We still use our Calyx device as our primary source and our grandfathered Verizon prepaid hotspot as back up. We're 3 years in and still using those for daily, remote video conferencing work.
We use T-Mobile home internet in our camper. There was only one campground that we didn't have service. It was a state park here in east Tennessee. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
I've currently got Starlink and can confirm the inconsistency issues and slower speeds. Becoming less of a good value with the price increases and slower speeds, especially as other services are becoming faster and cheaper.
We've heard of a lot of people having issues with it unfortunately 😕 we were pretty excited about it but honestly are glad we haven't taken the leap. Thank you for the feedback!
I should add though, since I have to travel to some relatively remote areas in the midwest for my job I stay at a number of campgrounds that have limited to no cell service. There have been a number of times the past 6 months where I had no cell service (T-Mobile) and no one else did either, but I still had internet. So depending on where you want/need to go having that truly anywhere coverage can be very helpful. For folks mainly staying in RV parks or areas with good cell coverage, that wouldn't be something to be concerned about.
Great video guys. Looks like the $2500 is for in motion equipment but $600 for stationary is a deal breaker for me. The monthly rate is going up not down so I’m not interested. I’ll wait until the equipment is free and the monthly rate is less than my current cell provider.
Fellow Hoosier RN here. Hubby retiring this year and I work remotely so we plan to snowbird next winter in TX. This was very helpful as I am trying to decide if I need a back up to my Verizon phone hot spot. I have a grandfathered unlimited data package so keeping that but not sure what I would do if didn't have great cell signal. Our camper does have a booster built in so hoping that will help boost the resort wifi enough to be my backup. Enjoy watching your videos!
Great video, you guys are amazing and so much fun to follow along with! Another option to consider, if it is available, would be T-Mobile Home Internet. It has been an absolute life saver, truly unlimited and if you get a good connection then the speeds are usually pretty great. It wasn't available at my address so I went to the store and asked, and they let me take it home and try it. Thanks for all of the great videos and laughs!
Thank you so much for the kind words!! You're the third person who's suggested T-Mobile Home Internet to us across our platforms tonight, there must be something to that! Thank you!
I have used Calyx for a few years (can't remember when I started) and it has been perfect for me. I had zero issues with it, and like you said I take it everywhere and can connect without issues. I also have AT&T since I was born (I think lol) and have their unlimited hot spot service which no longer exist but I am grandfathered in and so I am not touching that. With AT&T I have their first responders service (I am a Nurse) which reduced my bill in half to $46 or something like that. It all has worked for me just fine thus far.
That's why we love Calyx so much, it really has been great for us! We keep meaning to go get the first responder service set up because we use AT&T as well, we just keep forgetting about it 🤦♀️ Thanks!
I found for us, HomeFi works the best. We pay $80 for 200 GB which is plenty, we never ever come close to using that much per month. This unit is unique because it's not locked into a single carrier, it locks on to the strongest signal whether its Verizon, AT&T, etc. We never stay in campgrounds, we like to boon dock in Arizona, especially in Quartszite, the cell signals are usually fairly weak and crowed in this area, but the HomeFi so far has not let us down. It would seem that the cell companies would invest in more towers in this area, during the winter months there's 3 million people camping in this area, especially in the LTVA's where you pay $187 to camp for 7 months.....
One note for everyone about the Starlink internet price increase. The increase to $150 is for the RV plan. The residential plan used to let you turn on portability so if you lived rural and need internet at home and when you travel that was the way to go. But portability is no longer an option for new residential plans. If you already have residential and portability turned on then you get to keep it (for now) but if you turn it off you can’t turn it back on again. Residential plans either increased in price or decreased in price depending on your home address cell’s capacity. Ours decreased and we fortunately had portability turned on when they all of a sudden changed everything this week. Hope that helps clear up any possible confusion.
Also, as of right now there is no point to have Starlink if you are on the East Coast and spend all your time at campgrounds with tree cover. You won’t get good service. You need open sky and that’s why Starlink began with coverage out West. We stay 100% off grid in the mountains where there is usually zero cell service…so if you want internet it’s either Starlink or a 45 minute drive to the nearest town.
That's great info! It definitely gets confusing with all the changes coming out. It for sure seems to be a great option for those who like to be off grid where there isn't much cell service. Thanks!
Always good to see what everyone is using for mobile internet. Calyx is definitely much cheaper than most. Starlink is a great option for those who want to be in the middle of nowhere and still have some connectivity and hopefully they will keep improving with technology. Thank you for another great video. Stay safe.
There are a lot of options out there! Starlink does seem to be the best option for the really remote locations, hopefully it continues to improve for those who need it. Thank you, you too!
We are a travel nurse couple as well(I'm the tag along), we now have starlink, calyx(with the same hotspot), visible which has unlimited hotspot and a weeboost.
