with wheel bearings+hubs) there is a strange popping noise coming from the transfercase area only while turning left at sub 20mph. Now im wondering if it was just because the bolts were not on tight enough/came undone.
For me, the popping/clicking/metallic claning noise was my CV joints failing. The previous owner didn't grease the inner CV joint, so it failed. In my other mk2, my boot was shot and I didn't realize until the joint was already popping.

Dang, i did this job about 7 years ago and it was hot mess without an Oli's Garage vid. Repairs on my 87 Cabriolet have gone much smoother since Oli.
Happy to hear that the repairs are going better with my videos! I have many more repairs that I need to do, and even more that I want to film!

Oh nice. Yeah patiently awaiting the suspension vid. That's on my list!
Just in time. I want to replace my axle next week. Love your Videos 👍🏻

They’re super easy to check, so I would definitely check the bolts
What is the VAG part # for that block of wood?
Haha!!!
That one is NLA (no longer available), so you’re going to have to consult your own scrap wood collection.
Do you mean a drive shaft?
He rear is an axle 😉
@@maverick4177 that would be the more correct term..haha thanks!