We've had Starlink from the get-go (May 2022) and have had ZERO issues with it. My husband still works fulltime (in banking) while on the road and it is imperative that he's always connected. We have a T-Mobile(?) pepwave router as a backup but have never had to use it so we cut the cord on that expense this month. ~ Susan from Destination Changing (Square Donut friend!)
That's awesome! I'm sure it's super important to have stable internet connection with him still working. I'm glad you found it! Aw hey there fellow Hoosier, glad you put your IG name so I know who you are!!
Great video guys!! We just started full-time and went with a Pepwave mobile router and a Verizon SIM card with 300GB per month. It also has the ability to take the campground WiFi and then use that as its WAN source, which is a good thing right now because we're at a campground that's in a pocket of horrible Verizon coverage. Like you we need decent WiFi to upload videos, not just our YT videos but one we produce for clients as well. That said we'll probably go to a Starlink as a secondary source as well, however we're gonna see how the Pepwave works over the next couple months. We're is a better situation for Starlink tough as we're in Southwest, there's a lot of open sky out here. Thanks again for the video, great information!
We only camp once a month. We use a nighthawk hotspot on ATT with a mimo antenna in the window. It usually provides plenty of browsing/tV streaming bandwidth. I am very curious about how it would support remote work. I have done limited remote work in the 2600, but since we camp to get away from work, I usually don’t even bring a laptop. I am curious how zoom calls would do on my setup. I have tested it, seems to be good with limited trials.
Thanks again for all your tips...you guys rock!! I do have a ton of stuff coming up this summer between work travel and fun stuff...some rendezvous 18th century camping and medieval camping at Pennsic in August (Slippery Rock PA) so yes it's gonna be a great summer!! xoxo Cella & Sugar
I use Travfi for my mobile internet in my camper. I also have a Cricket wifi. Both are awesome. Travfi goes up to 800 gigs a month for about $150. Cricket is about $50 a month for 100 gigs. 😊
Since we aren't working when traveling, we just use our phone's hotspot. *Visible wireless* (Verizon) is very affordable. $25/month plan with a free hotspot included. I've always wondered if Starlink owners were worried about their equipment being stolen?? Sometimes I just see the satellite dish sitting on jeeps, on the ground, etc. Spring is here?? Not where I live! We have 1.5 months of winter left!
T-Mobile’s current plan has served us very well across the south-east and now south Texas. We’ll let you know hope it does as we travel west. $50 per month with no contract is pretty easy!
Always finding the best information on your channel, we love it. We can't wait to be back on the road as well. We stopped in Vancouver on Jan 28th and are planning to go back to sweet home Alabama at end of March; this time rather than going through Idaho and Utah, we'll go through Oregon, California and Arizona. We definitely need some dryness 😉 Any boondocking location suggestions are welcome👍 Happy camping to you all 🇺🇲🇫🇷🇨🇦
Aw thank you so much!! Oh that sounds like it will be a great roadtrip! No boondocking locations are coming immediately to mind but you should have plenty of options, especially in Arizona!
Calyx honestly works for that too! Steph's brother actually uses it as his main home internet - at only $42/month it's a lot cheaper than the other options available at his house!
We use the T-mobile high speed internet gateway for $50/month. It’s unlimited and supposed to be used at your home but works when we travel too. Hey we are headed to Elkhart for some repairs in late March. Do you know any campgrounds to stay at between Indianapolis and Elkhart?
How do you handle wi-fi security in public places? From time immemorial ( the beginning of the internet), warnings about internet security, scams, don't click on unknown links, eavesdropping, identity fraud etc, have been preached at such a high volume that I absolutely do not trust nor will I ever use public wi-fi. It does not help either that about ten years ago while I was on a two week vacation my home was burglarized and the thieves got all my personal information. It was in a big safe but they took the safe too. It took about one year to finally get my name clear and my credit back on track. Hence, I am hyper vigilant about personal security. So, back to my question: How do you know you're on a secure wi-fi?
The plan through Calyx IS absolutely throttled and I'm highly disappointed!! Signed up, got the hotspot box, and now after 50gb of usage got a message on the screen that says Sprint/T-Mobile have now reduced our speed. Contacted tech support and Calyx, got the run around and told they called it, "Network Management". Doesn't matter what they want to call it that's throttling! We could've gone with any number of providers but they all had throttling and this one does too! People need to know what they're getting. Lot of money wasted and too good to be true!!

@@lifererouted Will do, we just have to get to a place where we have decent Verizon coverage first. We move out of the current campground on the 28th.
Thank you for sharing the information! As I consider living on the road this type of info is priceless.

We have a Hotspot from AT&T and it works very well, however I just upgraded to a MOFI router. Still AT&T but much faster. We will see how it works.

@@lifererouted yes! My persona is 14th century Florentine Italian but in the summer it’s too hot for that garb so I do Viking all linen 🤓
Love the tip of going to a brewery and sampling a few beverages while working of course. Safe travels

Does calyx work in Baja? Thanks for the vid. Sub’d.

I just signed up and am glad y’all made this video. ALSO I love the crypto option to pay🤑. Have a great day
Awesome! Thank you!
I’m going to try it out. I just joined. Maybe I can get rid of my home internet and just use this.
Steph's brother did that this year! Way cheaper than what he was using and works better.
Only way to go is a "Hot Spot" I'm skeptical when it comes to public WI Fi. That's a good way too get hacked.
Hot Spots are definitely handy!!
